Stamp Falls, Port Alberni B.C

Discover Alberni E04 - Stamp Falls 2018
At the very heart of Vancouver Island lies a truly magical place where one of this planets most spectacular migrations plays itself out every year. Stamp Falls Provincial Park, in the Alberni Valley, is both the beginning and the end of a migration that sees the Chinook Salmon swim thousands of kilometers, through countless trials and predators, to return to the very river in which they were born to spawn and then to die. This massive migration, of the largest salmon species on earth, attracts predators from land, water and air.
The waterfalls, which are Stamp Falls Provincial Park's namesake are a spectacle to behold any time of year. But in the fall season, you can watch the weary salmon try to jump the falls in their final push to their spawning grounds. It is not uncommon to witness the Vancouver Island black bear patrolling the shores of the falls fishing for salmon. But don't worry, as long as you respect this animal by giving it distance, it will remain uninterested in your presence. You're not on the menu, because it's favourite food is only an arm's reach away. At Stamp Falls, mankind has used its own ingenuity to help the heroic salmon, by building a fish ladder to bypass the worst of the white water. This fish ladder makes an incredible place to view these truly massive fish.
Locals and tourist alike know the Stamp River for another reasons – white water rafting, camping, hiking through an old growth Vancouver Island rain forest, and world class steelhead fishing outside the park boundaries.
The Stamp Long River Trail begins in the park and is perhaps the Alberni Valley most beautiful old growth hike, winding 7.5 km through the riparian zone on the east bank of the Stamp River.
With so much to see and do at Stamp Falls Provincial Park why not come for a visit, or better yet spend a few nights at the campground. You'll be glad you did.

Stamp River Provincial Park, British Columbia
This footage captures Stamp River Provincial Park during autumn in British Columbia, Canada.
Mid September at Stamp Falls on Vancouver Island
Sundreds, if not thousands of Chinook Salmon migrate up local river to their spawning beds every year. Here is an example of the scene below the falls waiting to jump up them or take the fish ladder.
Woman Rescued from Stamp River
NEAR PORT ALBERNI - A dramatic river rescue has been carried out near Port Alberni after a young woman became stranded in rushing waters.
The drama began to unfold just after 2pm yesterday. The woman was tubing down the river with two others when she took a wrong turn.
Currents were fast and strong. They knocked her off her tube and sent her plunging into the icy water.

Another tragedy on The Notorious Stamp River in Port Alberni
Port Alberni - One man is dead and two women lucky to be alive after a tubing accident on the Stamp Falls late Sunday afternoon.
The friends from Qualicum Beach unexpectedly found themselves in rushing rapids on the Stamp River near the Stamp River Provincial Park Campground in Port Alberni.
The three were thrashed from their inner tubes as they entered the portion of the river known as the Stamp Falls.
The body of 22-year-old Cory Donald Heinz was spotted floating in the river just after the falls. BC Coroners Officer confirmed Monday that Heinz drowned and was pulled from the river by a passer-by,
The two women, also in their early twenties, managed to find their way to adjacent rock beds beside the rushing water but found themselves in an extremely dangerous and precarious situation.
The Alberni Valley Search and Rescue was called into the area and preformed a very challenging and difficult rescue of the two girls.
The rescue included two kayaks and a team using rope to propel down the side of the cliff. After several hours the girls were removed from the rivers edge and taken to hospital. They were released and are now recovering with minor injuries.
The RCMP in Port Alberni issued a warning on June 26th after four friends narrowly escaped with their lives after a similar tubing accident.
The River is known as one of most dangerous and fatal rivers for outdoor recreation on Vancouver Island.

Port Alberni - Stamp Falls - Annual Salmon Run
Relax by the waterfall at this peaceful riverside park or explore the area by foot on hiking trails that weave their way through the lush forest, past waterfalls and river rapids. Named for the pioneer who built Port Alberni’s earliest sawmill, this park is an amalgamation of Stamp Falls and Money’s Pool provincial parks.
One of the park’s main attractions is the annual run of thousands of Pacific salmon circling in the pool below Stamp Falls before ascending the fish ladders on their way to spawning beds. Lookout points along the river offer excellent views of the salmon fighting their way up the falls and fish ladders. This natural phenomenon occurs every year, starting in late August with sockeye and continuing with coho and Chinook right into December.
The salmon are a draw for black bear as well, who head to the river for an easy meal. As always when in wilderness areas, safety precautions should be taken. While fishing within the park boundaries is not permitted, this park is a popular base camp for anglers fishing other parts of the Stamp River, as well as visitors traveling to and from the Pacific Rim.

Discover Alberni E01 - Sproat Lake 2018
Sproat Lake is one of the greatest natural treasures on Vancouver Island and a place renowned for its natural beauty. The waters of this popular British Columbia vacation destination are so clear that you can easily see 30 ft. down. Waterfront homes, cabins and lots dot the shoreline but the majority of Sproat Lakes 140 kilometers of foreshore remains uninhabited and is lined by beautiful Douglas Fir forest and some of British Columbia's most stunning freshwater beaches.
The 21 degree summer water helps make Sproat Lake an unmatched recreational paradise. Sproat Lake has 4 arms; Stirling Arm, Klehkoot Arm, Two Rivers Arm and Taylor Arm. Each Arm is unique. Stirling Arm is inhabited on one shore and largely uninhabited on the other, which enjoys Fossli Provincial Park. Klehkoot Arm is the most bustling arm on Sproat Lake and features the Sproat Lake Provincial Park. Two Rivers Arm is accessible only by unpaved road and its well sheltered shores remain sparsely inhabited. Taylor Arm is by far the longest arm on Sproat Lake and its marginally colder waters are home to Taylor Arm Provincial Park. The clear warm waters, wide open spaces, stunning natural beauty and central location makes Sproat lake a recreational paradise like no other.
It is almost like Sproat Lake was created to offer us endless entertainment. Popular past times on the lake include water skiing, boating hiking, camping and nature watching. Part of the area surrounding the lake has been preserved as a BC Provincial Park complete with campsites and a hiking trail. The lake is also known for its freshwater fishing in particular cutthroat Trout and Rainbow Trout. Boarding is another popular Sproat Lake past time and you will frequently see kayaks, canoes, houseboats, jet skis and motorboats enjoying the many arms of Sproat Lake. With so much to do on and off the water Sproat Lake truly is Vancouver Islands recreational paradise.
