Standedge Tunnel is an incredible feat of engineering sitting beneath the Yorkshire Pennines. At 3.25 miles it is the longest canal tunnel in Britain which opened in 1811 after 17 years of construction under renowned engineers Benjamin Outram and Thomas Telford. The achievement allowed goods to be transported between northern towns by narrowboat for over 100 years. However, following the railway taking traffic from the canals, Standedge Tunnel stood derelict for decades until undergoing a 20 year restoration programme and opening once again to boats in 2001 along with visitor centre, play areas and Watersedge Café. Once a thriving service to the industrial revolution, the tunnel now sees private leisure boats and day-trippers travelling through, while enjoying the exhibitions and special events the attraction has to offer.
69. Exploring Standedge Tunnel. The Longest, Highest, Deepest Canal Tunnel in the UK
Today we take Narrowboat Silver Fox deep under the Pennines, exploring Standedge Tunnel. The Longest, Highest, Deepest Canal Tunnel in the UK.
Situated on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, Standedge Tunnel links Marsden in West Yorkshire with Diggle in Greater Manchester, Lancashire.
Colin explores the dark, mysterious, disused railway tunnels that run alongside the canal tunnel and ventures high up onto the moors to check out a ventilation shaft, hundreds of feet overhead from the canal.
With a reputation for damaging boats passing through it, can we make it through without incident?
You can also watch our realtime journey through the tunnel here:
Many thanks to the Canal and River Trust for allowing us to use the historical photographs, and for the amazing chaperone who gave us so much information about the tunnel and its history.

The Standedge Tunnels are four paralleltunnels beneath the Pennines in northern England. Three are railwaytunnels and the other is a canal tunnel. They are located at the Standedge(pronounced Stannige) crossing point between Marsden and Diggle, across the boundary between the West Yorkshire and Greater Manchesterconurbations. Before boundary changes in 1974, both ends of the tunnel were in the West Riding of Yorkshire. The canal tunnel is on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal. It opened in 1811 and is the longest and oldest of the four and is the longest and highest canal tunnel in the United Kingdom.[1] The first single-track railway tunnel was completed by the London and North Western Railway(LNWR) in 1848 on the line between Huddersfield and Manchester and a second parallel tunnel opened in 1871. The LNWR opened a third tunnel with double tracks in 1894 All four tunnels are linked by cross-tunnels or adits at strategic intervals, which allowed the railway tunnels to be built quickly, reducing the need for construction shafts, as waste could be removed by boat.Of the railway tunnels, only the one built in 1894 is currently used for rail traffic. Closed in 1943, the canal tunnel was re-opened in May 2001. The Standedge Tunnel Visitor Centre, at the Marsden end, is a base for boat trips into the tunnel and hosts an exhibition depicting the different crossings..

Civil Engineer, Helen Braidwood, talks to us from the Huddersfield Narrow Canal which is joined on both sides by the Standedge Tunnel. The 32km canal is the highest in the UK – 197m above sea level as it passes through the Standedge tunnel. With 74 locks, 10 reservoirs and 5 aqueducts, it can take boats up to 21.3m long and 2.1m wide.
