Nordlingen, Germany - Old town area (medieval) with intact wall still standing

Going back as far as 898 A.D., it is now the only walled town in Germany where the wall is still intact all the way around it - about 3 km in total length. We visited in October 2012 and spent an entire afternoon in this charming town on the Romantic Road (Romantische Straße) of Germany, located in the region of Bavaria.
Ed does the narration and most of the video filming while I do most of the still photos and then edit all of it to create this You Tube upload.

Nördlingen

Today i show you one of my favourite towns nearby! I love it to take a little walk on the city wall and the town centre. Maybe this video is able to transmit the feeling of beeing there to you guys.

Nördlingen is a town in the Donau-Ries district, in Bavaria, Germany, with a population of approximately 24,000. It was first mentioned in recorded history in 898, and in 1998 the town celebrated its 1100th anniversary. The town was the location of two battles during the Thirty Years' War, which took place between 1618–1648. Today it is one of only three towns in Germany that still has a completely established city wall, the other two being Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Dinkelsbühl.

Another attraction in the town is the Saint Georg's Church's 90 m steeple, called Daniel, which is made of a suevite impact breccia that contains shocked quartz. Other notable buildings are the town hall (which dates to the 13th century), St. Salvator church and the Spital, a former medieval hospital. The Ries crater museum is located in the well-preserved medieval tanner's quarter.

The city is home to several other museums, such as the Bavarian Railway Museum, the Nördlingen city museum (Stadtmuseum), the city wall museum (Stadtmauermuseum) and Augenblick museum with panoramas, magic lanterns, silent films, barrel organs, pianolas, music boxes and gramophones.

Nördlingen is also known for the Scharlachrennen, a horse riding tournament that was first mentioned in 1463.

As all the tourist guides mention,
it shares with its neighbours to the north
(Rothenburg and Dinkelsbühl) the distinction of
being one of the only remaining walled medieval
towns in Germany. Nördlingen, however, is far
less crowded than the other two and offers an
additional attraction of geological interest -
being located in the crater of a meteorite impact
and with its impressive tower being built of the
rock formed from that impact.

Moldavite is a green tektite. A tektite is an impact glass, created due to the impact of a meteorite with the earth's crust. It is believed that the meteorite that created the Ries Kessel (a massive 15 mile diameter crater), 120 miles away in Germany splashed, hot material into the atmosphere that cooled as it fell back to Earth. This impact material, landed across a relatively small (10 to 15 square mile) area in the current Czech Republic. This impact event is dated around 15 million years ago. Moldavite miners must dig holes to access this old layer in which the Moldavite is found.
Moldavites are a type of tektite and specimens are a rich emerald or olive green color, highly translucent, and often button or teardrop shaped. The most desirable examples display a remarkable fluted or feathered surface that may have been caused by long-term water erosion. Most moldavites are modest in size and it is unusual to see specimens larger than about twenty grams.
Moldavites are found in a relatively small area incorporating Bohemia and Moravia in the Czech Republic, and may have been formed during the 15 million year-old impact at Nordlinger Ries in Germany.

Nordlingen and OGEG Ampflwang Railway Museums

Recorded these whilst on holiday in Germany and Austra. Unfortunately the museum at Nordlingen resembled a scrap yard in places , but the two best engines were locked away so could only spot them through the key hole in the roundhouse. Hit lucky at the Lokpark OGEG museum at ampflwang as it was a special day giving free train rides which is usually extra on the reasonable 8 euro entrance fee. Quite a good trip with superb weather included.

Class 41 Number 1150 Run By at Dombühl, Bavaria, Germany

Our charter train out of the Bayrisches Eisenbahn Museum in Nördlingen, Bavaria, Germany. Class 41 1150 is a freight steam locomotive operated by the museum. This short scene is at the small village of Dombühl. DB Regio trains have a scheduled stop there, but the station building has been abandoned. Here in Dombühl a secondary, non electrified line branches off and runs via Dinkelsbühl back to Nördlingen. This line has no passenger service and sees very little freight traffic. Apparently there is a strong movement afoot to reopen this track to regional passenger service.

In the fourth episode of our Hungary road trip series, we're exploring maybe the most unique vehicle graveyards of the country. From legendary jet fighters to partially one hundred-year-old steam engines, we discovered true achievements from Soviet years. Also this time, we had to be especially careful since many adventurers before us have been caught here in the past. Well-prepared, we started two infiltrations of the most impressive vehicle graveyards we have experienced so far!

Besuch im Nördlinger Eisenbahnmuseum.............

mit tollen restaurierten alten Lokomotiven und Wagons !!
Aber es gibt auch einige rostige Überreste von einst stolzen Dampflokomotiven auf dem Freigelände.
