The staircase or stairway to the moon is a natural phenomenon that occurs between March and October on Roebuck Bay, Broome. During three following days the full moon rises over the mudflats created by an extreme low tide and the reflections lead to the illusion of a stairway to the moon.

We made a short time lapse movie to capture the phenomenon in its full length. We took two pictures a second over a period of 25 minutes to create the video. At the end you can see the extreme tide rushing in.

I was lucky enough to see this tonight. There was a large crowd of people watching and taking photographs.

Video was made in 4K mode with a Nikon B700 on a Skywatcher Tracking mount.

The Staircase to the Moon is a natural phenomenon caused by the rising of a full moon reflecting off the exposed mudflats in Roebuck Bay at extremely low tide, to create a beautiful optical illusion of a stairway reaching to the moon. This spectacular sight occurs from March through to November.
