Lulworth Cove and Stair Hole Part of the Jurassic Coast of England
Lulworth Cove is a cove near the village of West Lulworth, on the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site in Dorset, southern England. The cove is one of the world's finest examples of such a landform, and is a tourist location with approximately 500,000 visitors a year, of whom about 30% visit in July and August.
Stair Hole, less than half a mile away, is an infant cove which suggests what Lulworth Cove would have looked like a few hundred thousand years ago. The sea has made a gap in the Portland and Purbeck limestone here, as well as a small arch. The sea has made its way through to the Wealdon clays and begun eroding them. The clay shows obvious signs of slumping, and is eroding very rapidly. Stair Hole shows one of the best examples of limestone folding (the Lulworth crumple) in the world, caused by movements in the Earth's crust (tectonics) millions of years ago.

Dorset's Jurassic Coast - Lulworth Cove and Stair Hole
More explorations along Dorset's Jurassic Coast. Today, Dave Ford and I are visiting Lulworth Cove, one of the iconic beauty spots on the South Coast.
Dave and I managed to get down to the tourist trap early before the hoards arrived to see what it is like when in its nature state.

Jurassic Series - Lulworth Cove and Stair Hole
Lulworth Cove is one of the finest coves in the World and the Stair Hole 'Crumble' is one of the best examples of limestone folding in the world too. It is one of the wonders of the south coast and a very special place in the geology of the Jurassic coastline.

Places to see in ( West Lulworth - UK )
West Lulworth is a village and civil parish in the Purbeck district of Dorset, England, situated on the English Channel beside Lulworth Cove. n the 2011 census the civil parish—which includes most of Lulworth Camp army base—had 291 households and a population of 714. The village is a gateway to the Jurassic Coast world heritage site and is a popular tourist destination, especially for day trips.
In 1086 in the Domesday Book West Lulworth was not distinguished from neighbouring East Lulworth; only one settlement was recorded, called Luluorde, Luluworde or Loloworde. It had 38.3 households, was in Winfrith Hundred and the lord and tenant-in-chief was Aiulf the chamberlain. Despite this, East and West Lulworth may have been separate settlements at this time, and definitely were so by the end of the 13th century.
The Castle Inn is one of the oldest pubs in Dorset, dating from the 16th century. Holy Trinity parish church was originally in the village centre, but was demolished in 1869 although the old churchyard still remains. The present church, built of local stone taken from the cove, replaced it. It was largely financed by the then incumbent Rev. William Gildea, brother of philanthropist Sir James Gidea.
From the late seventeenth to the mid nineteenth century smugglers used Lulworth Cove and other bays and beaches nearby. The building of coastguard cottages, which housed the customs officers still stand above the cove. Lulworth at one point had a mill, powered by water from a nearby spring. It was burnt down during the 19th century and all that remains of its existence is the millpond.
West Lulworth civil parish covers 2,593 acres (1,049 ha). The underlying geology is mostly chalk, with a strip of Portland limestone along the coast. At Lulworth Cove the sea has breached the limestone and eroded the soft Wealden Beds behind, resulting in the circular shape of the cove.
West Lulworth village is dominated by two hills: to the east is Bindon Hill, a 170m high ridge, which has extensive remains of Iron Age earthworks. To the west is Hambury Tout, which has a barrow on its rounded top.
West Lulworth village is about half a mile north of Lulworth Cove, a picturesque, sheltered bay enclosed almost in a circle. The natural limestone arch of Durdle Door is half a mile west along the coast from Lulworth Cove.
( West Lulworth - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting West Lulworth . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in West Lulworth - UK

Lulworth cove and stair hole
Stair Hole is just to the west of Lulworth Cove in Dorset
Stair Hole is a cove that is forming just to the west of Lulworth Cove in Dorset, southern England. In a few hundred thousand years it may be as large as nearby Lulworth Cove. The folded limestone strata known as the Lulworth crumple are particularly visible at Stair Hole. There are several caves visible from the seaward side of Stair Hole; Cathedral Cavern is supported by pillars of rock rising out of the water.[1] It was created by an earthquake which pushed the rocks upwards creating the slanting effect.

Coasteering at Lulworth: rock hopping and shore scrambling offers no shortage of thrills and spills in experiencing all that this majestic coastline has to offer. During your visit you may jump, swim, climb and traverse through millions of years of earth’s history. It’s a fully immersive, Jurassic experience for adults and children alike and one that you’ll remember for a long time to come.
Come, Discover! Jurassic Coast Trails and Trips!
Walking the South West Coast Path at Durdle Door offers spectacular views across the Jurassic Coast.
Around 25 million years ago the African tectonic plate collided with the European plate. The huge pressures generated heaved and folded rocks to create the mountain chain we know as the Alps.
Ripples from that collision spread north through the Earth’s crust and gently folded the rocks here, in what would become south Dorset and Purbeck.
Walking the coast path to the east of Durdle Door brings you to the famous Lulworth Cove and Stair Hole. Further afield are the incredible geological formations of Worbarrow Bay and the eerie abandoned village of Tyneham.
To the west are the coastal hamlets of Osmington Mills and Ringstead.
Eroded by time and nature, Durdle Door is one of Dorset’s most photographed and iconic landmarks.
The coastline is of such international geological importance that it was designated England’s first natural World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2001 and is now part of a family of natural wonders including America’s Grand Canyon and Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.
Due to gradient of cliff the steps are steep in places.
Man O' War is a very popular beach of sand and fine pebbles on the east side of Durdle Door beach. The Man O' War and the Door shelter the beaches, providing safe seas for gentle swimming and paddling.
This section of coastline, including Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door are part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, which starts at Studland in Dorset and ends at Exmouth in Devon.
The final descent to the beach and bay is steep and is not suitable for those with disabilities.
This fantastic section of the South West Coast Path crosses a diverse landscape from the rugged rocks of Portland, to the hustle and bustle of urban life in the seaside resort of Weymouth, followed by quiet rural paths leading to high, undulating chalk cliffs on the way to Lulworth Cove.
Walking becomes progressively harder as you leave Weymouth and set off along the impressive cliffs of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. As you approach Lulworth be sure to look back to the high cliffs of White Nothe and Weymouth Bay and Portland beyond.
This perfect limestone archway is undoubtedly one of the most well known and well photographed points of the entire South West Coast Path.
The beautiful horseshoe bay of Lulworth Cove. Just east of Lulworth is Stair Hole where the sea is washing away the limestone to form a cove in probably the exact same way as it did at Lulworth millions of years ago. From here you can also see the extraordinary folds of rock known as the Lulworth Crumple.
Whether you’re just visiting for the day or staying for a week or longer, you’ll find so many incredible things to do in Dorset, it will make your visit live long in the memory.
Whatever inspires you, we have it covered!
