Places to see in ( Wurzburg - Germany ) St Kilian Cathedral
Würzburg Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Würzburg in Bavaria, Germany, dedicated to Saint Kilian. It is the seat of the Bishop of Würzburg and has served as the burial place for the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg for hundreds of years. With an overall length of 103 metres, it is reckoned to be the fourth largest Romanesque church building in Germany, and a masterpiece of German architecture from the Salian period. Notable later additions include work by Tilman Riemenschneider and Balthasar Neumann. The cathedral was heavily damaged by British bombs in March 1945 but rebuilt post-World War II.
The present cathedral was built from 1040 onwards by Bishop Bruno of Würzburgis. It likely was the third church on the site: the previous two, built in about 787 and 855, were respectively destroyed and severely damaged by fire. After Bruno's accidental death in 1045, his successor Adalbero completed the building in 1075. Due to several rebuildings, notably after 1133, the cathedral was only consecrated in 1187. This church already had the strong cross lay-out still present today: a long nave with a high choir, the broad transept and the two narrow western towers.
The greater part of the building collapsed in the winter of 1946 in consequence of the fire bombing of Würzburg on 16 March 1945. Reconstruction was completed in 1967, in the course of which the Baroque components were removed in favour of a re-Romanisation. The new interpretation emphasizes the contrast between the surviving historical parts of the structure, resulting in a sometimes controversial combination of predominantly Romanesque with modern and Baroque elements. The Romanesque Revival west front with a rose window, the tripartite gallery and the opening for the clock were combined during the reconstruction with a plain pumice stone wall, and revealed again during renovation work up to November 2006. In 1988 the choir was redesigned by Hubert Elsässer.

Places to see in ( Wurzburg - Germany ) Hofkirche
The Court Church of Wurzburg Residence was Prince-Bishop Friedrich Carl von Schönborn (reigned from 1729-1746) in the years 1732 bis 1733 built in the shell. After extensive completion of the extremely rich interior decoration, the church was consecrated on September 15, 1743 .
The founding date of the court parish is unknown, the first mention of a court pastor dates from 1761 . Since 1840 , the parish is organisationally cared for by the parish of St. Peter and Paul , the pastoral care was the Franciscan monastery . With the reopening of the Hofkirche in September 2012 , the Franciscan Minorites have made the commitment to take over church services to the Dompfarrei .
The Hofkirche is dedicated to the Holy Trinity . Remembrance Day is the Sunday after Pentecost. The festival celebrates the mystery of the divine Trinity - known in Catholic parlance as the Trinity: God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
After Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp Franz von Schönborn had himself convinced by Balthasar Neumann to set up the Hofkirche in the south-western corner of the residence , the plans entered a decisive phase. Neumann, to whom the project was transferred, had the problem of preserving the uniform external appearance of the residence and of considering the layout of the façade with its windows and storeys. The left windowless side of the church space was provided with mirrors, which act as windows by reflection of the light.
Neumann tried to help himself by dividing the room into columns that took into account both the lengths and the heights of the windowed outer wall. In the entrance area and in the choir, these pillars carry galleries and form colonnades, which decisively loosens the narrow length of the room. Although the floor plan with its three consecutive oval rotundas can be seen on the space domes, it is barely noticeable in the design of the room. The color scheme of the room is in dark pink and gold, with walls decorated with stucco marble columns.

Religious Imagery in Bavaria, Germany & various historic churches (part 1 of 2 videos)
Various Catholic churches we filmed during our vacation in Germany and Austria. The ones featured in this video were located in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Oberramergau and Mittenwald - all located in the region of Germany known as Bavaria. The historic church featured in Mittenwald is called The Church of St. Peter and Paul (Pfarrkirche Peter und Paul). In addition to the churches, we saw outdoor shrines as well as beautiful religious murals on many buildings throughout Bavaria. I lived here as a young boy and coming back it was a joy to see the familiar onion dome spires of many of the churches.

Central in the square is the Market Cross, a replica of the oldest cross in Europe.
Along the edge of the square are the historic 16th century buildings of Trier.
St. Peter's fountain, a richly detailed piece from the 16th century, is another prominent feature.
Like most of Trier's Old Town, the town square is reserved for pedestrians.
Germany: Würzburg - A walk to the Käppele
The Käppele ('Little Chapel') is the commonly used name for the Wallfahrtskirche Mariä Heimsuchung ('Pilgrimage Church of the Visitation of Mary'), located on a hill above Würzburg, in Germany. It was built following plans by Balthasar Neumann in the mid-18th century in Rococo style. Until 2014 it was attended to by members of the Capuchins.
A way of the cross with 14 stations of the cross marked by small chapels leads up to the Käppele. These were based on an idea by Neumann, but completed only in 1799. The live-sized statue groups (77 figures) were created by Simon and Peter Wagner.
The church's double-towered front and the roof with its cupolas and roof lanterns give it an unusual appearance that distinguishes it from the other churches of Würzburg. The interior features ceiling frescos by Matthäus Günther from 1752 and 1781 and stucco work by Johann Michael Feuchtmayer the Elder. The side altars date to 1768. The neoclassical high altar was made in 1799.
Apart from being a tourist attraction, the Käppele remains a popular pilgrimage site.

GERMANY: Churches of Reichenau island [HD]
Reichenau Island is an island in Lake Constance (German: Bodensee) in southern Germany. It is connected to the mainland by a causeway that was completed in 1838.
The island was declared a World Heritage Site in 2000 because of its monastery, the Abbey of Reichenau.
The abbey's Minster is dedicated to the Virgin and Saint Mark. Two further churches were built on the island consecrated to St George, and to Sts Peter and Paul. The famous artworks of Reichenau include the Ottonian murals of miracles of Christ in St George, unique survivals from the 10th century.
Today the island is also famous for its vegetable farms.
Large parts of the island are listed as nature reserves.

Germany: The City of Würzburg
Würzburg is a city in the region of Franconia, northern Bavaria, Germany. Located on the Main River, it is the capital of the Regierungsbezirk of Lower Franconia.
Interesting sights are:
The Würzburger Residenz
Marienberg Fortress
Käppele
Juliusspital
Falkenhaus
Some of them were the subject of earlier videos
- The Würzburger Residenz is a A UNESCO World Heritage Site. The vast compound near the center of the town was commissioned by two prince-bishops, the brothers Johann Philipp Franz and Friedrich Karl von Schönborn. Several architects, including Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt and Maximilian von Welsch, supervised the construction between 1720 and 1744, but it is mainly associated with the name of Balthasar Neumann, the creator of its famous Baroque staircase. The palace suffered severe damage in the British bombing of March 1945, but has been completely rebuilt. The main attractions are:
* Hofkirche: The church interior is richly decorated with paintings, sculptures and stucco ornaments. The altars were painted by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo.
* Treppenhaus: Here Giovanni Battista Tiepolo created the largest fresco in the world, which adorns the vault over the staircase designed by Balthasar Neumann.
* Kaisersaal: The Imperial Hall, the centerpiece of the palace, testifies to the close relationship between Würzburg and the Holy Roman Empire.
Alas it was not allowed to take pictures from the interior.
- The Alte Mainbrücke (Old Main Bridge) was built 1473–1543 to replace the destroyed Romanesque bridge dated from 1133. In two phases, beginning in 1730, the bridge was adorned with twelve 4.5 meter statues of saints and historically important figures like John of Nepomuk, Mary and Saint Joseph, Charlemagne and Pepin the Short. The bridge was damaged by explosives in the final days of World War II.
- The Rathaus or City Hall of Würzburg differs from those of most Imperial Cities in that it was not a sumptuous edifice purpose-built in Renaissance style. Rather, the motley collection of buildings and wings reflects the fact that after 1400 the city was permanently under the control of the bishop who did not allow a representative new building. The Rathaus consists of parts dating from 1339 (chapel), 1453 (tower with the town's first public clock), 1544 (southwest oriel), 1659/60 (Roter Bau). In 1822 the three-winged structure of the neighbouring Karmeliterkloster (monastery of the Carmelites) was added to the city hall. The Renaissance row on Karmeliterstrasse was built only in 1898.
- The Haus zum Falken on the Marktplatz, next to the Marienkapelle, with its ornate stucco façade, is an achievement of the Würzburg Rococo period. In the past it served as an inn and a public library. Today, it houses the tourist information office.
Würzburg Residence - Court Gardens - Walking Tour, Bavaria, Germany
Würzburg Residence - Court Gardens - Walking Tour, Bavaria, Germany
The Würzburg Residence (German: Würzburger Residenz) is a palace in Würzburg, Germany. Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt and Maximilian von Welsch, representatives of the Austrian/South German Baroque style, were involved in the construction, as well as Robert de Cotte and Germain Boffrand, who were followers of the French Style. Balthasar Neumann, court architect of the Bishop of Würzburg, was the principal architect of the Residence, which was commissioned by the Prince-Bishop of Würzburg Johann Philipp Franz von Schönborn and his brother Friedrich Carl von Schönborn in 1720, and completed in 1744. The Venetian painter Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, assisted by his son, Domenico, painted frescoes in the building.
The Residence was built when Würzburg was still a fortified town. Therefore, the garden too had to be planned within the fortifications. The solution included two bastions of the fortified town wall, using its differences in height to create a very special landscape. From west to east there is a rise in ground, until the level of the wall is reached. Near the residence itself, the Hofgarten (or Court Gardens) is designed in a very formal, Baroque style. Farther away, the style changes to an English garden with small forests and meadows. Designs for the former part were made by Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt, Neumann and François de Cuvilliés. It was mainly created in 1759-70. Johann Peter Alexander Wagner added putti, vases, urns and two monumental sculpture groups, the Rape of Europa and the abduction of Proserpina, sited in the central axis between the Orangery and the southern pavilion of the Residence. The figures were added to the park under Prince-Bishop Adam Friedrich von Seinsheim, who had the park at Veitshöchheim similarly decorated. Three monumental gates lead to the Court Gardens, commissioned by Friedrich Karl von Schönborn from Joh. Georg Oegg.
The gardens and representative rooms described above are open to the public. A memorial room is dedicated to the Residence's destruction in March 1945. It also honours Lieutenant John Davis Skilton, a Monuments man of the U.S. Army who was instrumental in preserving many of the art treasures after his arrival at Würzburg in June 1945.
Most of the rest of the residence is occupied by a the Martin von Wagner Museum (moved here in 1963) and organizations of the University of Würzburg.
