Mitch Lyons Workshop
PARC had the honor of having a hosted workshop last Friday at Clay Center of St. Petersburg by Mitch Lyons Studio, potter, painter and printmaker. Mitch Lyons earned his Masters of Fine Arts in Ceramics from Tyler School of Art, and his Bachelors of Fine Arts in Graphics from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. His clay monoprints can be found in numerous private and public collections throughout the United States, including the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Delaware Art Museum, Woodmere Museum, American University and the University of Delaware.
With the provided space of the Clay Center Studios from one of our gracious Board Members, Lyn Van Voorst, some of the artists from the Inspired Artist Studios at PARC were able to learn first hand how a clay monoprint is made. The experience was amazing and inspiring, and each artist was able to take home their own print. We thank Mitch Lyons for his amazing teachings and work in the community!

Calusa Indian Mound St Petersburg FL
The Calusa lived on the sandy shores of the southwest coast of Florida. These Indians controlled most of south Florida. The population of this tribe may have reached as many as 50,000 people. The Calusa men were tall and well built with long hair. Calusa means fierce people, and they were described as a fierce, war-like people. Many smaller tribes were constantly watching for these marauding warriors. The first Spanish explorers found that these Indians were not very friendly. The explorers soon became the targets of the Calusa attacks. This tribe was the first one that the Spanish explorers wrote home about in 1513.
The Calusa lived on the coast and along the inner waterways. They built their homes on stilts and wove Palmetto leaves to fashion roofs, but they didn't construct any walls.
The Calusa Indians did not farm like the other Indian tribes in Florida. Instead, they fished for food on the coast, bays, rivers, and waterways. The men and boys of the tribe made nets from palm tree webbing to catch mullet, pinfish, pigfish, and catfish. They used spears to catch eels and turtles. They made fish bone arrowheads to hunt for animals such as deer. The women and children learned to catch shellfish like conchs, crabs, clams, lobsters, and oysters.
The Calusa are considered to be the first shell collectors. Shells were discarded into huge heaps. Unlike other Indian tribes, the Calusa did not make many pottery items. They used the shells for tools, utensils, jewelry, and ornaments for their shrines. Shell spears were made for fishing and hunting.
Shell mounds can still be found today in many parts of southern Florida. Environmentalists and conservation groups protect many of these remaining shell mounds. One shell mound site is Mound Key at Estero Bay in Lee County. Its construction is made entirely of shells and clay. This site is believed to be the chief town of the Calusa, where the leader of the tribe, Chief Carlos lived.
Archaeologists have excavated many of these mounds to learn more about these extinct people. Artifacts such as shell tools, weapons, and ornaments are on display in many Florida history museums.
Living and surviving on the coast caused the tribesmen to become great sailors. They defended their land against other smaller tribes and European explorers that were traveling by water. The Calooshahatchee River, which means River of the Calusa, was their main waterway.
They traveled by dugout canoes, which were made from hollowed-out cypress logs approximately 15 feet long. They used these canoes to travel as far as Cuba. Explorers reported that the Calusa attacked their ships that were anchored close to shore. The Calusa were also known to sail up and down the west coast salvaging the wealth from shipwrecks.
What happened to these fierce sailing Indians? The Calusa tribe died out in the late 1700s. Enemy Indian tribes from Georgia and South Carolina began raiding the Calusa territory. Many Calusa were captured and sold as slaves.
In addition, diseases such as smallpox and measles were brought into the area from the Spanish and French explorers and these diseases wiped out entire villages. It is believed that the few remaining Calusa Indians left for Cuba when the Spanish turned Florida over to the British in 1763.

Florida's Newest (and only) Ecovillage: St Pete Ecovillage
This is a tour of the newly formed St Pete Ecovillage. The people here have been putting a lot of sweat into fixing up the space they are turning into an ecovillage. This is a little walking tour around the property to see what they've got going on and what improvements they've already made. It's a work in progress and expect more sustainable systems to be implemented as they get their houses livable and have time and resources to devote to other projects.

SOME OF OUR FAMOUS QUOTES:
“Give More Love-Get More Love-ColinsClub” We made that up.
“Jack of All Trades, Master of None” (it’s when your good at a lot of things, but not the best at one) It’s what my Grandfather used to tell my dad when he was young. My dad (Craig) was good at a lot of things, but not a master of one thing. Well I kind of take that back. My dad was a Champion BMX racer. He was ranked #1 in New York State and #16 nationally. He was even on ESPN 2.
“Hola meine YouTube amici” That’s my dad saying hello in Spanish, my in German, YouTube in YouTube and friends in Italian. Here’s why. We’re part Spanish, my dad lived in Germany for two years in the ARMY, we have 3 YouTube channels and we are mostly Italian. I know I know my dad’s nuts.
“Yuze All” My dad totally made this one up. He says when he lived in New York as a kid they said “yuze guys” and now that we live in Georgia people here say “y’all”. So what does he do? He combined the two and came up with “Yuze All”. I told yuze all he’s nutz. Hahaha!
“Shut Up Dad” – While I open Pokemon packs on my YouTube channel. My dad would be in the background talking a lot. Subscribers and Viewers would leave comments saying, “Tell your dad to shut up”! Soon after it became a popular phrase.
“PoKeDaD DaYz” – My dad made this one up too. He says it’s because he’s the father of a kid (me) with a Pokemon channel. He uses this when he vlogs himself and what he does during a normal day. He is truly the real Mr. Mom!
“Monday Mix” – Monday we open 12 different packs of Pokemon from 12 different booster boxes.
“FLEX on the HATERS” – Something my dad says him and his friends used to say in the gym when they were all pumped up working out? Back in the 1980’s and 1990’s. Hahahaha

ABOUT US
Philanthropists Laura and Richard Sean Manning work tirelessly to plant seeds of a global consciousness towards charitable giving, and to promote unity through art.
Richard Sean Manning is a prolific artist who works in a number of mediums, including ink/acrylic on Arches paper and oil on canvas, metal, blown glass, and even creates his own frames using exotic and rare wood.
He is also an accomplished ceramic artist who works with up to five tons of clay each year to create ceramic art that is sought after by private collectors and museums.
Launches Art Fundraiser
Cognizant of the need to raise funds for worthy causes prompted Sean to paint a series of 'Unity Art'. He has pledged to paint 3000 original works of art as a memorial to all those who perished on 9/11. Even though his art was inspired by this tragic date, his paintings are diverse in color and content, raises social awareness, and is considered 'happy art'.
Launches Art Fundraiser To Raise Over $400 Million
Together they co-founded The Manning Arts online gallery where his 'Unity Art' paintings are featured, and can be purchased to benefit participating charities.
Each original is also available in a numbered series of high quality giclèe prints, in three sizes, representing almost 5 million works of art with a potential of raising over $400 million for worthy causes.
Any 501c3 organization can register at themanningarts.org to participate in this art fundraiser, and are issued with a unique URL that they can share with their supporters.
When a supporter uses that unique link to arrive at The Manning Arts online gallery, they will see the name of the charity prominently listed as the beneficiary of any purchase. The participating charity instantly receives 66% of the proceeds in their secure PayPal account, as a charitable contribution from the purchaser.
The Manning Arts receives the remaining 34% to cover the market value of the art, fulfillment of the order, and ships directly to the supporter. It's as simple as that!
Richard Sean Manning counts his mentors amongst an illustrious group of recognized artists including the late Rudy Autio, Don Reitz, Paul Soldner and Peter Voulkos. He had befriended them when they conducted workshops at the historic Seaboard 'Train Station', a substantial clay facility that he had co-owned in the Warehouse Arts District of St. Petersburg, FL., that became a mecca to ceramic artists.
Donates Ceramic '9/11 Memorial Towers'
Richard Sean Manning was inspired to create a series of ceramic '9/11 Memorial Towers' and to donate them to museums to commemorate 9/11.
His biggest honor to date, is that a nine foot tall pair of his ceramic '9/11 Memorial Towers' have been accepted into the permanent collection at the National September 11 Memorial Museum located at ground zero in New York City.
They will be installed at the museum in early 2015, in a showcase located at the conclusion of the primary historical exhibit of 'Tribute/Response Art'. His art will leave visitors with an uplifting final moment on their discovery of this iconic date forever embedded in the history of The United States of America, and indeed the world.
The mission of this display is to allow visitors, who are probably weary from reading labels and the quantity of walking they must do in the museum galleries at bedrock, to take in the art-responses economically, without needing much context to grasp their emotional genesis. We think that the two looming Tower forms created by Mr. Manning are instantly recognizable in this regard. as stated by Jan Seidler Ramirez, Chief Curator & Director of Collections at the National September 11 Memorial Museum.
To inquire about your museum receiving a donation of a pair of '9/11 Memorial Towers' please contact:
