UNDERGROUND TRAIN: Kiev Metro (Метро Киев) / Railway Vehicles - Trains and Subways
The Kiev Metro, or Kyiv Metro (Ukrainian: Ки́ївський метрополіте́н, translit. Kyjivskyj metropoliten, IPA: [ˈkɪjiu̯sʲkej metropolʲiˈtɛn]) is a metro system that is the mainstay of Kiev's public transport. It was the first rapid transit system in Ukraine and the third one built in the Soviet Union (after Moscow and St Petersburg Metros). It has three lines with a total length of 67.56 kilometers (41.98 mi) and 52 stations. The system carries 1.331 million passengers daily (2015), accounting for 46.7% of Kiev's public transport load (as of 2014). In 2016, the metro carried 484.56 million passengers. The deepest station in the world, Arsenalna (at 105.5 m or 346.1 ft), is found on the system.
The metro follows a standard Soviet triangle three line, six radii layout that intersects in the centre where the stations are built very deep underground and could potentially double as bomb shelters.
There are now 52 stations. There are 20 deep-lying stations, of which 17 are of pylon type (including the only London style station in the former USSR that exists today - Arsenalna) and 3 of column type. Of the 26 sub-surface stations, 13 stations are of pillar-trispan type, three are side-platform pillar bi-spans, 8 more are single-vaults, and further three are asymmetrical double deck bi-spans.[citation needed] In addition, 6 stations are located above ground, of which four are surface level, and two are flyover. Most of the stations have large vestibules, some on surface level whilst others are underground interlinked with subways. Access for disabled persons, previously overlooked, has become an important issue, and all new stations have been constructed with necessary provisions.
Arsenalna station is as well unique since it is the deepest station in the world (105.5 m, considering the distance between the surface above the station and the station itself). The next station, proceeding towards Dnieper, Dnipro, is overground, which makes the Dnipro-Arsenalna tunnel the one which makes across the highest elevation difference in the world, considering surface's relative height.
Line 1 (Sviatoshynsko-Brovarska)
All of the stations on the eastern bank of the Dnieper river are either ground or above ground level, this attributed to a similar experiment like Moscow's Filyovskaya Line. The milder Ukrainian climate, however, prevented the stations there from being severely deteriorated, which was why extensions in 1968 and 1979 were kept from going underground. The five original stations managed to survive Nikita Khrushchev's struggle with decorative extras, although more pompeous projects were proposed in Stalin's times. The 5 stations are recognised as architectural monuments and thus are protected by state. The red line (as signed on maps) is the busiest and carries 557.9K passengers daily (2015).
Line 2 (Kurenivsko-Chervonoarmiyska)
The 20.95 km (13.02 mi) Kurenivsko-Chervonoarmiyska Line, is the second line of the Kiev Metro, first opened in 1976. Initially, it extends southwards along the right bank of the Dnieper river, but starts deviating from the river towards the southwest from Lybidska station on. Most of the stations were built in the 1970s and 1980s, architecturally the line shows some of the best examples of late-Soviet architectural features (with Lybidska station being an architectural monument protected by the state), while the newest ones, built in 2010-2013, are a good example of modern stations with some national decoration motifs (Teremky station) with access for disabled. The blue line carries 460.9 thousand passengers daily.Universytet station's vestibule is recognised as an outstanding architectural monument of Kiev. Slavutych metro station of Syretsko-Pecherska Line.
Line 3 (Syretsko-Pecherska)
The longest line in the Kyiv Metro (23.9 km (14.9 mi)), Syretsko-Pecherska Line is the third line of the Kiev Metro, first opened in 1989. It is a major northwest-southeast axis of the Kyiv rapid transit system. It starts on the right-bank side of Dnieper River before crossing it on a partially covered bridge and then going on the southeastern residential districts of Kyiv. The line is one of the newest and shows some post-independence decorative motifs. Technically, it is also a great development, with most of the platforms longer and wider than older sections and with some stations having provision for disabled access. The line features a planned station and two formally under construction (actually construction suspended), which is partly the reason for its extremely long distances between some stations (Vydubychi-Slavutych tunnel is the longest in the Kyiv Metro, as 3.046 km (1.893 mi) separate the two stations). This line is coloured green on maps.
THE BEAUTIFUL MOSCOW METRO
Welcome to the most beautiful and most accessible museum in Moscow - the Metro. The Moscow Metro is one of the busiest underground systems in the world with a daily ridership of over 9 million people. The Moscow Metro is the world record-holder for on-time departures and arrivals. According to the Moscow transport department, its accuracy is 99.99 percent and the average train during rush hour is every 90 seconds. The metro is so beautiful that 44 of the nearly 200 stations are listed as cultural heritage sites. During World War Two, the Moscow metro became bomb-proof shelters, like in London. Half a million people found shelter underground, and people slept in the carriages of trains that were parked overnight in stations. When airstrikes were especially frequent, there were shops and hairdressing salons in operation at the stations, and for example the Kurskaya metro station had a working library. There is a legend concerning the appearance of the circle line, which wasn’t originally planned. The myth states that during a meeting, Stalin put his cup of coffee on the metro map leaving a brown circle around the city center. Stalin showed the circle to the builders and ordered the construction of such a line. This is why the line is brown. Around 26 metro stations were renamed after the collapse of the Soviet Union as well as names of streets, squares and avenues around the city. Main reason for that was, of course, letting go of the Communist past. Like the Oyster card in London or the Octopus card in Hong Kong, Moscow has the Troika Card. The Troika is a contactless reusable card designed to pay for public transport in Moscow. Passengers using the Troika card can pay for their trips by bus, trolleybus, or tram for 31 rubles and the Moscow Metro for 32 rubles. It's also possible to get unlimited cards, like mine which is 5000 rubles for 3 months. If you’re using the metro in moscow, I highly recommend the yandex metro app. It is an interactive metro map of Moscow which calculates your time and route. To help those who are visually impaired, as well as people just lost, the metro announcers voice changes. On a journey towards the centre, a man’s voice is used. While going away, a woman’s. As always, thanks for watching, and please subscribe to my channel for more information about Moscow!

Deep escalator down to a subway station in Moscow, Russia
With about 180 subway stations throughout Moscow, Russia I can't remember which one this is because I was on so many of them! Nevertheless, the extensive subway systems throughout Russia are one of the few things Joseph Stalin can be thanked for. In 2011, for about one U.S. Dollar, I could go to one of any of the 180 stations throughout Moscow. Millions of travelers use Moscow's subway system each day and I, myself, found it very convenient as well.

1938 VISIT TO SOVIET UNION / SOVIET RUSSIA AMERICAN TOURIST HOME MOVIE KIEV KHARKOV MOSCOW 65084
Filmed by an unknown American tourist, this silent home movie shows a visit to Soviet Russia after twenty years. Presumably this means 20 years after the Revolution, or 1938. The film is notable because it presents a propaganda free look at life in the USSR just a few years before the outbreak of WWII, and during some of the worst purges in Soviet history.
At :28 views of Kiev are seen including the old monastery at 1:01. At 2:08 Sports Day Parade is shown in the city with many floats including one at 2:35 showing Stalin. Men and women march by in athletic uniforms. At 3:48 a peculiar float rides by adorned with images of party officials. At 4:00 the Kiev stadium is shown for the Athletic Day events.
At 5:45 an outdoor concert rehearsal is seen and at 6:30 a farming collective is shown. At 6:53 what might be beehives are seen. At 7:00 private plots of land are shown as well as houses. At 7:30 a mother or babushka poses with an infant. Kids are seen at 7:40, their heads covered with scarves. At 8:10 cattle are shown roaming on the farm. At 8:30 old and new methods of farming are seen with a modern harvester at 8:55. At 9:47 a Pioneer Palace is shown at Kharkov and at 9:55 a Ford bus carrying kids to a Pioneer Camp. The Young Pioneer camp (Russian: Пионерский лагерь) was the name for the vacation or summer camp of Young Pioneers. In the 20th century these camps existed in many socialist countries, particularly in the Soviet Union. The Young Pioneer camps of the Soviet Union were the place of vacation for children from the Young Pioneer organization of the Soviet Union during summer and winter holidays.
At 10:46 a sanatorium or fresh air camp is shown.
At 11:20 a modern hospital at Kharkov is seen including a patient undergoing a procedure and staff.
At 11:53 an illuminated map of Spain, which was at that time undergoing a civil war, is seen on the wall of a building.
At 12:15 Gorki Park, Moscow is shown with its entrance bedecked with an image of Stalin. At 12:30 the entrance to the zoo is seen. At 12:50 a parachute tower and amateur acrobatics are shown. The tower was built in the early 1930s and was the most expensive rides in the park (1 Ruble as opposed to 10 Kopecks to enter the park). It was 35 meters high and the jump was imitated using a special rope system, slowing down the fall. But still, it was thrilling. The tower was used in WWII as a watchtower and eventually removed in the 1950s as it had started to disintegrate.
At 13:30 a high wire type acrobatic act is shown in the park.
At 14:15 the film shows airplanes on display at some kind of special exhibit.
At 14:42 a wild amusement ride is shown with a man flying on a pendulum of some sort. At 15:20 the boulevard along Gorky Park is shown.

Photographer Documents Disappearing Soviet Mosaics in Ukraine
Photographer Yevhen Nikiforov travelled around Ukraine for three years in search of mosaics from the 1950s to 1980s, the period of Soviet modernism. During this time he visited 109 towns and villages, where he found more than 1000 works. Some of them have already disappeared from public space as a result of Ukraine's so-called decommunization.
Ukraine began the official decommunization process in April 2015, with legislation outlawing communist and Soviet symbols.
The results of Yevhen's search were published in a book titled, Decommunized: Ukrainian Soviet Mosaics, a joint project of the Ukrainian publishing house Osnovy and Germany's DOM Publishers.
Hromadske spoke to photographer Yevhen Nikiforov and his publisher, architect Philipp Meuser, about finding the art works, mosaic art and the perception of art from the Soviet period.

Pro-Russian rebels shoot down Ukrainian helicopters: Kiev
And turning to the deepening crisis in Ukraine.
Pro-Russian activists have taken over yet another government building, as Kiev launches a military crackdown to quell the rest.
Paul, can you tell us the latest developments?
What began as peaceful May Day celebrations quickly turned to violence in Ukraine's eastern city of Donetsk,... as riot police clashed with pro-Russian activists who seized the prosecutor's office.
The protesters now occupy a number of key government buildings in dozens of other flashpoint cities and are demanding a Crimea-style referendum be held by the end of next week.
The move comes as the Ukrainian government launches a military operation to retake the town of Slaviansk from separatist groups.
Ukraine's interior minister says one helicopter was shot down with missile launchers, and that at least one pilot was killed.
However, some rebels claim two helicopters were taken down and that another pilot was rescued.
There was another helicopter shot down. We tried to approach it, but then we decided to save at least one . You know, he was abandoned by his own people. They came up to him and just took the pistol.
Ukraine's acting president Olexander Turchynov has reinstated conscription amid the escalating unrest.
Kiev has accused Russia of financing and arming the separatists but Moscow has denied the allegations.
Russia's foreign ministry has warned that any assaults by Ukraine's troops in the region would have *quote catastrophic consequences.
