Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church In Donetsk
What You Need To Know:
✓ Greek Catholic church is still operating in Donetsk despite the conflict
✓ Many priests belonging to the Greek Catholic Church have left the region
✓ If there are people, there will be a church,” Father Mykhailo explains
In Donetsk city, a Greek Catholic church is still operating despite the conflict and despite the reported pressure felt by the non-Orthodox religious organisations from the pro-Russia separatist authorities.
“Undoubtedly, the number of wedding ceremonies, which are more joyful services, is smaller,” Father Mykhailo a priest who serves at the church said, but “christenings take place…because [people] feel they are in danger”.
According to Father Mykhailo, many of the priests belonging to the Greek Catholic Church in the Donetsk region have left – some out of fear, others because of the unpredictable nature of the situation.
Some of the church has been damaged from the fighting. Cracks can be seen in the walls. The refectory windows have been shattered and mine fragments have also damaged its outside.
“But all these things don’t matter. All of this is just in addition to the people. Because if there are people, there will be a church,” Father Mykhailo explained to Hromadske.

In the darkness of the eve before Pascha, or Easter, Ukrainian Greek Catholics gather at liturgy to continue to venerate the dead Christ through the the icon of the plaschenytsia. Known as a nadhrobne, it is a service at the tomb. People bow and venerate the cloth icon as they arrive, and the choir chants from the psalms and other prayers. The priest eventually takes the plaschenytsia and places it on the altar.
The celebrants change their vestments from red for mourning to white for celebration, beginning a part of the service known as the Resurrection Matins. An icon of the risen Christ is presented to the faithful, among lit candles signaling the light of Christ brought back into the world. A procession leaves the church, into the dark streets, to indeed bring the image of Christ into the world. When the procession returns to the church, the priests knocks on the closed door of the church, and proclaims for the first time the message, Khrystos voskres! Christ is risen! The community is blessed three times with the message, Khrystos voskres! and they answer each time Voistynu Voskrese! He is risen indeed!
The service continues inside with the continued singing of Matins and the celebration of the Divine Liturgy.

With the reopening of the Lviv Seminary, an extraordinary chapter in the life of the Greek Catholic Church in Ukraine is accomplished. For over 70 years of communist rule wherein no religious training was possible, the seminary opening is a symbol of the freedom of the Greek Catholic Church in Ukraine. What today is reality, belonged to yesterdays dreams and hidden hopes raised from the underground.
The 26-minute documentary considers the story of the reconstruction and reopening of the Lviv seminary, this symbol of new life.

Ukrainian Greek Catholics share unique perspective on St....
The Institute of Pope Clement, belonging to the Ukrainian Catholic University in Rome, recently held a conference on St. Paul.“Christians, both Catholics and Orthodox, almost every day listen to the readings from the Apostle St. Paul. But do they really hear? Do they really understand him? So our first task is to give our students and everyone else, Ukrainians, the possibility to get acquainted with St. Paul.”Ukrainians, dispersed all over the world for various reasons, have a particular sensitivity to the cultural variations that resonate with St. Paul, Apostle to the Nations.“St. Paul was a Jew, but was the Apostle to the Nations, to the Gentiles. He also had a unique point of view, being ‘all things for all people’. And not to be too haughty, but we could provide that point of view -- kind of an Eastern point of view for the West, a Western point of view, in some sense, for the East. And hopefully, of course, by doing step one, first learning about St. Paul for ourselves, we can help the Church in the whole world.”
