St. Solomon’s Catacombs abandoned Underground tour - #urbex Pathos Cyprus
Join me as I go underground at the shortly to be renovated catacombs in Pathos. The St. Solomon’s catacombs are very exciting. This great tomb complex is the burial site of the seven Machabee brothers, who were martyred around 174 BC. Their mother was Agia Solomoni, a Jewish woman who became a saint after the death of her sons. It is thought that the space was a synagogue in Roman times. The entrance to the catacomb is marked by a collection of votive rags tied to a large tree outside the tomb.
This old pagan practice of tying rags is continued by Christian visitors today and you will see more rags surrounding the tombs, some attached to copies of icons. Be wary of the lowest section at the base of a set of steep stairs; entering from the bright sunlight, it is hard to discern the water-filled cave at the bottom even with phone torches and then a deep well, which constitutes a potentially dangerous hazard.

Agia Solomonis Catacomb (Paphos, Cyprus)
The church of Agia Solomonis is located at Kato Pafos, Apostolos Pavlos avenue, about a kilometre from Kato Pafos port. It was carved underground out of limestone and was originally a catacomb. The visitor has to go down about twenty steps in order to see the church, the remains of the old 12th century frescoes and the Holy Water. On the rock above the church, there is a large, centuries old, terebinth tree. Hanging a personal offer, usually a handkerchief, is believed to cure the ailments of those who hang it, and many people, both locals and visitors, do so even today.
It consists of an open court surrounded by five rock - cut chambers, one of which has a spring. The west chamber has an apse set into the west wall and remnants of Christian wall paintings ...
Agia Solomoni was one of the first to reject idolatry and embrace Christianity [in Cyprus]. According to tradition, Solomoni took refuge in the cave to escape persecution from the Romans. The Romans walled up the entrance, condemning her to a slow and cruel death. However, when the cave was opened 200 years later, the Saint walked out alive.
The catacomb is a world heritage site.
The Agia Solomoni catacombs Cyprus
The Agia Solomoni catacombs (Catacombs of Agia Solomoni/Agia Solomoni Catacomb) is one of the most famous catacombs of Paphos.
Located catacombs Solomoni in the heart of Kato Paphos, close to Kings Avenue Mall, entrance from the street of Apostolou Pavlou......
Currently, the catacombs is one of the main Christian shrines of Cyprus, which is a small underground paleo-Christian complex, consisting of several caves, partly carved into the rock formations, one of which contains fragments of old frescoes of the 12th century.
Apparently, originally the catacombs were used for burials, and later became a refuge for Christians, persecuted by the persecution. The legend says that Solomoni and his sons were hiding in the catacombs, fleeing from the Romans in the year 168. Soon they were caught and in front of his mother brutally killed the children and then herself. After that, the catacombs were considered sacred, and Solomoni was among the early Christian martyrs, her name and named these catacombs. In the second version of the legend, Solomonia, in an attempt to hide from the Romans, took refuge in these catacombs, but it was bricked up alive in them. Two hundred years later, when the catacombs opened again, Solomoni came out of them alive and healthy.
It is possible, on the basis of the second version of the legend, the source of which is in one of the caves of the catacombs, still harbors old myths that this water has healing and rejuvenating properties, prolonging people's lives and healing from diseases of the eye.
In 9-12 centuries in the catacombs acted the Christian Church.
Near the entrance (descent) to the catacombs is a pistachio tree, the branches of which are tied with colored ribbons left by parishioners and tourists in the hope of healing from diseases....

Located in Kato Pafos, Agia Solomoni Church is a chapel that forms part of a small underground complex of chamber tombs from the Hellenistic period.
