AERIAL PLANESPOTTING OVER LAX with Star Helicopters!
Something that's on the bucket list of most aviation enthusiasts is plane spotting from a helicopter over Los Angeles International Airport, the second busiest airport in the United States. In mid-November, I paid a visit to Southern California to do just that! With Star Helicopters, I flew from Hawthorne Municipal Airport (just a 5 minute flight from LAX) and circled over the terminals of LAX for about half an hour, finishing off with a flypast of the south side of the airfield on the way back to Hawthorne. It was quite the tough call at times whether to film or take photos, but I think I achieved a good balance! I would definitely do this again in a heartbeat. Enjoy this unique plane spotting footage from this incredible helicopter ride!
Thanks for watching!
A special thank you to Sean for allowing me to borrow his GoPro!

ANTHELION HELICOPTERS ~ THE PREMIER LOS ANGELES HELICOPTER FLIGHT TRAINING AND TOURS SCHOOL
ANTHELION HELICOPTERS FOUNDER AND CEO
Alex became a helicopter pilot in 2001 upon getting thoroughly addicted during his first helicopter demo flight at the Torrance Airport in California. However, even before that first flight, the sight of another student doing something that looked so cool and yet just as difficult sparked his desire to learn.
Alex was very lucky to have an inspirational helicopter pilot instructor at the time that helped him make his dream become a reality. Alex’s instructor cemented his passion for helicopters and love for the open skies. He was set on becoming a helicopter pilot Los Angeles, CA.
After a few years of working for the British Royal Navy and the Ministry of Defense Alex came back to the United States in 2007 to continue his career and become a helicopter pilot in Los Angeles, CA. Even during the time of working as a successful Flight Instructor, Utility Pilot, and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) pilot Alex has always had the dream of starting his own helicopter flight training company.
Alex’s chance came when he got together with Nina, Chief Pilot, to create Anthelion Helicopters. A helicopter company that focuses on helicopter flight training lessons, helicopter tours, and aerial photography.
Alex surrounded himself with a great team of people that share the same core values of safety, integrity, passion, and love for the entire business experience. Being half of the founding team for Anthelion Helicopters, Alex hopes that he will be able to develop and inspire the same love and passion for helicopters in his students as the one he has for it himself.
Anthelion Helicopters - Nina
CO-FOUNDER AND CHIEF PILOT
After graduating from college and a brief career in Law Enforcement. Nina realized that she must pursue her true desire to becoming a helicopter flight school instructor.
Nina first began flying helicopters in 2003 and instantly fell in love with it. The freedom of the skies and the versatile maneuvers of the helicopters inspired her to continue on her journey. Although rated in airplanes as well, Nina knew that helicopters are her true passion.
Nina has experience with a handful of helicopters in a variety of commercial positions; from Flight School Instruction to Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to Chief Piloting to starting a charter certificate. She has always wanted to build something from the ground up and to be a part of something larger than herself. So now she finds herself in Long Beach, CA surrounded by a great team that shares the same love and passion for flying.
As a Chief Pilot, Nina is excited to bring a helicopter training school to the Long Beach area. Along with her co-founder Alex and the team, she is thrilled to develop and nurture the same love for the skies in others, as she has realized in herself.
Why Choose Anthelion Helicopters?
We are an approved FAA Part 141 flight school. This means that all our flight and ground syllabuses under this part have been approved by the FAA. All our aircraft, instructors and our facility have also been independently scrutinized and approved by the FAA and have been shown to adhere to their extremely high standards of safety.
Whether you have never been in an aircraft before or you are an airline captain looking for an add-on rating, Anthelion Helicopters has the right program for you, for a private helicopter license.
Through our combined 20 years of experience, we know what is most effective and efficient in the flight training industry. We understand that our students lead busy and often complicated lives. Therefore, we customize each California helicopter pilot training plan to work around our student’s busy schedules.

El Capitan Reservoir is a reservoir in central San Diego County, California about 30 miles northeast of the city of San Diego and two miles north of the town of Alpine.
Montgomery Field (MYF) is centrally located in the Kearny Mesa area of the City. The airport is home base to approximately 600 aircraft and offers a 3400' lighted runway served by an Instrument Landing System (ILS), with 4,577 feet available for takeoff, a 3,400' parallel runway, a 3,400' crosswind runway, a control tower operating 6:00 am - 9:00 pm daily, and a full range of aviation support facilities.
On May 20, 1950 the City of San Diego named Montgomery Field in honor of John J. Montgomery who is credited with making the first controlled flight in a fixed wing aircraft. Montgomery's first glider flight took place in the Otay Mesa area of San Diego in 1883.
The City of San Diego purchased the airport from Willliam (Bill) Gibbs in 1947. The airport, originally known as Gibbs Field, opened in 1937 with a single runway. In 1940 Bill Gibbs leased the airport to Ryan School of Aeronautics to train Army Air Corps cadets to fly.
Wikipedia
John Joseph Montgomery (February 15, 1858 October 31, 1911) was an aviation pioneer, inventor, professor at Santa Clara College.
On August 28, 1883 he made the first manned, controlled, heavier-than-air flights of the United States, in the Otay Mesa area of San Diego, California (after European pioneers such as George Cayley's coachman in 1853, or Jean-Marie Le Bris in 1856). Later, in 1905, Montgomery's pilot Daniel Maloney made a series of remarkable flights in the vicinity of Aptos and Santa Clara using tandem wing Montgomery gliders launched from balloons. These flights demonstrated the controllability of the Montgomery design and were the highest flights achieved by man to date. John Montgomery was issued U.S. Patent #831,173 on September 18, 1906 for his invention of an aeroplane. He was a member of the Aero Club of Illinois (1910) and member of the research committee of the Technical Board of the New York Aeronautical Society (1911).
Montgomery died in the crash of his glider The Evergreen on October 31, 1911 and was buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma, California on November 3, 1911.
In 1946, John J. Montgomery's life was portrayed in the movie Gallant Journey starring Glenn Ford and Janet Blair, and directed by William Wellman.

El Capitan Reservoir is a reservoir in central San Diego County, California about 30 miles (50 km) northeast of the city of San Diego and two miles north of the town of Alpine. The reservoir is formed by El Capitan Dam on the San Diego River and has a capacity of 112,800 acre feet (139,100,000 m3). The 237-foot (72 m) dam is composed of hydraulic fill and was completed in 1934. The dam is owned by the city of San Diego and its primary purpose is to supply drinking water. It is the largest of the city's reservoirs.
The Cessna 172 Skyhawk is a four-seat, single-engine, high-wing fixed-wing aircraft made by the Cessna Aircraft Company. First flown in 1955, more Cessna 172s have been built than any other aircraft.
Measured by its longevity and popularity, the Cessna 172 is the most successful aircraft in history. Cessna delivered the first production models in 1956. As of 2012, Cessna, and its partners, had built around 60,000. The Skyhawk's main competitors have been the Beechcraft Musketeer and Grumman AA-5 series (neither in production), the Piper Cherokee, and, more recently, the Diamond DA40.
The Cessna 172 started life as a tricycle landing gear variant of the taildragger Cessna 170, with a basic level of standard equipment. In January 1955, Cessna flew an improved variant of the Cessna 170, a Continental O-300-A-powered Cessna 170C with larger elevators and a more angular tailfin. Although the variant was tested and certified, Cessna decided to modify it with a tricycle landing gear, and the modified Cessna 170C flew again on 12 June 1955. To reduce the time and cost of certification, the type was added to the Cessna 170 type certificate as the Model 172. Later, the 172 was given its own type certificate, 3A12. The 172 became an overnight sales success, and over 1,400 were built in 1956, its first full year of production.

B-17 Flying Fortress at Torrance Airport 2 2 1 - 040810 - Aviation
Black Rock Pictures LA 0061 - B-17 Flying Fortress just after landing in Torrance, California.
The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress is a four-engine heavy bomber aircraft developed for the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC) introduced in the 1930s. Competing against Douglas and Martin for a contract to build 200 bombers, the Boeing entry outperformed both competitors and more than met the Air Corps' expectations. Although Boeing lost the contract because the prototype crashed, the Air Corps was so impressed with Boeing's design that they ordered 13 B-17s. The B-17 Flying Fortress evolved through numerous design advancements.
The B-17 was primarily employed by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) in the daylight precision strategic bombing campaign of World War II against German industrial, civilian, and military targets. The United States Eighth Air Force based in England and the Fifteenth Air Force based in Italy complemented the RAF Bomber Command's nighttime area bombing in Operation Pointblank to help secure air superiority over the cities, factories and battlefields of Western Europe in preparation for Operation Overlord.[4] The B-17 also participated to a lesser extent in the War in the Pacific where it conducted raids against Japanese shipping and airfields.
From its pre-war inception, the USAAC (later USAAF) touted the aircraft as a strategic weapon; it was a potent, high-flying, long-ranging bomber capable of unleashing great destruction, able to defend itself, and having the ability to return home despite extensive battle damage. It quickly took on mythic proportions. Stories and photos of B-17s surviving battle damage widely circulated, increasing its iconic status. Despite an inferior range and bombload compared to the more numerous B-24 Liberator, a survey of Eighth Air Force crews showed a much higher rate of satisfaction in the B-17. With a service ceiling greater than any of its Allied contemporaries, the B-17 established itself as a superb weapons system, dropping more bombs than any other U.S. aircraft in World War II. Of the 1.5 million metric tons of bombs dropped on Germany by U.S. aircraft, 640,000 t were dropped from B-17s.

Torrance (TOA) California Airport (Zamperini Field) Driving Directions 14 Minutes
About this Airport:
Zamperini Field (IATA: TOA, ICAO: KTOA, FAA LID: TOA) is a city-owned public airport three miles (5 km) southwest of downtown Torrance, in Los Angeles County, California, United States.[1]
The airport is classified by the FAA as a Regional Reliever[2] , and was once known as Torrance Municipal Airport, was renamed for local sports and war hero Louis Zamperini on December 7, 1946, the 5th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
The airport was completed by the United States Army Air Forces on 31 March 1943,[3] and was known as Lomita Flight Strip. It was an emergency landing field for military aircraft on training flights. It was closed after World War II and the War Assets Administration (WAA) turned it over to local government. Once turned over to the City of Torrance it was renamed Zamperini Field on December 7, 1946.

4 Marines and Gunman Die in Attack on Two Military Sites
A gunman unleashed a barrage of fire at a recruiting station and another U.S. military site a few miles apart in Chattanooga on Thursday, killing at least four Marines. The attacker was also killed. U.S. Attorney Bill Killian said officials were investigating the possibility it was domestic terrorism. FBI agent Ed Reinhold said authorities were still trying to establish a motive. A U.S. official speaking on condition of anonymity identified the gunman as 24-year-old Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez of Hixson, Tennessee, and said he was believed to have been born in Kuwait, though it was unclear whether he was a U.S. or Kuwaiti citizen.
