RUSSIA: STALIN'S FORMER HOLIDAY HOME TURNED INTO TOURIST ATTRACTION
Russian/Nat
One of the Soviet Union's most feared leaders - Stalin - has been turned into a tourist attraction in modern day Russia.
The former Communist dictator's holiday home on the Black Sea has been opened up as a hotel and museum.
Despite Stalin's reputation as a mass murderer his dacha is very popular with Russian holidaymakers and fully booked.
High above Sochi's Black Sea coast, hidden among the trees Stalin's former holiday home has been carefully renovated for its first season as a tourist attraction.
It may be an odd holiday location but is proving very popular with the Russians.
Visitors can take tea in the sitting room with a wax image of the man who sent millions to their death in labour camps.
Or they can reminisce over black and white photos or even have their picture taken next to one of history's most infamous tyrants.
Many who've slept in the hotel claimed to have heard Stalin's footsteps - it's all part of the experience.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
I have the sensation a link with the past. The past and the present meet here. It's as if he's standing next to us and looking at us. I think he's a great person and his great spirit continues to live here. I've asked the guard if his ghost is here.
SUPERCAPTION: Tamara, holidaymaker
The dacha has been divided up into 11 apartments including one containing the Man of Steel's' private sitting room and bedroom.
In these rooms he entertained the Chinese leader Mao Zedong, who presented him with the stationary set which still stands on Stalin's desk.
The hotel also contains a restaurant where diners can sample Stalin's favourite Georgian dishes.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
You feel that a great person lived in this place - when you're one of the masses you're a nobody but here you feel that you're a special and great person.
SUPERCAPTION: diner
Visitors can also play billiards at the same table used by Stalin and his cronies.
Until 1991 the dacha belonged to the state and was then handed over to the local co- operative who privatised it.
The most expensive room costs more than 200 U-S dollars a night although Stalin's modest bedroom is only about 150 dollars.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
Now we have a lot of people who want to come and holiday here because they want to vacation where our former leaders used to come and they're mainly interested in its authenticity. For example Stalin's study, his bedroom and where he ate and where he took the cure, where he walked - all of this we've preserved. This year we are practically full up with bookings - 100 per cent.
SUPERCAPTION : Vladimir Shishkin, Director Stalin's Dacha
The dacha is in great demand with Russian pop stars and even politicians - General Pavel Grachev, the former defence minister has vacationed here.

25 Joseph Stalin - Patient Stalin. The Kremlin, a history in diseases
The veil over the medical history of the most dangerous patient for the treating doctors in the history of mankind rises. Was Voroshilov an English spy, or was the Boss a paranoid? Why did the famous professor Vinogradov visit Stalin in 1936?
Why there was a Doctors' Deed, which almost became the beginning of the Third World War? A little more time ... and outstanding physicians had to be executed with eastern brutality by hanging in the central squares of the country's largest cities ... Is that why Comrade Stalin died so suddenly?

Moscow Out: Stalin's Moscow
On Moscow Out this week, Martyn Andrews looks at various monuments, art work, buildings and Kremlin secrets associated with Joseph Stalin. There are hundreds of interesting facts and figures surrounding the soviet leader -- in the late 1950s, for example, his body was removed from its open position next to Lenin on Red Square and buried next to the walls of the Kremlin, where he rests to this day. What is the modern-day opinion of Stalin's reign of terror? And how does his vision continue to affect cultural life in Moscow today? Watch to find out.

Fox Criticized For Light-Hearted Joseph Stalin Segment
Those with knowledge on the subject of World History are once again irate with Fox.
Business Insider reports that a segment aired during the World Cup is upsetting many viewers.
On Monday Fox Sports 1 toured Joseph Stalin's vacation house, or dacha.
Many condemn the segment for being too light-hearted about the former Soviet dictator.
Reporter Sergey Gordeev hosted the 2 1/2 minute segment, produced by National Geographic
He played on Stalin's old pool table and entered his office, where a life-like replica of Stalin sat.
Think what you will about Joseph Stalin, but there's no denying this was one of the most formidable figures in human history.
Criticism of the segment was also voiced by other news outlets.
It's hard to have a conversation about Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin without using the word 'murderer.' During his 30 years in power, he had hundreds of thousands of people executed while millions of others died in gulags or from famine. But during its World Cup coverage on Monday, Fox found a way to talk about Stalin and leave out all that murder and repression stuff. Yahoo News

This controversial documentary created a storm in Russia by taking off the cloak from a violent, repressive era of Soviet history. Filmmaker Semyon Aranovich found the last surviving personal bodyguard of Josef Stalin, who began working for him in the 1930s. I WAS STALIN S BODYGUARD weaves together unprecedented, first-hand testimony with rare footage, including Stalin's home movies. What emerges is a singular portrait of a violent and complex era during which Stalin consolidated his power through brutal repression, yet led the Soviet Union to victory in World War II.

SUMMARY
=======
Russia (Russian: Росси́я, tr. Rossiya, IPA: [rɐˈsʲijə]), officially the Russian Federation (Russian: Росси́йская Федера́ция, tr. Rossiyskaya Federatsiya, IPA: [rɐˈsʲijskəjə fʲɪdʲɪˈratsɨjə]), is a country in Eurasia. At 17,125,200 square kilometres (6,612,100 sq mi), Russia is the largest country in the world by area, covering more than one-eighth of the Earth's inhabited land area, and the ninth most populous, with about 144.5 million people as of 2018, excluding Crimea. About 77% of the population live in the western, European part of the country. Russia's capital, Moscow, is the largest metropolitan area in Europe proper and one of the largest cities in the world; other major cities include Saint Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg and Nizhny Novgorod. Extending across the entirety of Northern Asia and much of Eastern Europe, Russia spans eleven time zones and incorporates a wide range of environments and landforms. From northwest to southeast, Russia shares land borders with Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland (both with Kaliningrad Oblast), Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, China, Mongolia and North Korea. It shares maritime borders with Japan by the Sea of Okhotsk and the U.S. state of Alaska across the Bering Strait. However, Russia recognises two more countries that border it, Abkhazia and South Ossetia, both of which are internationally recognized as parts of Georgia.
The East Slavs emerged as a recognizable group in Europe between the 3rd and 8th centuries AD. Founded and ruled by a Varangian warrior elite and their descendants, the medieval state of Rus arose in the 9th century. In 988 it adopted Orthodox Christianity from the Byzantine Empire, beginning the synthesis of Byzantine and Slavic cultures that defined Russian culture for the next millennium. Rus' ultimately disintegrated into a number of smaller states; most of the Rus' lands were overrun by the Mongol invasion and became tributaries of the nomadic Golden Horde in the 13th century. The Grand Duchy of Moscow gradually reunified the surrounding Russian principalities, achieved independence from the Golden Horde. By the 18th century, the nation had greatly expanded through conquest, annexation, and exploration to become the Russian Empire, which was the third largest empire in history, stretching from Poland on the west to Alaska on th ...
