Visit Passau, Germany: Important St. Paul Church and St. Stephan Cathedral
There are a gazillion churches in Passau but the most important are: St. Paul (the oldest) and St. Stephan (famous organ). Organ concerts are the thing in river cruise literature but know that they only take place from April-October. No concert for us. Sigh...

13 Walking Tour Passau Germany December 10 2015
13 Walking Tour Passau Germany December 10 2015. Viking Atla docked in town in Passau, Germany. Our walking tour included Christmas markets near St. Stephen’s Cathedral and a traditional gingerbread tasting and demonstration at Cafe Simon. I loved the chef’s energy, explanations and learning about the different types of gingerbread made with honey and molasses.
I sailed with Viking River Cruise on the Romantic Danube in December 2015. See all 22 videos from my voyage:

And St. Stephen's Cathedral, called Pasawu Cathedral. Founded around 720 and rebuilt in 1668, the cathedral is a significant architectural heritage in harmony with Gothic and Baroque styles. It was crowded with people on Easter. Significant resurrection mass than ever. At this very moment, Mozart had a Mass Mass and a Funeral Mass. The ceiling is full of frescoes. Fresco works that mix sand with lime and put it on the wall before coloring the water before it dries, keeps the temple for 400 years. In every corner of the cathedral, the works that reproduce the treasures of the cathedral show the extreme glamor. But there is a real treasure here. It is the world's largest cathedral pipe organ. The organ, which consists of 223 registers and 17,794 pipes, has a pipe built into the ceiling and inside the wall. In other words, in front of the magnificent music that one of the churches completes a huge pipe organ, the thrill is felt.

Passau, Germany Walking Tour in 4K
To get to know Passau we recommend a walk along the banks of the Inn (for the Innpromenade continuing to the Innkai) to the end of the peninsula where the Inn merges with the Danube, and then descends the other side along the shore of the Danube to the old town hall. From there you can enter the historic center to explore the squares (especially the Domplatz and the Residenzplatz), the palaces and the churches (don't miss St. Stephen's Cathedral). Another interesting and panoramic way to get to know Passau is offered by the passenger boats that go around the three rivers.
In recent years, more and more cruise ships that travel the Danube stop in Passau and the number of tourists arriving in this way in the city, even if only for a few hours, is constantly increasing.
Although it has a long history, Passau is a very young city. This is due to the high number of students attending his university (12,000 students out of 50,000 inhabitants). The city is also an important stop on the Donauradweg, a bike path along the Danube, which runs from the river sources in Germany to the Black Sea. The most beautiful and most visited part of this cycle path runs from Passau to Vienna and many cyclists start this adventure right here in Passau.
Europe: Passau, Germany
Passau, Germany is often called the City of Three Rivers joining the Danube, the Inn, and the ilz rivers.
After Passau was destroyed twice by fire in the end of the 1600s, Italian architects rebuilt in Baroque style and many have titled Passau as the Venice of Germany.
Even Napolean Bonaparte called it the most Italian looking city north of the Alps.
Surrounded by medieval walls, this city was built to protect the highly crucial and valuable trade routes.
The Veste Oberhaus is a fortress that was built in 1219 AD and was used as a stronghold for the Bishop of Passau. It is now a youth hostel, restaurant and museum.
Passau was an important medieval trade and shipping centre. The Inn River Salt Trade and the making of knife and sword blades, were traditional occupations here.
In the past, this Passau wavebreaker served as a trade post and toll booth, collecting taxes on the commercial goods heading up and down the rivers.
Painted across the city, churches and monasteries are unique to the area.
The MariaHilf Monastery is known for the pilgrimage steps or The Heavenly Ladder where 321 sacred steps take you to the top of the ridge for prayer.
Only housing 50,000 inhabitants the 53 churches in the city makes it one of the highest people to church ratio around.
Being at the center of three merging rivers, floods are quite common which have been marked over the years on the church's wall.
As the dusk rolls in, the beautiful lights of the city awaken, and the energy of the night life can be felt, here in this modest city.
And in the center, one of the most famous churches in Europe, St. Stephen's Cathedral, Containing the second largest pipe organ in the world and bell towers that weigh 13,000 pounds or as much as a fully grown African Elephant.
This church was built, mixing the gothic style of architecture, with the Baroque style, after half the church burned down in the late 1600's.
The now rebuilt church towers over the city like a fatherly guardian.
Beautiful frescoes can be seen and enjoyed from the ceilings, as religious folk and tourists flock to the cathedral to pray and admire its beauty.
The City of Three Rivers known for its strategic location on the Danube River, beautiful churches, Monasteries and baroque styled housing shining over the river's edge, with Strongholds and fortresses dominating the hillside. This is Passau, Germany.
