Hugh Bonneville and Jessica Hynes find a decent road as they travel to Stalin's birthplace, but the museum dedicated to the man leaves a sour taste in Hugh's mouth.

Joseph Stalin museum - Gori, Georgia
Joseph Stalin was born in Gori, Georgia, and here there’s a museum dedicated to his life. For most people he was a dictator but for some, he was a hero.
Stalin is most well known for his crimes, and there’s no denying that Stalin was responsible for some horrible atrocities. However, he also did a lot of good things. He turned the Soviet Union into a global superpower and also ended WW2.
The Stalin museum takes you through his life, from his youth to to his leadership of the USSR. He was born in 1878, as Ioseb Jughashvili, in Gori, Georgia (then, it was part of the Russian Empire) He changed his name and became interested in Marxism.
It was very interesting to learn about his life and to see his personal items, house, train carriage and many photo and statues. It’s well worth a visit and f you get the opportunity to go then I recommend taking a tour.

Stalin museum in Gori, Georgia
Gori is a town in eastern Georgia, with a population of 50,000. It is known as the birthplace of the Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, ballistic missile designer Alexander Nadiradze and philosopher Merab Mamardashvili. The city was occupied by Russian troops during the 2008 Russo–Georgian War. In the town's central square is located the Joseph Stalin Museum dedicated to the life of Joseph Stalin, the controversial leader of the Soviet Union. With the downfall of the Soviet Union the museum was closed in 1989, but reopened as proved a tourist attraction that brings money. In 2010 a banner was placed at the entrance stating: This museum is a falsification of history. It is a typical example of Soviet propaganda and it attempts to legitimize the bloodiest regime in history. However, as of 2017 the banner has been removed. The museum has three sections; Stalin's house, Stalin Museum and Stalin's personal railway carriage.
In the aftermath of the 2008 South Ossetia war, Georgia’s Minister of Culture Nikoloz Vacheishvili announced the Stalin museum would be reorganized into the Museum of Russian Aggression in the nearest future.

The Joseph Stalin Museum is a museum in Gori, Georgia dedicated to the life of Joseph Stalin, the leader of the Soviet Union, who was born in Gori. The Museum retains its Soviet-era characteristics.
Enshrined within a Greco-Italianate pavilion is a small wooden hut, in which Stalin was born in 1878 and spent his first four years. The small hut has two rooms on the ground floor. Stalin's father Vissarion Jughashvili, a local shoemaker, rented the one room on the left hand side of the building and maintained a workshop in the basement.
To one side of the museum is Stalin's personal railway carriage. The green Pullman carriage, which is armour plated and weighs 83 tons, was used by Stalin from 1941 onwards, including his attendances at the Yalta Conference and the Tehran Conference. It was sent to the museum on being recovered from the railway yards at Rostov-on-Don in 1985.

THE STALIN MUSEUM: WHY WE LEFT IMMEDIATELY (Uplistsikhe and Gori, Georgia)
1/10/19 - Gori and Uplistikhe, Georgia - We took a day trip from Tbilisi and visited the town of Gori, Stalin’s birthplace, not too far away. From here we went to a cave town that has thousands of years of history called Uplistikhe, which was fascinating. Back in Gori we walked through Stalin Park to the Stalin museum but after looking inside decided that we didn’t want to support it. We walked up to Gori Fortress instead to get a view over the surrounding areas and to the beautiful mountains in the north and finally headed back to Tbilisi.
Thank you so much for watching and please let me know what you thought of this vlog in the comments down below!

Georgia, a country at the intersection of Europe and Asia, is a former Soviet republic that’s home to Caucasus Mountain villages and Black Sea beaches. It’s famous for Vardzia, a sprawling cave monastery dating to the 12th century, and the ancient wine-growing region Kakheti. The capital, Tbilisi, is known for the diverse architecture and mazelike, cobblestone streets of its old town.

Stalin Museum - Gori - Georgia
Descrição
Stalin Museum, Gori, Georgia.
Stalin Museum, Gori, Georgia.
This is the city of Gori, a city of 47,000 people about 60 miles northwest of the Georgian capital Tbilisi. It is the dictator’s birthplace, home to the world’s largest Stalin museum, and one of the hottest tourist destination in the post-Soviet Republic of Georgia. Each year, hundreds of thousands of people travel here to visit this dystopian shrine.
The specter of Joseph Stalin haunts every inch of the room. Sculptures, portraits, and framed newspaper clippings of the moustached dictator populate the hallways. Stalin’s wood tobacco pipes, army caps, and military tunics collect dust under display cases.
The museum chronicles Stalin’s rise from poet and choirboy to revolutionary bank-robber—and his ascent to USSR overlord who, in the museum’s telling, rescued civilization from Adolf Hitler. But this rosy rags to riches Soviet fairytale is heavily redacted. There’s no mention of purges, Siberian death camps, forced collectivization, mass starvation, or any suggestion that Stalin was the cutthroat dictator who, historians assert, slaughtered millions.
