Boating To Mackinac Island From St Ignace, MI
Mackinac Island (/ˈmækᵻnɔː/ MAK-in-aw) is an island and resort area, covering 3.8 square miles (9.8 km2) in land area, in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is located in Lake Huron, at the eastern end of the Straits of Mackinac, between the state's Upper and Lower Peninsulas. The island was home to an Odawa settlement before European exploration began in the 17th century. It served a strategic position as a center on the commerce of the Great Lakes fur trade. This led to the establishment of Fort Mackinac on the island by the British during the American Revolutionary War. It was the site of two battles during the War of 1812.
In the late 19th century, Mackinac Island became a popular tourist attraction and summer colony. Much of the island has undergone extensive historical preservation and restoration; as a result, the entire island is listed as a National Historic Landmark. It is well known for its numerous cultural events; its wide variety of architectural styles, including the famous Victorian Grand Hotel; its fudge; and its ban on almost all motor vehicles. More than 80 percent of the island is preserved as Mackinac Island State Park
The island can be reached by private boat, by ferry, by small aircraft, and in the winter, by snowmobile over an ice bridge. The airport has a 3,500-foot (1,070 m) paved runway, and daily charter air service from the mainland is available. In the summer tourist season, ferry service is available from Arnold Transit Company, Shepler's Ferry, and Star Line Ferry to shuttle visitors to the island from St. Ignace and Mackinaw City.
Motorized vehicles have been prohibited on the island since 1898, with the exception of snowmobiles during winter, emergency vehicles, and service vehicles. Travel on the island is either by foot, bicycle, or horse-drawn carriage. Roller skates and roller blades are also allowed, except in the downtown area. Bicycles, roller skates/roller blades, carriages, and saddle horses are available for rent. An 8-mile (13 km) road follows the island's perimeter, and numerous roads, trails and paths cover the interior. M-185, the United States' only state highway without motorized vehicles, makes a circular loop around the island, closely hugging the shoreline.
The island is the location of Mackinac Island State Park, which covers approximately 80 percent of the island and includes Fort Mackinac as well as portions of the island's historic downtown and harbor. No camping is allowed on the island, but numerous hotels and bed and breakfasts are available.
The downtown streets are lined with many retail stores, candy shops, and restaurants. A popular item at the candy shops is the locally produced and nationally known Mackinac Island fudge, leading to tourists sometimes being referred to as fudgies. Many shops sell a variety of fudge, and some of the confectioners have been operating for more than a century. The popularity of the fudge has led to the sales and marketing of Mackinac Island fudge not only throughout Michigan but outside the state as well

s.s. Noronic - Northern Nav. Com.- Great Lakes - League of the Legends Violin
Noronic was launched June 2, 1913 in Port Arthur, Ontario, Canada She was built by the Western Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Company for the Northern Navigation Company, an operating division of Canada Steamship Lines (CSL), to perform passenger and package freight service on the Great Lakes. She had five decks, was 362 feet (110 m) in length, and measured 6,095 gross register tons. At maximum capacity, she could hold 600 passengers and 200 crew. On September 14, 1949, the Noronic embarked on a seven-day pleasure cruise of Lake Ontario from Detroit, Michigan. The ship was to make two overnight stops in Canada before returning to Detroit. Most of her 524 passengers were Americans, and 171 crew members were aboard as well. The captain on the voyage was Capt. William Taylor. At night the ship began to fire and burned totally out.

Mackinac Bridge, Labor Day, Michigan
Mackinac Bridge, Labor Day, Michigan
EAST LANSING, MICH. - Thousands of people will walk across the Mackinac Bridge Monday as part of the annual Labor Day bridge walk.
Later this month, MSU prof Nizar Lajnef will hit the bridge for a step forward of his own. He'll be lowered beneath the iconic, 58-year-old suspension bridge that connects Michigan's two peninsulas to place sensors under its deck.
The purpose: Monitor stress on the bridge's aging structure.
We don't have to wait until it's broken and then try to fix it, said Lajnef, who teaches environmental and civil engineering at Michigan State University. We're trying to monitor its health over time.
The project is a test, but if it works, stress sensors could become commonplace on structures around the country, from the Mackinac Bridge to the Hoover Dam.
Lajnef and an MSU team have been working on the sensor project for seven years with funding from the Federal Highway Administration. A recent grant of $1.5 million to MSU, Washington University at St. Louis and the University of Nevada-Reno will put sensor prototypes in place at several spots around the country.
The 5-mile-long Mackinac Bridge is the third-longest suspension bridge in the world. About 3.9 million vehicles crossed it in 2015.
Weather and traffic loads cause cracks in roads and bridges that weaken them over time. A typical roadway in the United States lasts five to 10 years; a bridge is 50 to 70 years.
People have been trying for a long time to design methods to assess the condition of bridges, Lajnef said. The current standard: periodic visual inspections.
Lajnef's team created a sensor that charges itself from the energy of movement across the bridge, so it requires little in the way of maintenance. He projects the production cost to be less than $1 apiece.
The sensors wirelessly transmit data about the structure's response to traffic. After a baseline is created, any variance could indicate a problem.
When the stresses are outside the normal range, the sensor will tell you so that you can fix it before it is too late, before the components break, he said.
Lajnef expects to install the bridge sensors around Sept. 14. Initially, six sensors will be put in place. If they perform as expected, more will be added in the spring. The bridge could eventually contain hundreds of sensors.
