The western wall of the monastery refectory holds a painting of the Last Supper, one of the most famous paintings on the Adriatic coast made on the tradition of Venetian painters Veronese and Tintoretti. Traditionally it is attributed to Mateo Rosseli, but according to recent studies to one of our painters Mateo Ponzzoni Pončun.
The monastery museum holds valuable paintings, collection of money, incunabulas and a copy of Ptolemy's atlas from 1524. A famous old cypress tree grows in the monastery garden, besides its old age known also for its amorphic form. This ancient cypress does not grow in height as other specimens of that kind, but with its flat branches grows horizontally across the garden. The Way of the Cross leads from the monastery to town, marked by 14 chapels representing 14 Stations of the Cross, built in the 18th century.

The Zagreb Cathedral on Kaptol is a Roman Catholic institution and not only the tallest building in Croatia but also the most monumental sacral building in Gothic style southeast of the Alps.[3] It is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and to kings Saint Stephen and Saint Ladislaus. The cathedral is typically Gothic, as is its sacristy, which is of great architectural value. Its prominent spires are considered to be landmarks as they are visible from most parts of the city.
In 1093 when King Ladislaus (1040-1095) moved the bishop's chair from Sisak to Zagreb, he proclaimed the existing church as a cathedral. Construction on the cathedral started shortly after his death and was finished in 1217 and consecrated by king Andrew II of Hungary. The building was destroyed by the Mongols in 1242 but rebuilt by bishop Timotej (1263-1287) a few years later. At the end of the 15th century, the Ottoman Empire invaded Croatia, triggering the construction of fortification walls around the cathedral, some of which are still intact. In the 17th century, a fortified renaissance watchtower was erected on the south side, and was used as a military observation point, because of the Ottoman threat.
The cathedral was severely damaged in the 1880 Zagreb earthquake. The main nave collapsed and the tower was damaged beyond repair. The restoration of the cathedral in the Neo-Gothic style was led by Hermann Bollé, bringing the cathedral to its present form. As part of that restoration, two spires 108 m (354 ft) high were raised on the western side, both of which are now in the process of being restored as part of an extensive general restoration of the cathedral. The cathedral is depicted on the reverse of the Croatian 1000 kuna banknote issued in 1993.[5]

At an evening Mass celebrated in Budapest's Basilica by a special emissary of Pope John Paul II, Bishop Angelo Sodano, Patriarch Bartholomeos I of Constantinople, head of the Eastern Orthodox Church, announced the recognition of St. Stephen by the Eastern Orthodox Church as one of its own saints.
High clergy from both east and west attended.
In a statement to the state Hungarian news agency, Sodano welcomed the canonization of St. Stephen by the Eastern Orthodox Church, saying the move may mean a return to unity of the two churches, despite the painful differences of the past centuries.
Roughly 60 percent of Hungary's 10 (m) million people are Catholic, while fewer than 1 percent are Eastern Orthodox.
After the Mass, the festivities were to continue with a religious procession in which relics were to be taken to the House of Parliament, where St. Stephen's crown is on permanent display.
The relics include a part of St. Stephen's skull, on loan from a Dominican monastery in Dubrovnik, Croatia, where it has been since 1590, when it was hidden for safekeeping from Tartars who invaded the region; and the king's right hand, called the Holy Right, usually on display in the Basilica.
Church officials expected 100-thousand people to participate.

We have finally made it to one of my dream destinations. We're in Hvar, Croatia so and oh my it is beautiful. Today we have blue skies so we're just going to run around like crazy to show you guys Hvar.
As you probably already know, we never start sightseeing without a good meal, so the first item on our list was to find some breakfast. This proved to be a little tricky considering we were visiting during low season, but after a few false starts we settled down at BB Club for shakshuka, omelettes, nutella crepes and cappuccinos.
With bellies full, we were ready explore and our eyes were set on the fortress, which is the focal point when you gaze up from the Old Town.
Reaching the fortress means walking straight uphill, but there are a few scenic stops along the way, including a beautiful park, a seemingly abandoned church, and plenty of lookouts where you can admire the town and the harbour.
After visiting the fort, we came back to the Old Town and decided to go on a little walk along the waterfront. We hadn’t packed any bathing suits and it was too late in the season to go for a swim, but Audrey was set on testing out the turquoise waters.
Continuing our wander through Hvar Town without a particular place or direction in mind, we then came across a medieval Venetian bell tower that we had noticed peeking through the buildings. The bell tower is part of the Ruins of the Dominican Monastery and St. Mark's Church, and while the structure is closed off, it’s still a cool landmark to visit.
We went to KOGO which is located in the main square just footsteps from St. Stephen’s Cathedral. They specialize in pizzas and pastas, and everything was so tasty!
Lastly, to finish up our 1-day tour of Hvar Town, we walked back to the marina, this time heading left in the direction of the Franciscan Monastery, where we were treated to a magical sunset complete with live music.
