Stamford celebrates 50 years as country’s first Conservation Area
In this video, costume character John White acted as town crier to herald Stamford milestones.
Heritage partners and guests joined us last Friday evening (July 28) to celebrate Stamford’s conservation milestone as the UK’s first conservation area.
It’s exactly 50 years since the town collared that historic accolade, reputedly thanks to the town planner of the time whose work on local buildings and townscape positioned Stamford at the front of the queue.
Browne’s Hospital opened its doors to welcome guests including Historic England, Stamford Town Council, Stamford Civic Society and even operators of the first Collyweston slate mine to open for 50 years!
We have worked with partners to create a series of heritage-focussed Stamford 50 events over the summer and into the autumn, some in association with September’s Georgian festival.
In a passionate speech, Council Leader Cllr Matthew Lee emphasised the need to cherish and protect Stamford while ensuring it continues to meet the needs of families, visitors and businesses in our modern age.
He said: “Stamford is a vibrant thriving community. We want it to stay that way and not allow it to become a sleepy dormitory town, tempting though that may seem at times.
“We want generations of families to grow up here and for their children to stay here and work if they wish. That means ensuring that there are high quality, ideally highly skilled, jobs here in Stamford for our young people.”
Speaking at the event, Stamford Civic Society Chair Gwyneth Gibbs, traced formative elements of the town’s history and took the opportunity to thank SKDC for its positive working relationship, saying: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the planners in general and the Conservation and Enforcement Officers in particular, for the way they work with us and listen to us. Of course, there are occasions when their views and the Society's do not coincide, much as we would like them to agree with us 100% of the time!”

Snowy running tour round my local town, Stamford, Lincs, UK (2hrs north of London)
**[Skip to 6min 30secs if you get bored of the first bit of snowy trail!]**
Hello lovely followers of my channel all about trail running, today I thought I’d show you round the town where I live at the moment, Stamford in South Lincolnshire, UK.
It’s one of the prettiest, historic towns in England (especially with a covering of snow!) with its old Norman churches, quaint yellow stone buildings and intriguing alleyways.
Bear with me at the start of the video, I didn’t factor in how l far I’d need to run along the railway line first which is a bit of a samey for 5-10mins, but soon we get to some beautiful historical buildings.
Fancy a visit? Ask me a question in the comments below and I’ll do my best to help you out.
Do subscribe for more trail running advice and inspiration from me and all the elite athletes I have the great pleasure of interviewing.
Happy trails!
