SCOTLAND: Staffa Island and the Isle of Iona
On our last day in Scotland, we finished with a bang! We took a tour with Staffa Tours to go see Staffa Island, with Fingal's cave and the puffins, and the sacred Isle of Iona, where Christianity was introduced to the early Scots and much of Europe. We saw and learned so much, and this was my favorite day of the whole trip!

Iona is located just off the Isle of Mull's south west tip. Most people staying on Mull make the journey over to Iona at some point during their stay and this little video shows you a little of what there is to see.
The Isle of Iona plays an important role in the history of christianity. Iona Abbey can be visited and tickets are bought on the island.
There are some amazing beaches on Iona and we look at a few of these, as well as Dun I the island's highest point.
We hope this video is useful for anyone interested in things to do on Iona.

Felix Mendelssohn, after visiting Fingal's Cave on the island of Staffa, was inspired to write his famous Hebrides Overture in 1832. The basalt columns that rise up from the sea are an extraordinary site, and it was the Vikings who named the island after the Old Norse name Staffa meaning pillar of stave.
Exploring Mull, Staffa & Iona
After leaving Glasgow, we headed to Mull via Oban, where we ate some seafood and checked out the distillery. The Isle of Mull is known as the 'Highlands in miniature' and has an incredible craggy coastline, deep sea lochs and beautiful sand beaches.
The islands of Staffa and Iona make for a fantastic day trip from Mull - we spent an hour surrounded by puffins on Staffa, and climbed a hill for great views on Iona.
We hiked to the Carsaig Arches where we saw feral goats, waterfalls and sea stacks, and ended up in the capital of Mull, Tobermory - where we ate a fish supper.

If you have been watching the other videos of our Three Isles Tour series then you will know that visiting Iona is the final island destination of the tour. If you haven't seen the earlier videos, see a list of links to them in the description below.
As we approached Iona, the skipper of our small boat advised the best place to have lunch was the restaurant close to the ferry pickup point as the hotel would have finished serving at this time. This we did and a nice lunch it was. Of course as part of my lunch I has to try a plate of those fresh local mussels mentioned by our coach driver who drove us from Craignure to Fionnphort. My wife took a notion for her favourite soup, Cullen Skink which she said was delicious.
With lunch out of the way, we set off to visit the Abbey. Things are very quiet here on Iona with just the handful of visitors like ourselves and the few friendly locals we passed on the way.
Very soon we arrived at the ruins of the Nunnery which dates to the 13th century. You will find a poster here which gives good details about its history.
Carrying on along this small path takes us back onto the main road where after a short walk we reached the Graves of the Kings and in the left hand corner sits St Oran’s Chapel.
Kings from Scotland, Ireland and France lie here and perhaps surprisingly due to the history of Iona, Viking kings as well. Even Macbeth, yes that Macbeth of Shakespeare fame. Another, although not a king is John Smith who was the leader of the Labour Party in 1992 until he died of a heart attack 1994.
Just next to the Graves of the Kings is where you will buy the tickets to the Abbey. There is so much to see in both the Abbey and the museum that you will need to keep moving along, if you don't want to miss your ferry.
The museum is a must, as this is where so many interesting items have been placed including a replica of the Book of Kells.
For us it was time to head back and catch the ferry for the short crossing back to Fionnphort. As with the time on Staffa flying by, the same applies here on Iona. There are hotels in Iona as there are in Fionnphort so the next time we visit this area we will be staying for a longer spell.
The crossing time is only around 20 minutes but if the weather is clear and you look to the south, you will be able to pick out the easily recognised Paps of Jura.
Embarking from the ferry it's only a short walk to our coaches waiting in the car park. Now we will be heading back to catch the Craignure to Oban ferry. Which will be the final part of this wonderful trip.

Beautiful Iona, Lunga, Staffa & Mull Summer 2019
Come aboard for a short trip around the beautiful Scottish Inner Hebridean islands of Iona, Lunga, Staffa and Mull, accompanied by some carefully chosen music! The islands are even more stunning when the sun shines, as it did in June 2019! We started in Oban on the mainland, got a ferry to Mull and then drove across the single track road to Fionnport for the ferry to Iona. This tiny island is the crucible of Christianity in Britain. You can walk to St. Columba's bay where the saint landed in the 6th century and visit the rebuilt abbey. After the day trippers have gone you have Iona all to yourself, with stunning sunsets on the West coast and beautiful walks and beaches. You can also sail from there on the ketch 'Birthe Marie' with skipper Mark Jardine. We went along the Burg coastline of Mull and landed on tiny Inch Kenneth. A visit to Lunga and Staffa is a must-do, with their Puffins, spectacular bird colonies and amazing rock formations. Mull is blessed with superb scenery, wildlife, beaches and quirky places to eat and relax, with narrow roads that circle the island and show you the best. And you can climb Ben More, Mull's only Munro with views that make the slog worthwhile! If you want to fly yourself to Mull there is an airfield at the Glenforsa Hotel on the East side where 'air traffic control' is behind the bar and you can watch the planes while you eat!

Scotland's SECRET Island Escape / Isle of Iona.
Iona is a small island in the Inner Hebrides off the Ross of Mull on the western coast of Scotland. It is mainly known for Iona Abbey, though there are other buildings on the island.
Iona is thought to be the first Christian site in Scotland. As such, this tiny island (1 mile wide, 3.5 miles long), now in the care of the National Trust for Scotland.
The tiny island of Iona sits off the west coast of the Isle of Mull in the historic Highlands of Scotland. This small isle, just three miles long by one mile wide, had a huge influence on the establishment of Christianity in Scotland, England and throughout mainland Europe.
Travel to Iona is by two ferries to : mainland to the Isle of Mull (via Oban/Craignure, or Lochaline/Fishnish or Kilchoan/Tobermory) and then from Fionnphort to Iona. The ferry point for Iona is at Fionnphort on the Isle of Mull and is a 4 minute ride across the Sound of Iona.

Camping A Night on Isle of Iona | Travel Diaries
In August 2016, I took a spontaneous trip to Europe with my best friend Autumn. We hit Ireland, Scotland and England. You are watching the Scotland vlog.
Scotland was probably my favorite country just because of the weather(if you are from Texas then you can relate).
We got to stay a night on the Isle of Iona and spend the rest of our time in Edinburgh. My favorite was the Isle of Iona because it was away from the city and far from much civilization. We had no access to internet nor did we have a roof over our heads because we camped under a tent. Yes, it started raining and I was freezing half the night. Would I do it again? No.
Do I miss it? Yes.
It was probably a pretty memorable experience. Especially because of the cows and sheep that kept us up all night and I killed a spider in my tent after screaming for 5 straight minutes.
All in all, Scotland was breathtaking and the people were super duper friendly. I had one guy bumped into me but apologized and asked me if I was alright. He didn't walk away until I nodded to him that I was ok.*awwww
Looking back on this vlog brings me great joy and memories as I hope it will to you. I definitely encourage anyone to travel at least once in their lifetime. It is so necessary because it gives you perspective and makes you more culturally diversed as an individial which only leads to more knowlege and better conversations!
Thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to watch this vlog. I truly do appreciate it if you have made it this far into reading.

6.Tag in Schottland 2018 InselTrip nach Mull, Lunga, Staffa und Iona mit Staffatours
Unser 6.
