Stainmore Railway Company - Kirkby Stephen East Station
In between watching LNER A4 60009 'Union of South Africa' and LMS Jubilee 45690 'Leander' at Kirkby Stephen railway station on the late afternoon of Saturday 11th August 2018, I went down the road and had a quick look at the Stainmore Railway and the former Kirkby Stephen East station.
Among the exhibits, I saw - a must for any respectable station - 'Quaker' the station cat!

Kirkby Stephen Railway was closed to passengers in 1962 and freight in 1974. The site was purchased by Stainmore properties LTD after it had been used as a bobbin factory and Stainmore Railway Company volunteers have worked over the years to develop a Heritage Center and an operational railway which welcomes visitors at weekends.flying at 166 ft.

A Visit To The Stainmore Railway Company at Kirkby Stephen East 7/08/2016
Special thanks to Tring's Trains Productions for allowing me to access the lineside for the final shot and showing me around the site. Link to his channel is here:
Apologies for the short video again. The wind was extremely strong affecting both the sound and the shots themselves. I decided to add music to the shots so that the mood and atmosphere was still positive despite the weather
The Stainmore Railway Company bought the then then derelict station at Kirkby Stephen East, which had be turned into a bobbin factory, in 1997. Since then the station has been restored to its former glory and trains started running again in 2011 on a half mile section of track.
There's still a lot of work to be done including a new water tower and the construction of a new running line and new loco depot.
I really hope that in 10 years time the railway would have done all of this and opened a few miles of track. Definitely worth a visit.
Hope you enjoy!

Kirkby Stephen is a civil parish and small market town in Cumbria, in North West England which historically, is part of Westmorland. The town is located on the A685, surrounded by sparsely populated hill country, and about 25 miles (40 km) from the nearest larger towns, Kendal and Penrith. The River Eden rises 6 miles (9.7 km) away in the peat bogs below Hugh Seat and passes by, almost unobserved, on the eastern edge of the town.
Kirkby Stephen has a parish council and is a centre for several smaller villages and parishes in the surrounding area, including Nateby, Ravenstonedale and Mallerstang. A community and council centre in the library, provides information and services on behalf of all the local councils (county, district and parish), and general and local information and facilities.
Kirkby Stephen serves as a base for tourism in the Upper Eden Valley area and for walking tours of the Valley. It is on the line of the Coast to Coast Walk, devised by Alfred Wainwright, Each June there is the Mallerstang Horseshoe and Nine Standards Yomp which takes a strenuous route along the high ground along both sides of the neighbouring dale of Mallerstang, including Wild Boar Fell and the summit of nearby Nine Standards Rigg. The surrounding countryside attracts walkers but the Kirkby Stephen Mountain Rescue Team sometimes has to assist those who are not fully prepared for harsh conditions on the fell tops.
It is sometimes said that Faraday Road (parallel with High Street and Market Street) is named in honour of the scientist, Michael Faraday (1791–1867) but it is named after his uncle, Richard Faraday, who was a respected local tradesman. Richard's younger brother, James, was for some time the blacksmith in Outhgill, but his third child, Michael, was born soon after they had moved to London. The Faraday brothers moved from Clapham in the West Riding to the Kirkby Stephen area because the family were all members of the Sandemanian sect, and at that time there was locally one of the few Sandemanian communities with a chapel, which was in the courtyard behind what is now the HSBC bank.
Stenkrith Park is south of the town on the B6259 road to Nateby. The river scenery here marks the change from limestone at the head of the Eden Valley in Mallerstang, to the red sandstone which is characteristic further along the Eden Valley. The main rock, from which most houses in Kirkby Stephen is built, is brockram, composed of fragments of limestone in a cement of red sandstone. The river at Stenkrith has carved this rock into many fantastic shapes, collectively known as the Devil's Grinding Mill or Devil's Hole. This spectacular natural scenery has been supplemented, in recent years, by three (human) additions. The ‘Poetry Path' has 12 stones which were carved by the artist Pip Hall, with poems by Meg Peacock, depicting a year in the life of a hill farmer.
Eden Benchmarks: Beside the river there is a sculpture by Laura White, entitled ‘Passage', one of the ten Eden Benchmarks, a series of sculptures that have been placed at intervals along the River Eden from its source in Mallerstang to the Solway Firth. The Millennium Bridge was opened in 2002, and provides pedestrian access from the park to a walk along the old south Durham railway track.
Kirkby Stephen West station, on the Settle-Carlisle Line, is located over 1 mile (2 km) south west of the town. This railway line kept to the high ground and avoided descending into the valleys wherever possible. A second, older, railway station is also situated in the village. This is Kirkby Stephen East station, situated at the southern edge of the village. Originally a large junction of the South Durham & Lancashire Union Railway and the Eden Valley Railway, the station was re-opened by the Stainmore Railway Company in August 2011 as a heritage centre and operational railway representing the 1950's, and is open to visitors every weekend.

NER Stores Van No.5523 goes undercover at Kirkby Stephen East
18th August 2018 marked a momentous occasion supporters of the Locomotive Conservation & Learning Trust (LCLT), as the trust's NER 1902 Bogie Stores Van was moved into the newly constructed running & restoration facility at Kirkby Stephen East.
NER’s Diagram ‘H2’ bogie stores van was built at York in 1902 for carrying stores and locomotive spares from works to depots. Later renumbered by BR Gateshead Depot as DE 903004
(a departmental number) the vehicle was acquired by Beamish from Winston Station in December 1973.
In 1986 the van was damaged in an arson attack, though has remained in secure undercover storage for the last six years. A notable feature is the ‘birdcage’ observation ducket mounted centrally on the roof, enabling the guard to view the train along its length from a safely enclosed position. This feature remains and will be restored.
LCLT’s intention is to restore No. 5523 to running order and to an externally authentic condition. However, as the interior has been gutted, this will be used to provide a venue for an exhibition, and educational facilities. The van will be made available to travel with NER C class No.876 (BR 65033).
This movement marked the first steps towards full restoration of this unique vehicle, which almost certainly have visited KSE on a number of occasions during its working life, will be restored to full working condition in conjunction with No.876, thanks to a near £1m lottery grant.
Stainmore Railway Company 2018
Sunday the 26th August marked newly arrived Peckett No.2111 Lytham St. Anne's penultimate day in steam for 2018 season at Stainmore Railway Company (Kirkby Stephen East).
The first few shots show the various shunting manoeuvres needed at the start of every operating day. These are followed by the scheduled passenger carrying services (some of which were nearly full). Finally, we have an interesting driver's eye view of the 1/4 mile run, showing just how much the site has changed over the past couple of years.
No.2111 was built by Peckett & Sons in 1949 and was used at Blackpool Gassworks where it was noted as No 1 Lytham St Annes.
When it finished its industrial service it was preserved privately by J Morris of Lytham St Annes and was exhibited in his Motive Power Museum at Lytham St Annes.
In 1984 the locomotive was put up for sale and the Redditch Railway Society sought to buy it but before the necessary funds could be raised a Peak Rail member bought it.
In 1990 the locomotive moved to the Midland Railway Centre at Buttery where it ran until 1996. It was then restored and returned to service again in April 2017.
In June 2018 the locomotive moved to the Stainmore Railway on a 12-month loan, eventually heading back to the Midland Railway Centre at Butterly.

Kirkby Stephen 1993
Over a period of three weeks in February/March 1993 British Rail ran a twice daily weekdays only service between Kirkby Stephen and Carlisle for steamcrew training purposes. A flat-fare of £10 was charged and when I made my trip on 10th March 1993 the three passenger coaches were so crowded that many of us had to be accommodated in the support coach.
