A Scenic Float | Under The Sawtooth Mountains (Stanley, ID)
Stanley Idaho is one of the most scenic places on earth. The Sawtooth Mountains provide an amazing backdrop to a plethora of outdoor activities. With the Salmon River running through this beautiful mountain town there are a number of white water river opportunities to be enjoyed. We teamed up with our friends at the River Company for a nice relaxing scenic float on the headwater of the mighty Salmon. If you come to Stanley from Boise, through Banks or Idaho City, the River Company is the first building on the left of the highway as you enter town. You can book day trips there or rent inflatable kayaks or stand up paddle boards. The scenic stretch of the Salmon is very easy and you can do it on your own, but if you have no river experience a guide or outfitter is the safest way to go. The scenic float makes for a great family half day trip either before or after lunch. The boat box on the river is located about 2-3 miles past upper Stanley heading north on highway 75. It will be on your right hand side. It fits at most 4 people so plan accordingly to miss the crowds.

Stanley, ID - Iron Creek Trail, Alpine Lake
Went on a backpacking trip with three of my friends to Stanley, ID. We spent the night at the Iron Creek Campground on our first day. The next morning we hiked the Iron Creek Trail to Alpine Lake, which was about 4 miles. This is where we set up our campground! From here we had another mile on the trail to Sawtooth Lake, but instead of following the trail we decided to climb Mt. Alpine to get the view from the top. The climb was strenuous, but it was well worth it. We finished the day with a campfire and some delicious S`mores!

Nestled in central Idaho's Sawtooth Wilderness is the tiny town of Stanley, population 67. Fur Trappers settles in the Stanley Basin in 1820 but found the are scarcely populated by beaver so they moved on. Shortly after in 1863 Captain John Stanley, a Civil War veteran, settled the area with a party of prospectors in the search for gold. Again, the basin was a financial disappointment, gold seemed to be as elusive as the beaver. Today the tiny town bustles during the summer months with white water rafters, kayakers, hikers, mountain bikers, hot spring enthusiasts and nature lovers.
