Letchworth, officially Letchworth Garden City, is a town in Hertfordshire, England, It is a former civil parish. The town's name is taken from one of the three villages it surrounded (the other two being Willian and Norton) – all of which featured in the Domesday Book. The land used was purchased by Quakers who had intended to farm the area and build a Quaker community. The town of Letchworth was laid out by Raymond Unwin as a demonstration of the principles established by Ebenezer Howard who sought to create an alternative to the industrial city by combining the best of town and country living. It is also home to the United Kingdom's first roundabout, which was built in 1909.
As one of the world's first new towns and the first garden city it had great influence on future town planning and the New towns movement; it influenced Welwyn Garden City, which used a similar approach and inspired other projects around the world including the Australian capital Canberra, Hellerau, Germany, Tapanila, Finland, and Mežaparks in Latvia.) There is a link to town planning in Stalingrad through the architect V. N. Semionov and an account of Lenin visiting the town when he visited England for a congress of the Russian Bolshevik party, then banned in Russia.
Letchworth was one of the ancient parishes of Hertfordshire. The parish church of St Mary the Virgin was built in the 12th or 13th Century. The village was located along the road now called Letchworth Lane, stretching from St Mary's and the adjoining medieval manor house (now Letchworth Hall Hotel) up to the crossroads of Letchworth Lane, Hitchin Road, Baldock Road and Spring Road, where there was a post office. Letchworth was a relatively small parish, having a population in 1801 of 67, rising to 96 by 1901.
Several housing estates have been added to Letchworth since its inception. To the north of the town The Grange began construction in 1947 and to the south east Jackmans was built from 1961. These were council / municipal housing estates with many residents originally coming from the London overspill. Two more prosperous (and private) estates – Lordship and Manor Park – were built from in 1971 to the south west.
Letchworth experiences an oceanic climate (Köppen climate classification Cfb) similar to almost all of the United Kingdom. One sport that has had a remarkably difficult history (considering its national popularity) is association football. Letchworth's main semi-professional club – Letchworth F.C. (the Bluebirds) – went out of business in 2002, only a few years after reforming following Letchworth Garden City FC's financial problems, but nearly a century of struggle and repeated name changes.

Chiffchaff at Standalone Farm, Letchworth
Another traditional sound of spring and summer is the unmistakable sound of a chiffchaff, like the sound of a squeaky bike wheel your instance reaction is to look up and try and find the bird in question.
Walking along past Standalone Farm along the garden city greenway we did just that and spotted an early morning chiffchaff flicking about doing an early morning call, along with a bit of preening too.

Young Carrion Crow at Standalone Farm, Letchworth - June 2014
Walking along the garden city greenway passing Standalone farm we came across this young carrion crow, who was enjoying some personal learning time and not really being worried we were right next to him filming.
He looks quite young still with down still on his body but his colours were so strong and vivid.
A typical corvid inquisitive in everything going on around him it was fun to watch him taking everything in around him. There were two adult crows now too far away that were watching him, maybe they were the parents as one of them came to have a closer look at him a few minutes later.
It was lovely to spend a few moment with this young bird who kindly let us share his/her space for a while :)

Small Heath Butterfly at Standalone Farm, Letchworth - June 2014
Today saw us making an early trip over to the Garden City Greenway in Letchworth and the area around Standalone farm. The sun very quickly started to warm everywhere up and soon butterflies started to flick around the bushes and wild flowers alongside the Greenway,
Several of one type of butterfly caught our eye jostling for their space and stopping to feed on the flowers, on researching after they appear to be Small Health butterflies. I havei checked to see if they might be meadow browns but upon looking at the footage against meadow brown pics, and the fact that the butterflies were lateral basking i'm going with small heaths, although i'm happy if someone looking in can confirm.
Garden City Greenway - Full circuit July 2015
An update in July 2015 cycling around the Letchworth Garden City Greenway from Stotfold to Radwell, Norton, Baldock, Jackmans, Willian, Wymondley Wood, Purwell on the edge of Hitchin, Letchworth Golf Course area, Harkness Roses, Highfield, Fearnhill, Wilbury Hills (passed The Gardeners Arms at 30:45, now infamous in the Simon Pegg movie The Worlds End) and touching the edges of Standalone farm and the Grange Estate.
It is noticeable that many of the pathways have been re-laid or upgraded since my last outing. It is still a wonderful diverse ride all the way round with greats views, solitude, and interesting areas of beauty.
Much of the eastern route running alongside the A1 is on National Cycle Route 12 and some of the Great North Way -
Covering town, residential, industrial, rolling Hertfordshire hills and areas of outstanding natural beauty including some great views, local attractions, some roads and many remote dedicated recreational country paths around Letchworth, Baldock, Willian and the edge of Hitchin in North Hertfordshire - England, UK.
There are 60 numbered way point markers on the route marked on the Greenway website's map: - some markers are more battered and weathered than others but they are slowly being replaced and are marked on the video to show where you are on the route.
Alternative Map of Route:
This film is speeded up by 225% - It takes roughly 1.5 - 2 hours on a clear day with no wind and has a number of semi-challenging hill climbs and descents. Just over 13 miles all the way round.
