Built in 1793, the Star-Spangled Banner Flag House was the home and place of business of Mary Pickersgill, maker of the flag that flew over Fort McHenry during the British attack in 1814. Today, it is a living-history museum that offers a view of American life during the early 19th century.
In 1813 Fort McHenrys commanding officer Major George Armistead commissioned Mary Pickersgill, an experienced flag maker to create a flag that was so large that the British will have no difficulty seeing it from a distance. During the bombardment of Fort McHenry, U.S. Attorney Francis Scott Key was aboard a British truce vessel. Inspired by the vision of the 30inch x 42inch flag, he wrote the poem that would become our national anthem.

Fort McHenry and The Star-Spangled Banner - Baltimore, Maryland
During the War of 1812, invading British forces attacked Baltimore in September 1814, an attack that included the bombardment of Fort McHenry at Baltimore's harbor. In anticipation of that attack, the Americans commissioned the creation of a large American flag to be flown at the fort, big enough that the British would have no problem seeing it.
The British bombarded the fort for 27 house, firing more than 1500 cannonballs at the fort. But the next morning, the large American flag was raised for reveille as it was every morning.
Lawyer Francis Scott Key was on a British boat at the time of the battle seeking the release of an American doctor held prisoner. When Key saw the American flag that morning he wrote down verses of a poem which he titled Defense of Fort McHenry. The poem was set to the tune of the song To Anacreon in Heaven, and soon became widely known as The Star-Spangled Banner. In 1931 Congress officially made the song the United States national anthem.
Happy 200th birthday to The Star-Spangled Banner.

Fort McHenry National Monument - Birthplace of The Star-Spangled Banner
My son and I traveled to Fort McHenry National Monument in June of 2017 to learn about the brave soldiers who fought off the British sea attack to save the city of Baltimore. It was Francis Scott Key who witnessed the evening assault and observed the American flag raised in the morning. This event inspired him to write The Star-Spangled Banner.

Baltimore, Maryland - Fort McHenry Full Tour (2019)
Fort McHenry is a historical American coastal pentagonal bastion fort located in the Locust Point neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland. It is best known for its role in the War of 1812, when it successfully defended Baltimore Harbor from an attack by the British navy from the Chesapeake Bay on September 13–14, 1814. It was first built in 1798 and was used continuously by the U.S. armed forces through World War I and by the Coast Guard in World War II. It was designated a national park in 1925, and in 1939 was redesignated a National Monument and Historic Shrine.
During the War of 1812 an American storm flag, 17 by 25 feet (5.2 m × 7.6 m), was flown over Fort McHenry during the bombardment. It was replaced early on the morning of September 14, 1814 with a larger American garrison flag, 30 by 42 feet (9.1 m × 12.8 m). The larger flag signaled American victory over the British in the Battle of Baltimore. The sight of the ensign inspired Francis Scott Key to write the poem Defence of Fort M'Henry that was later set to the tune To Anacreon in Heaven and became known as The Star Spangled Banner, the national anthem of the United States.
Maryland Historical Society re-creates the Star Spangled Banner
200 years ago Mary Pickersgill created the 30 x 42' garrison flag for Ft. McHenry that would become immortalized as the Star Spangled Banner. The Maryland Historical Society re-created that iconic flag using original materials and techniques. This short video shows the entire process from thread to flying. The Star Spangled Banner! (Happy 241st Birthday America!)
The Star-Spangled Banner is the national anthem of the United States of America. The lyrics come from Defence of Fort M'Henry,[2] a poem written on September 14, 1814, by the 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet Francis Scott Key after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry by British ships of the Royal Navy in Baltimore Harbor during the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812. Key was inspired by the large American flag, the Star-Spangled Banner, flying triumphantly above the fort during the American victory.
