Travel Croatia - Visiting St. James Church in Sibenik
Take a tour of Sibenik St. James Church in Sibenik, Croatia -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
The greatest church in Sibenik, Croatia is undoubtedly the magnificent Cathedral of Saint James.
Though the finished building is an impressive work, the project took a long time to complete.
Plans for the cathedral existed as long ago as the latter part of the thirteenth century.
However, construction did not start until 1402 and wasn't finished until the year 1536.
Saint James' exterior features beautiful rose windows, tall, sculpted domes, and a large barrel roof.
The church is just a few hundred feet from Sibenik's bay on the Adriatic.

They're known as the Keepers of Balkan History.
In an isolated monastery this small sect of poor monks is keeping guard over a priceless collection of religious icons and documents stretching back hundreds of years.
And now there are plans to allow the public to get a glimpse of the hidden treasures.
STORYLINE:
A small group of Franciscan monks who live in an isolated monastery on the hills above the Bosnian town of Fojnica are known as the 'Keepers of Balkan History'.
The Catholic order have had a presence in the Balkans for more than 700 years and during that period they have amassed countless priceless religious icons and documents which detail the region's story.
The Franciscan order of monks was founded by St. Francis of Assisi around 1209, and they adhere to a strict vow of poverty.
In Bosnia the Franciscans survived the Ottoman Empire, Austro-Hungarian rule, and in the twentieth century two world wars and the bloody Balkan wars at the end of 20th century.
Father Mirko Majdandzic is the guardian of the monastery's treasures.
He cradles the precious book which explains the history of Bosnia, Serbia, Croatia, Macedonia and Bulgaria.
The book documents the original medieval coat of arms of each of these countries.
Franciscans have been keeping the records of everything that has happened in the region since their arrival in Bosnia.
Original crown insignia of the countries that used to make up the socialist state of Yugoslavia have been secretly kept here for centuries.
Father Mirko Majdandzic says the Franciscans kept the original armorials (drawings of heraldic arms) of the famous Kings of the middle ages.

Eric Clark's Travel Videos - Zagreb Croatia - Cathedral on Kaptol is Roman Catholic 1 of the Top 10
I am hitting all the top 10 tourist sites in Zagreb. This is 1 of the Top 10. = )
From Wikipedia
The Zagreb Cathedral on Kaptol is a Roman Catholic institution and not only the tallest building in Croatia but also the most monumental sacral building in Gothic style southeast of the Alps.[3] It is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and to kings Saint Stephen and Saint Ladislaus. The cathedral is typically Gothic, as is its sacristy, which is of great architectural value. Its prominent spires are considered to be landmarks as they are visible from most parts of the city.
In 1093 when King Ladislaus (1040-1095) moved the bishop's chair from Sisak to Zagreb, he proclaimed the existing church as a cathedral. Construction on the cathedral started shortly after his death and was finished in 1217 and consecrated by king Andrew II of Hungary. The building was destroyed by the Mongols in 1242 but rebuilt by bishop Timotej (1263-1287) a few years later. At the end of the 15th century, the Ottoman Empire invaded Croatia, triggering the construction of fortification walls around the cathedral, some of which are still intact. In the 17th century, a fortified renaissance watchtower was erected on the south side, and was used as a military observation point, because of the Ottoman threat.
The cathedral was severely damaged in the 1880 Zagreb earthquake. The main nave collapsed and the tower was damaged beyond repair. The restoration of the cathedral in the Neo-Gothic style was led by Hermann Bollé, bringing the cathedral to its present form. As part of that restoration, two spires 108 m (354 ft) high were raised on the western side, both of which are now in the process of being restored as part of an extensive general restoration of the cathedral. [4]
The cathedral is depicted on the reverse of the Croatian 1000 kuna banknote issued in 1993.[5]
When facing the portal, the building is 46 meters wide and 108 meters high.[6] The cathedral contains a relief of Cardinal Aloysius Stepinac with Christ done by the Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović. The cathedral was visited by Pope Benedict XVI on 5 June 2011 where he celebrated Sunday Vespers and prayed before the tomb of Blessed Aloysius Stepinac.

The Cloister of the Franciscan Monastery in Dubrovnik
The Romanesque cloister of the Franciscan Monastery is one of the finest features of Dubrovnik’s architecture.
This magnificent 14th-century creation of local sculptor Mihoje Brajkov consists of rows of elegant double-pillared columns encircling the Monastery’s inner courtyard.
Besides the similar one on Badija, also belonging to Franciscans, the cloister is considered as one of the most beautiful structures of that kind in Croatia.
