Stanley Mills: Preserving Scotland's Heritage
The Duke of Rothesay, as The Prince of Wales is known in Scotland, visits the restored Stanley Mills in Perth, Scotland in June 2010. His Royal Highness's charity, The Prince's Regeneration Trust (PRT), worked with partners such as Historic Scotland in order to undertake the complex and costly task of reviving the badly neglected buildings. During The Duke's visit, the PRT receive a prestigious Europa Nostra award, which recognises the importance of Stanley Mills to Scotland's built heritage.

Tour Scotland video of old photographs of Stanley, Perthshire. Stanley is a village on the right bank of the River Tay in an area popular for salmon fishing. The village gained its name from Lady Amelia Stanley, the daughter of James Stanley, 7th Earl of Derby. John Murray, the 4th Duke of Atholl, decided, in the 18th century to harness of the nearby River Tay to power a cotton mill., Richard Arkwright, an inventor of cotton spinning machinery set up a cotton mill in Stanley as well as one at New Lanark. Stanley Mills opened in 1787, and by its 10th year employed 350 people. The village was built to house the workers of the mill. Work on the village began in 1784. It was designed by the Duke of Atholl’s factor James Stobie. By 1799 the village’s population was around 400, and by 1831 it had reached around 2000 residents.

This is a short video of the historic Stanley Cotton Mill facilities in the town of Stanley, Perthshire Scotland. The mill was basically abandoned as better methods of milling cotton and more recently the historic and development potential was realized. Many of the old mill buildings are being renovated and turned into flats and apartments. However, a portion has been set aside as a historical site and some of the machinery is still in place.
