Cathair na Stéige, Staigue Fort - Part 1
One of the finest examples of a stone fort in Ireland, Staigue Fort or as it is known in Gaelic Cathair Na Stéige in Castlecove County Kerry, is about 2,500 years old. It is in excellent condition and is thought to have been built in the first century BC. Little is know about its builders or indeed what it was used for. Perhaps it may have been built for religious reasons or to protect cattle. It may also have been an amphitheatre intended for some spectacle, a place to secure stock at night, an observatory, a symbol of wealth and status, or a place of defence and security. It is built of stone common to the Castlecove district and is almost circular, measuring 27m in diameter. The wall is almost 4 metres thick at the base and 2 metres thick at the top. The north side is still perfectly preserved with some of the old coping stones still in position. The wall is 5.5 metres high on the north and west sides. It has a square headed doorway and inside are two small chambers, one on the west side and the other on the north. The stairways, which are probably the most interesting feature of the fort, run inside the wall almost to the full height of the wall, and these stairs lead to narrow platforms on which the fort's defenders stood.

Staigue Ring Fort: The Hidden Gem of Ireland
While driving up the Ring of Kerry, we took about an hour long detour up the mountains to see the ancient Staigue Ring fort. This fort was built thousands of years ago and still stands strong today. It's right in the middle of a valley, hidden from view to anyone who doesn't know it's there.
Not many people know about the Staigue Fort, and that was one of the main reasons we wanted to see it. There is no one monitoring it (it's on private land), so you can walk right up and climb on it, explore inside it, etc. It's incredibly sturdy with walls that are 8 feet thick.
If you are planning to drive along the ring of Kerry, you should definitely plan to see the Staigue Fort! In our opinion, it was one of the coolest things we saw our entire trip. Plus the scenery driving to it is amazing as well!

Ring Fort - Staigue Fort
Part of the Ring of Kerry drive. The fort is probably Celtic in origin, dating back to the first century BC. No mortar was used in the fort and the wall is up to 5.5m (18ft) high and 4m (13ft) thick, surrounding a circular area of 27.4m (90ft) in diameter. Inside the wall are two small chambers about 2.1m (7ft) high, oval in shape and waterproof, with a corbelled roof. The interior of the fort is reached through a 1.8m (6ft) high passage roofed with enormous double lintels.

apparently i behave too much like a hyperactive child to be able to film properly and also, you know i've never been good computers ergo the video editing skills are lacking. HOWEVER, these are happy happy memories :D
you may or may not want to skip over the music-y bit to find Paul running at the end. :D
