Lakhs of pilgrims visit Malayattoor during the Lenten season, especially of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and on the Feast Day of St. Thomas called Puthunjayar. On 4th September 1998 Kurisumudy was declared an Archdiocesan Shrine and on 11th of February in 2004 it was declared an International Shrine. The Pope Pius V on 20th August 1909 granted through an indult plenary indulgence, who visit the pilgrim Centre of St. Thomas. Pope John II has renewed it and granted plenary indulgence to those are unable to climb Kurisumudy who visit the mother Church. The present church is built in Indian art and Gothic architecture. The new church is of 12186 square feet in width. The inside and portico of the church is paneled with teak wood. The inside of the church is simply marvelous. Anybody get a peaceful atmosphere for prayer. Inside the Church many more attractions like historical museum of St. Thomas, missionary activities etc. are in the mind of Church authorities.

St. Thomas is believed to have landed in Kerala at Kodungallur (Cranganore) in AD 50 and was engaged in evangelical activity. AD 62 St Thomas returns to Malankara coast via Malayatur where he establishes ‘the half Church’ (a small Christian community dependant on the Church of Maliamkara).
Oral tradition says that while travelling through Malayattor, faced with hostile natives, he fled to the hilltop where he is said to have remained in prayer and that he left his foot prints on one of the rocks. According to beliefs, a cross formed on one of the rocks, upon his touch. The chief festival is on the first Sunday after Easter. It is traditionally believed that St. Thomas used to make the Sign of the Cross on the rock, kiss it and pray at Kurisumudi. The story has it that a miraculous golden cross appeared at that particular spot. Pilgrims going up the hill to call out incessantly Ponnum Kurishu Muthappo, Ponmala Kayattom, meaning O Patriarch of the Golden Cross! Climb we shall, this golden hill! This Shrine was promoted to Archdiocesan status by Archbishop Mar Varkey Vithayathil on 4 September 1998. There is also a very ancient Church in the name of St Thomas (Estd. 900) at Malayattoor on the bank of Periyar River which serves as the parish Church at present. The annual festival of this church is known as 'Malayatoor Perunal' and it is celebrated in the months of March–April.
St. Thomas and Thamizakam The place of St. Thomas in the life of Tamil believers is something not to be overlooked. Anyone would be moved at the sight of an ardent but the simple faith of a Tamil pilgrim, a usual seen on the mountain. According to Rt. Rev. Dr. Soosa Pakiami the Archbishop of Trivandrum, Muthappan the name by which the devotes invoke St. Thomas on the mountain, may have come from Tamizakam. A good number of pilgrims that visit Kurisumudy and seek Muthappan's blessings is from Tamil Nadu. The vital role played by the caravan route that existed between Kodungalloor and Madras from time immemorial has certainly contributed to this spiritual and cultural bond that exists between Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Later on the hunters went to the mountain for hunting.While they stayed in the night they saw a glittering sign of cross on the rock.Out of curiosity they struck there with their rude weapons. To their surprise blood gushed out. They ran to the valley and told the locals. They went to the mountain and while they prayed there they got many miracles. Malayattoor Pilgrimage on Good Friday
We climbed up the hill at Malayatoor on the Good Friday of 2017. More than a million of pilgrims climb up the hill as a sacrifice, some come alone, some come in groups and families, some carry a cross, some carry a cornerstone for their house. It is a moment of belongingness to Christ for the pilgrims who come to Malayatoor. Most of the pilgrims coming to Malayatoor are from Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

One of the famous pilgrim centres in Kerala, Malayattoor is located on the slopes of the picturesque Western Ghats, 52 kms from Kochi beside the Periyar River. 'Malayattoor' literally means the meeting place of land, mountain and river. It is the first pilgrim centre in India to be accorded international status by the Holy See, the official seat of the Vatican. It is also the largest pilgrim centre in the name of St. Thomas in India. Thousands of pilgrims of all castes and creed undertake the pilgrimage to St. Thomas church, located on top of the hillock Kurishumudi (hill of the holy cross) during the annual festival -Malayattoor Perunnal held in March/April, 8 days after Easter.
There are two churches in Malayattoor dedicated to St. Thomas, one of the 12 apostles of Jesus Christ - one on top of the hillock (Kurishumudi) and the other below. Malayattoor St. Thomas Parish Church or Thazathe Palli (the church below) was built in AD 900.
The church facade has the traditional Roman architecture but the altar is typically Greek in style. Behind the central altar there are carved designs and paintings including the five stations of joyful mysteries of Lord Jesus Christ. The church divided into three wings have separate facilities for confession and adoration. There is an ancient baptismal pond and a traditional pulpit which are of historical relevance.
The pilgrimage to Malayattoor traces back its origin to the visit of the saint to Kerala in AD 52. It is believed that it was St. Thomas who brought Christianity to Kerala. According to the legends, when the saint first came to Malayatoor he had to face a very hostile reception and was forced to flee to the top of the mountain. There he prayed intensely for days together making sign of the cross on the rock. It is believed that Mother Mary appeared to console and strengthen him. Later at this spot on the rock, a golden cross was found. Thus the hillock came to be known as 'Ponnin Kurishumudi' (hill of the golden cross). Nearby the saints footprints and marks of his knees were also found on the rock.
Kurishumudi is located 2km south from Malayattoor St. Thomas Parish Church or Thazathe Palli. The church on top of Kurishumudi was built in 1893 over the golden cross, at 1269 feet above sea level and can be reached only on foot.
footprintsNear the Golden cross, a little below there are the footprints (Kaalpadam) of the great saint embedded in the hard rock. The footprints are protected in a glass encasing. Pilgrims pray here to receive favours and miracle cures from the saint. Towards the east the ruins (a wall )of an ancient chapel (Aana Kuthiya Palli) still remains, but one can find the bearings of the tuskers who tried to demolish it when the place used to be surrounded by thick jungle.
This was the first building to be built on top of the hill in 1595. Now a new small shrine is erected in its place with the ruined wall of the ancient church protected in a glass encasing. A miraculous well situated near the ancient chapel is believed to be the spot from where St. Thomas quenched his thirst during his time of prayer. Legend says that the saint feeling thirsty, struck the rock from which fresh water started flowing. Pilgrims consider the water in the well to possess divine power to heal ailments.
Located at the peak of the mount the Marthoma Mandapam, an attractive building carved in accordance with Greco-Indian architecture preserves the precious relics and a statue of St. Thomas. The building is erected in such a way that the relic is placed twenty steps above the ground which symbolizes the twenty years of St Thomas's missionary works in South India. Sannidhi, a spacious place for worship with a capacity to accommodate 10,000 people is located at the northern most part of the mount. Piyatha sculpture moulded at the top is the main attraction of Sannidhi. Marthoma Bhavan here was erected in 1972 to commemorate the 19th death anniversary of St. Thomas.
At the foot step of the hill, is the statue of St. Thomas erected in 1938, perched on a rock to protect it from the menacing trunks of the elephants.The distance from the foot to the top of the Kurishumudi at 1269 feet, is around 2.5km- 3km and takes around 1 hour to 1.5 hours to climb. Pilgrims in very large numbers chanting the name of the Apostle ('Ponninkurisumala Muthappa Ponmalakayattam'), climb Kurisumudi, to visit the holy shrine especially during the Lent season. Some of the devotees carry crosses, stones, brooms etc. while some kneel and climb up the mountain. Along the way there are the 14 stations of the cross where devotees stop to pray. Some devotees offer gold chain, crosses, pepper, images of human parts and domestic animals in gold or silver etc. for their health and prosperity.

St. Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ arrived Kerala in A.D 52. He travelled from Palestine to India with some traders and landed at Kodungallur, which was a port in Arabian Sea at that time. Historical evidences prove beyond doubt that there were many Jewish families in and around Kodungalloor and it was a well-known business Centre during the last years B.C. and early centuries of A.D.
There are strong and living traditions backing the arrival of St. Thomas at Malayattoor. Malayattoor is a place where hill (Mala) river (Aar) and land (Uru) come together. During the first centuries there were only two possibilities for travelers, either they used boats or caravan. It is believed that St. Thomas used both ways to reach Malayattoor.
Malayattoor is a small and beautiful village on the banks of Holy River Periyar. It is believed that Malayattoor and surroundings were well known trade center. Even now the foot of Kurisumudi is known as Vaniyathadamor Vanibhathadam (center of traders and center of trading). Another way of travelling was through the hill’s valley, either on foot or on the caravan. This caravan route was the connecting link between the two famous ports namely Kodungalloor and Madurai in Chera (Kerala) and Pandya (Tamilnadu)states.
In A.D. 62 St. Thomas, during his second missionary journey, preached the gospel to the natives of Malayattoor. Since Thomas’ language, way of life and attire were strange to the local people they could not accept him. His life was threatened. He went to Kurisumudy hill and stayed there in prayer. During his prayer he used to sign the cross on the rock. While he was praying Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to him and strengthened him saying that his mission will be a success. He came down and evangelized the natives of Malayattoor.
St. Thomas Christians at Malayattoor, in remembrance of their father in faith used to celebrate the feast of St. Thomas on the first Sunday after Easter and climb Kurisumudy and pray there before the cross. They also saw the foot prints of St. Thomas near to the Cross. Somehow this Kurisumudy mount stayed in oblivion till 600A.D. Once tribal hunters, during their hunting saw something glittering on the rock. They tried to unearth the glittering piece from the rock. Suddenly blood came out from that place. They got shocked and frightened. They came down to the village and informed about the incident. The Christians of Malayattoor climbed the hill and saw that was the cross which their forefathers used to venerate. They lighted a lamp there before the cross. Whenever the light was off wild goats used to come down and cry aloud to inform the Christians that the light was off. Then the Christians will climb the hill and light the lamp. In order to feed the goats people began to offer Sesame. The Mar Thoma Community of Malayattoor flourished. In A.D. 900 the present church was built although it has been modified and renovated many a time. On 7th February 1986 Pope John Paul II blessed the foundation stone of the new church during his pilgrimage to India. The foundation stone was laid by late His Eminence Varkey Cardinal Vithayathil on 1st January 1999. The new church is being completed and shall be consecrated by Mar George Alanchery the present Major Arch Bishop of Syro - Malabar Church, on 15th of January 2012 at 2.30pm. Many Archbishops and Bishops of different Churches will participate.
After the consecration of the church we have planned a public meeting. Sri.OommanChandy, The Honorable Chief Minister of Kerala, will inaugurate the public Meeting. We are expecting many political leaders, like central ministers, state ministers, MPs and MLAs and religious leaders of various Christian Churches and other religions.
