Chr. von A. Terentius Varro Murena erobert.

With its 900 inhabitants, the historic town of Glorenza in the south of Malles/Mals is one of the smallest cities in the world. First mentioned in 1304 as Glurns, Glorenza has hardly changed over the centuries. This gem of the Upper Venosta Valley has a medieval centre and boasts the only intact enclosed fortification, complete with fully preserved ramparts and picturesque gate towers.
Südtirol - Gemeinde Schluderns im Vinschgau / Alto Adige - Comune di Sluderno in Val Venosta
Sluderno is a village with a rich history. Located below the imposing Coira Castle, it is probably the best-preserved Renaissance fortification in the entire South Tyrol and also contains a huge armoury museum. This old farming village also found itself at the centre of historic battles and conflicts between the aristocracy, the episcopate and local farmers. Located at the intersection between the Upper and Central Venosta Valleys, it was one of the first settlements governed by written municipal laws dating back to the 13th century. Nearby Sluderno and to the local Vintschger Museum is the archeological site of Ganglegg, containing relics from the Bronze and Iron Ages. It's fortifications date back to the Roman Era.

Places to see in ( Bolzano - Italy )
Places to see in ( Bolzano - Italy )
Bolzano is a city in the South Tyrol province of north Italy, set in a valley amid hilly vineyards. It's a gateway to the Dolomites mountain range in the Italian Alps. In the medieval city center, the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology features the Neolithic mummy called Ötzi the Iceman. Nearby is the imposing 13th-century Mareccio Castle, and the Duomo di Bolzano cathedral with its Romanesque and Gothic architecture.
Bolzano, the provincial capital of South Tyrol (known within the province as Südtirol, or in Italy as Alto Adige), is anything but provincial. Once a stop on the coach route between Italy and the flourishing Austro-Hungarian Empire, this small city is worldly and engaged, a long-time conduit between cultures. Its quality of life – one of the highest in Italy – is reflected in its openness, youthful energy and an all-pervading greenness. A stage-set-pretty backdrop of grassy, rotund hills sets off rows of pastel-painted townhouses, while bicycles ply riverside paths and wooden market stalls are laid out with Alpine cheese, speck (cured ham) and dark, seeded loaves. German may be the first language of 95% of the region, but Bolzano is an anomaly. Today its Italian-speaking majority – a legacy of Mussolini's brutal Italianisation program of the 1920s and the more recent siren call of education and employment opportunities – looks both north and south for inspiration.
Bolzano is the capital city of South Tyrol, the German speaking region in the northern part of Italy. Bolzano is the largest city in the region. Its archaeology museum is famous worldwide as the home of the alpine iceman Ötzi. It is also known as the Italian Capital of Christmas thanks to its characteristic Christmas market.
The city is administratively composed of 5 districts with a district mayor and council. These are:
City Centre - Bozner Boden/Piani di Bolzano-Rentsch/Rencio
Oberau/Oltrisarco-Haslach/Aslago
Europa-Neustift/Novacella
Don Bosco
Gries-St.Quirein/San Quirino
Bolzano has been a trading point since its foundation owing to its location between the two major cities of Venice and Augsburg. In 1262 it was elevated to a Stadt (city). In 1363 Bolzano became part of the Habsburg monarchy as part of the county of Tyrol. Four times a year a market was held and traders came from the south and the north. The mercantile magistrate was therefore founded in 1635. Every market season two Italian and two German officers (appointed from the traders who operated there) held this office. The city was a cultural crossroads at that time.
Bolzano has many special features: it's an Italian city with Austrian flair. In the city centre you will mostly hear people speak German or Austro-Bavarian. Nowadays, however, Italian- and German-speaking people are living together in bilingual Bolzano. Generally Bozner or Bolzanini are friendly and helpful. Most German-speaking people can speak Italian but Italian-speaking people are unlikely to be able to speak German. Nevertheless many young people can also speak English and a few can speak French too. In South Tyrolean schools the learning of the second language (Italian for German-speakers and vice-versa) and of English is compulsory.

The renowned Arcades, Via dei Portici with its arcades begins at the western side of Town Hall Square. This is definitely one of the most visited streets of the town. Not only are the Arcades the heart of commercial life in Bolzano, but they are also regarded as one of the best known shopping centres, thanks to the uninterrupted sequence of elegant, traditional and modern shops with their particularly attractive windows.
The town of Bolzano was founded around 1180 AD. Its first street, the Lauben-Gasse or Arcaded Street, has remained the pulsating centre of the flourishing trading town. It runs for 300 metres from east to west. The Arcades, once Bolzano's only street, came into being all at once. The prince bishop of Trento provided the building ground (former venyards), awarded the intentionally narrow buildings plots to tradesmen and craftsmen, and gave exact instructions as to how they were to be developed.
The new town consisted of the Episcopal administrative seat in the present-day Korn-Platz and the houses beneath the arcades. It lay along the Emperors' Route from Brennero to Rome, which Holy Roman Emperors travelled along on their way to the crowned in the eternal city. On they northern side the houses of the arcades abutted the old town wall built in 1277 by Count Meinhard II of Tyrol, while the present day Silber Gasse (Argentieri road) was on the southern side comprising two towers, a wall and defensive ditch.
The street was entered at both ends by a gate. Market women sold fruit and vegetables in front of the Upper Gate, the present day Fruit Market (Obstmarkt), from 1180. Initially the Romanesque-style houses were single-storey with an arched stone portico in front. The ground floor had to be built of stone; the upstairs floor could be timber-framed. However, after several devastating fires the first floor also had to be built of stone with an arched ceiling. On the street side the cellar area was often three levels deep, though only one at the rear.
A water channel called the Ritsch, diverted from the River Talvera, ran along the southern side of the street. A typical house beneath the arcades is only four strides (four yards) wide, 50 metres deep and consists of a section facing the street, plus a central and rear section separated by atriums. The houses are packed together with a space of around one foot required for the statics of the Romanesque stone walls, visible in the passageway to the Troilo house, from the arcades side (no. 51) to the Silber-Gasse (Argentieri road).

-----------------
The Guncina walk, dedicated to its founder – Archduke Henry of Habsburg – unravels to the hillside of the Gries quarter (an independent municipality until 1925 and famous holiday and health resort of the empire of Hapsburg) leading to San Genesio. The walk through evergreen bushes, magnolias, prickly bears, cypress trees and cedar wood takes to Guncina Castle. Each plant encountered on the way is labelled by its Italian, German and scientific name. The walk is a gentle climb and has several benches along its path to provide rest and the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful view of the city and mountain groups rising to the east. After reaching Guncina Castle it is possible to return to the city by taking the Rio Fago walk leading to the Lungo Talvera and therefore the centre of Bolzano.
-----------------
