Mexico City: National Palace
The National Palace (Spanish: Palacio Nacional) is the seat of the federal executive in Mexico. It is located on Mexico City's main square, the Plaza de la Constitución (El Zócalo). This site has been a palace for the ruling class of Mexico since the Aztec empire, and much of the current palace's building materials are from the original one that belonged to Moctezuma II.
Used and classified as a Government Building, the National Palace, with its red tezontle facade, fills the entire east side of the Zócalo, measuring over 200 meters long. It is home to some of the offices of both the Federal Treasury and the National Archives.
The facade is bordered on the north and south by two towers and includes three main doorways, each of which lead to a different part of the building. The southern door leads to the Patio of Honor and presidential offices (no public access). The northern door is known as the Mariana Door, named in honor of Mariano Arista who had it constructed in 1850. The area next to this door used to be the old Court Prison, with courtrooms and torture chambers. It is now occupied by the Finance Ministry. It contains the Treasury Room, constructed by architects Manuel Ortiz Monasterio and Vicente Mendiola. The iron and bronze door is the work of Augusto Petriccioli.
Above the central doorway, facing the Zócalo, is the main balcony where just before 11pm on September 15, the president of Mexico gives the Grito de Dolores, in a ceremony to commemorate Mexican Independence. Part of this ceremony includes ringing the bell that hangs above the balcony. This bell is the original one that Father Miguel Hidalgo rang to call for rebellion against Spain. It originally hung in the church of Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato, but was relocated here. In the niche containing the bell, there is the Mexican coat of arms. On each side there is an Aztec eagle knight and his Spanish counterpart. These were sculpted by Manuel Centurion and symbolize the synthesis of Mexican culture and Spanish culture.
The central door leads to the main patio which is surrounded by Baroque arches. Only the balustrade of this area has been remodeled, conserving the murals by Diego Rivera that adorn the main stairwell and the walls of the second floor. In the stairwell is a mural depicting the history of Mexico from 1521 to 1930,[1] and covers an area of 450 m2 (4800 ft2). These murals were painted between 1929 and 1935, jointly titled The Epic of the Mexican People.
Diego also painted 11 panels on the middle floor, such as the Tianguis of Tlatelolco (tianguis means market), and the Arrival of Hernán Cortés in Veracruz. These are part of a series depicting the pre-Hispanic era. Peoples such as the Tarascos of Michoacán, the Zapotecs and Mixtecs of Oaxaca and the Huastecs of Hidalgo, San Luis Potosí and Veracruz. However, this series was not finished.
On the upper floor is what once was the Theatre Room of the viceroys, which became the Chamber of Deputies from 1829 to August 22, 1872, when the room was accidentally destroyed by fire. In this parliamentary chamber the Reform Constitution of 1857 was written. This and the Constitution of 1917 are on display.
The Palace has fourteen courtyards but only a few of these, such as the Grand Courtyard beyond the central portal, are open to the public. The National Palace also houses the main State Archives, with many historical documents, and the Biblioteca Miguel Lerdo de Tejada, one of the largest and most important libraries in the country.
On north annex of the building is the Treasury Room and the Benito Juárez Museum. Between the two is the Empress Stairway, built by brothers Juan and Ramón Agea. When faced with claims that their work was unstable and would collapse, they had a full battalion charge down them while they stood underneath. The Treasury Room is no longer in use. Leading to the Museum part of the complex, which used to be the Finance Ministry, is a statue of Benito Juárez by Miguel Noreña. This work was criticized at the time because it was felt that such an honored person should not be depicted sitting on his coattails, as it was contrary to social etiquette at the time. In the Finance Ministry patio is the Benito Juárez Room, where this president lived during the end of his term and where he died on July 18, 1872. The bedroom, living room and study have been preserved complete with a number of objects belonging to the president.

They only allowed civilian vehicles to pass.
The same reception was given in each of the four corners of Oaxaca. For example, in the Isthmus de Tehuantepec, 8 hours away from the city of Oaxaca, at least three large barricades were erected to prevent access to the elements of the Gendarmería, a partnership created for the fight against drug trafficking....

At least 20 people have been confirmed dead in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca following Thursday's earthquake.
The quake -- with a magnitude of seven-point-five -- was felt as far south as Guatemala, and sent high-rises swaying in Mexico City.
Panic hits Oaxaca city as the quake strikes - the moment is caught on camera during an address by the state's governor, Jose Murat.
The force and unusual length of the quake was felt hundreds of miles from the epicentre.
But while the governor tried to calm the crowd, the quake claimed several lives.
A pool of blood on the sidewalk downtown marked the spot where 18-year-old Teresa de Jesus Garcia was killed by a stone cornice that fell from a building.
The stationery store employee apparently rushed outside when the quake struck, only to be crushed by the falling stone.
Three other deaths occurred in the city, the capital of Oaxaca state.
Two people huddling in a doorway were killed when it collapsed, and another person died under falling debris while fleeing a building.

Mexico's government auctions off 82 cars seized from cartels
The first auction, set for Sunday, will seek bids for 82 vehicles with a total starting price of around $1.5 million, Ricardo Rodriguez, head of the newly created Institute to Return Stolen Goods to the People, said at a news conference. Ahead of the auction, the cars were on display at the Los Pinos presidential mansion, which leftwing anti-corruption President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has refused to occupy as part of his vow of personal austerity while in office. 'The government used to be like a reverse Robin Hood, they stole from the people and gave to the rich,' said Rodriguez. 'But not anymore: now we're going to give back to the people, transparently. MEXICO CITY -- A strong earthquake struck in southern Mexico on Monday afternoon, but there were no reports of injuries or significant damage.
Authorities said the quake was felt in five states. Tall buildings swayed in Mexico City 215 miles (350 kilometers) from the quake's epicenter.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the tremor had a preliminary magnitude of 5.7 and its epicenter was in the southern state of Oaxaca, about 6 miles (10 kilometers) north of the town of Pinotepa de Don Luis. The quake struck at a depth of 6 miles (10 kilometers).
Felipe Reyna, coordinator for civil protection in Oaxaca, told Milenio TV that there were no initial signs of significant damage or anyone being hurt. Oaxaca Gov. Gabino Cue tweeted that there was no damage to strategic installations or state services.
The quake set tall buildings rocking in Mexico City, causing people to briefly leave offices and congregate in the streets. Much of the Mexican capital is built over a former lakebed, which means that residents often feel even faraway tremors.
The official Twitter account of National Civil Protection Coordinator Luis Felipe Puente said the temblor was also felt in the states of Guerrero, Puebla and Tlaxcala.

It is a highway that implies a great work of engineering. First of all, 283 km are going to be modernized, in other words, the width of the highway will be modified, mainly between Oaxaca and Ejutla. The highway will be modernized, meaning that it will be much broader, which will greatly enhance communication.

This highway symbolizes the fact that Federal Government is committed to southern Mexico.

We are building the roads that will enable us to advance boldly towards the development of the different regions of our country. And it is not only for Oaxaca. We are also working on a long-awaited project that will enable us to have a much more modern, safer and quicker highway that will provide rapid links between the capital, Oaxaca and the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and specifically, the expansion of the Oaxaca-Salina Cruz highway.
Mexico radioactive alert: Five states on alert after thieves steal truck full of Iridium 192
Five Mexican states have been put on alert after thieves stole hazardous radioactive material from a truck.
The alert in Tabasco, Campeche, Chiapas, Oaxaca and Veracruz states was issued after a truck containing the radioactive element Iridium 192 was stolen from Cardenas in Tabasco on April 13.
Iridium 192 is typically used in industrial inspections, and can be dangerous if removed from its container. Short-term exposure can cause permanent skin lesions while long-term exposure can prove fatal.
Authorities reportedly recovered the truck outside a bus station on April 14 but said the radioactive material was missing, according to Excelsior.
Authorities have advised anyone who thinks they have discovered the missing material to stay at least 30m away and notify them immediately.
The theft is the latest in a series of incidents during which radioactive material has been stolen in Mexico.

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A 7.2 magnitude quake rocked Mexico on Friday, a prolonged rumble that the government said had caused minor damage to buildings in the southern state of Oaxaca, but with no preliminary reports of deaths. Both the south of Mexico and the capital are still reeling from earthquakes that caused widespread damage in September. In Mexico City, tall buildings swayed for more than a minute as seismic alarms sounded, with older structures in the chic Condesa neighborhood knocking into each other, and some cracks appearing in plaster and paintwork. “She recognized the sound. MEXICO CITY — The most powerful earthquake to hit Mexico in 100 years struck off the nation’s Pacific Coast late Thursday, rattling millions of residents in Mexico City with its violent tremors, killing at least 32 people and leveling some areas in the southern part of the country, closer to the quake’s epicenter.
About 50 million people across Mexico felt the earthquake, which had a magnitude of 8.2, the government said. In the capital, the force of the temblor sent residents of the megacity fleeing into the streets at midnight, shaken by alarms blaring over loudspeakers and a full minute of tremors. Windows broke, walls collapsed, and the city seemed to convulse in terrifying waves; the quake even rocked the city’s Angel of Independence monument.
While Mexico City seemed to have been spared extensive damage to infrastructure, according to the government’s preliminary assessment, the effects in the southern states of Chiapas and Oaxaca were probably more severe. The tally of damage — and death — probably will be difficult to assess initially, given that many areas are remote.
Alejandro Murat, the governor of Oaxaca, told the Televisa network that at least 23 people had died in the state, and local officials said residents were buried under the rubble of buildings.
Luis Manuel García Moreno, the secretary of civil defense for the state of Chiapas, said the toll there had risen to seven, and two children died in the state of Tabasco, one when a wall collapsed, the other after a respirator lost power in a hospital.
The effects were also felt in Guatemala, where at least one person died and homes along the border with Mexico were leveled.
Schools in at least 10 Mexican states and in Mexico City were closed on Friday as the president ordered an immediate assessment of the damage nationwide. In the hours after the quake, the National Seismological Service registered several aftershocks.
Still, the resounding feeling in the country was one, at least initially, of relief that the damage was not more widespread, given the nation’s vulnerability to earthquakes and the capital’s extreme density.
“We are assessing the damage, which will probably take hours, if not days,” said President Enrique Peña Nieto, who addressed the nation just two hours after the quake. “But the population is safe over all. There should not be a major sense of panic.”
Mexico is situated near several boundaries where portions of the earth’s crust collide. The quake on Thursday was more powerful than the one that killed nearly 10,000 people in 1985.
While the quake on Thursday struck nearly 450 miles from the capital and off the coast of Chiapas State, the one in 1985 was much closer to the city — so the shaking, coupled with Mexico City being on an ancient lake bed, proved much more deadly.
After the 1985 disaster, construction codes were reviewed and stiffened. Today, Mexico’s construction laws are considered as strict as those in the United States or Japan.
After the quake hit, people in Mexico City streamed out of their homes in the dark, wearing nightclothes, standing amid apartment buildings, cafes and bars in upscale neighborhoods and dense warrens of the city’s working-class communities. In the Condesa area, neighbors watched in awe as power lines swayed alongside trees and buildings. In several neighborhoods, the power went out, though it was restored within an hour, at least in the wealthier parts of the capital.
For a city used to earthquakes, Thursday’s quake left a lasting impression on residents, for both its force and duration.
“The scariest part of it all is that if you are an adult, and you’ve lived in this city your adult life, you remember 1985 very vividly,” said Alberto Briseño, a 58-year-old bar manager in Condesa. “This felt as strong and as bad, but from what I see, we’ve been spared from major tragedy.”
“Now we will do what us Mexicans do so well: take the bitter taste of this night and move on,” he added.
Subduction zones ring the Pacific Ocean and are also found in other regions. They are responsible for the world’s largest earthquakes and most devastating tsunamis. The magnitude 9 earthquake off Japan in 2011 that led to the Fukushima nuclear disaster and the magnitude 9.1 quake in Indonesia in 2004 that spawned tsunamis that killed a quarter of a million people around the Indian Ocean are recent examples.
Those quakes each released about 30 times as much energy as the one in Mexico.
Mexico’s government issued a tsunami warning off the coast of Oaxaca and Chiapas after Thursday’s quake, but neither state appeared to have been adversely affected by waves. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the largest wave recorded on Mexico’s Pacific Coast measured less than four feet.

Researchers in Mexico unveiled the most detailed look yet at the genetics of Mexicans on Monday with the results showing significant diversity, a finding that could help point the way to customised drugs and identification of people prone to certain diseases.
Sixteen researchers led by Doctor Gerardo Jimenez-Sanchez studied the genes of 300 mestizos, people of mixed Indian and European background, from six states in Mexico, and one Indian population.
They found significant differences between the mestizos and such groups as Europeans, Africans and Asians.
The study, published in the scientific journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, was formally presented at the presidential residence in Mexico City on Monday.
President Felipe Calderon praised Mexican researchers for bringing the country into the small group of nations that have conducted such studies.
This is something that has only been achieved in countries like the United States, Japan and Great Britain, he said.
He added that such a map will help advance discoveries in preventive medicine and lower health care costs.
Jimenez said that the limited sample size is still a photograph that represents all Mexicans as well as serving as a tool for identifying genetic links across the Latin American region.
He also said that the results of the project could possibly yield practical applications within five years, and that genetic testing could help determine how Mexicans will react to certain medicines.
Researchers also believe that the map could help in future to learn, for example, why more Mexicans have died from the swine flu virus than any other population.
Using mathematical analysis, the researchers produced a map of the genetics of the different groups.
They found that the mestizo genome includes variations that stretch from Indian to European.
The mestizos studied were from Sonora, Zacatecas, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Veracruz and Yucatan.
In addition the research included 30 Zapotecos from Oaxaca.
They found genomes closer to Europeans in northern states and closer to American Indians in southern areas.
Indications of African ancestry were low in most areas, though a few individuals had high levels of African genes.
Mestizos from Yucatan were the only ones with a detectable Mayan influence.

Police fired tear gas and clashed for several hours Tuesday with teachers protesting a visit by President Felipe Calderon to the colonial city of Oaxaca.
The protests are reminiscent of unrest that paralyzed the southern city for five months in 2006 and left at least a dozen people dead.
The Section 22 teachers union said 20 protesters were injured during the running clashes, which lasted several hours. Police at the scene said five officers were hurt. Reporter Gildardo Mota of Radio Rama said he was struck on the left leg by a bullet.
The violence broke out in Oaxaca's main plaza as the teachers gathered to protest. The teachers threw rocks and hit police with sticks. Police fought tear gas. It was unclear who fired the live ammunition.
Oaxaca, the capital of the southern state by the same name, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Mexico because of its picturesque colonial center, Zapotec ruins and surrounding Indian villages known for their arts and crafts.
The protesters also torched a government vehicle and beat the Oaxaca state Public Safety Secretary Marco Tulio Lopez when he tried to call for calm outside the government offices.
Section 22 was the same union that began the 2006 protests. That upheaval began as a teachers strike to demand higher pay but quickly ballooned into a wider movement against then-Oaxaca Gov. Ulises Ruiz, who was accused of rigging his election.
Protesters seized the main plaza for months until federal forces moved in to clear them out.

Section 22 leaders said Tuesday they were protesting a decree that Calderon signed Monday giving parents tax breaks on private school tuition. The union leaders argue the measure undermines Mexico's already struggling public schools. They threatened more protests and roadblocks in response to the police crackdown.
Calderon completed his visit despite the protest, signing several agreements with the state government.

On September 8th 2017 one of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded in Mexico struck off the country's southern coast, toppling hundreds of buildings and sending panicked people fleeing into the streets in the middle of the night.
At least 60 people were reported dead.
The quake that hit minutes before midnight was strong enough to cause buildings to sway violently in the capital city more than 650 miles (1,000 kilometers) away.
The head of Mexico's civil defense agency confirmed the deaths of 45 people in the southern state of Oaxaca. Another 12 people died in Chiapas and three more in the Gulf coast state of Tabasco.
The extent of the destruction was still emerging. Hundreds of buildings collapsed or were damaged, power was cut at least briefly to more than 1.8 million people and authorities closed schools on Friday in at least 11 states to check them for safety.
The earthquake's impact was blunted somewhat by the fact that it was centered 100 miles (160.9 kilometres) offshore. It hit off Chiapas' Pacific coast, near the Guatemalan border with a magnitude of 8.1 -equal to Mexico's strongest quake of the past century. It was slightly stronger than the 1985 quake, the US Geological Survey said.

The Mexican city of Juchitan remains littered with rubble from last week's 8.1 magnitude earthquake, which killed at least 90 people across the southern part of the country.
Officials in Oaxaca and Chiapas states said thousands of houses and hundreds of schools had been damaged or destroyed.
Hundreds of thousands of people were reported to having no access to water.
In Asuncion Ixtaltepec, 15 kilometres from Juchitan, Benito Chinas looked at the ruins of his house. He has lost it all.
It's all fallen apart, this one and that one, said 81-year-old Chinas. Everything, everything has fallen.
Some Juchitecos seeking solace trekked through the destruction to find an open-air Mass on September 10th since many of the churches were either damaged or left vacant until they could be checked.
On the evening of September 10th, Bishop Oscar Campos Contreras conducted Mass for about 200 people on an open-air basketball court next to a collapsed school and directly in front of the St. Vicente Ferrer church which was heavily damaged, losing one bell tower and very nearly the other.
Local officials said they had counted nearly 800 aftershocks of all sizes since the big quake, and the U.S. Geological Survey counted nearly 60 with a magnitude of 4.5 or greater.
Help was slower to arrive in Union Hidalgo, a town of about 20,000 people about 30 minutes to the east.

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake stunned central Mexico on September 19th, killing at least 119 people as buildings collapsed in plumes of dust.
Thousands fled into the streets in panic, and many stayed to help rescue those trapped.
Scores of buildings collapsed into mounds of rubble or were severely damaged in in densely populated parts of Mexico City and nearby states.
Authorities have s aid that buildings collapsed at 44 places in the capital alone and that at least 30 had died in Mexico City, and officials in Morelos, just to the south, said 54 had died there.
The quake is the deadliest in Mexico since a 1985 quake on the same date killed thousands. It came less than two weeks after another powerful quake left 90 dead in the country's south.
At one site, scores of people and rescue workers pulled rubble from a collapsed building searching for survivors with rescuers calling for silence so that they could listen for others who might be trapped.
Alarms blared and traffic stopped around the Angel of Independence monument on the iconic Reforma Avenue.

Oaxaca is world famous for its textiles. They are created using natural dyes and wool. The textile patterns mimic the design elements from the Mitla, an archeological site with distinctive geometric patterns, making them distinctive from any other textiles.
5. Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzman (7:36 - 8:00)
Glorious Baroque church found in Oaxaca City. It includes lavishly ornate interior. Construction started in the 16th Century but did not complete until the 17th Century. The town cathedral is witness to all the cultural activities taking place beneath its facade, including weddings and festivals.
6. Árbol del Tule (0:40 - 1:10)
Botanists estimate this tree to be 2,000 years old. It is considered the largest and oldest tree in the world with a perimeter at 139 feet in circumference. It didn't even fit into one picture frame!
7. Hierve de Agua (3:50 - 4:30)
One of the most surreal landscape I have ever seen is Hierve de Agua, found about two hours outside of the city. The name translates to place where the water boils, and contains non-thermal pools, and natural rock formations rising form the valley below including the main highlight, a petrified waterfall. It was created by minerals that pushed through limestone, depositing onto the mountain. You can hike to the waterfall or wade around in the mineral pools.
8. Zocalo and Basilica of Our Lady of Solitude (8:23 - 8:36)
The Zocalo is the central plaza in Oaxaca City that includes a Spanish Baroque style church, Basilica of our Lady of Solitude. The Zocalo is connected by a pedestrian walkway to the other plaza, Santo Domingo. Along the Zocalo are many street shops and markets.
9. Mitla (2:30 - 3:46)
One of the famous archeology sites which translates to place of the dead. Mitla was an ancient burial and funeral ritual site for the Zapotec people, one of Oaxaca's indigenous groups. It includes one of the few surviving temples, noted for its distinctive small tile mosaic-like geometric patterns in the facade.
10. Monte Albán (6:00 - 7:28)
Monte Albán is so amazing, that it deserves its own blog post (coming soon). It is a UNESCO World Heritage site found about 20 minutes outside of the city. It is the first great city of Mesoamerica and dates back to 500 or 600 BCE. The Zapotec people leveled the mountains by hand (no metal tools or even wheels) to build their ceremonial center known as Monte Albán here, complete with temples or astronomical and religious purposes. Mitla and Monte Albán give you an idea of just how advanced this indigenous civilization was in its heyday.

Powerful 7.2 quake rocks buildings in Mexico, minor damage reported.
A 7.2 magnitude quake rocked Mexico on Friday, a prolonged rumble that the government said had caused minor damage to buildings in the southern state of Oaxaca, but with no preliminary reports of deaths.
The epicenter was about 90 miles (145 km) from Pacific coast surfer resort Puerto Escondido in the southern state of Oaxaca and had a depth of 15.3 miles (24.6 km), according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Both the south of Mexico and the capital are still reeling from earthquakes that caused widespread damage in September and the powerful, sustained shaking on Friday caused widespread panic.
Patricia Gutierrez, a 66-year-old English teacher, was taking a nap with her 11-month-old granddaughter, Juliet, when she heard an earthquake alarm in Mexico City.
“She recognized the sound. When I opened my eyes, I saw her eyes in terror. Her eyes were wide, like plates. She didn’t say anything,” Gutierrez said of her granddaughter.
Gutierrez managed to leave her ground floor apartment before the quake began. “I left the phone and everything except for my shoes and the baby,” she said.
Authorities said no deaths had been reported nationally.
BRICKS AND RUBBLE
Interior Minister Alfonso Navarrete said there was some superficial damage to buildings in Oaxaca, and the state’s governor said about 100,000 people had lost power.
In the town of Pinotepa Nacional near the quake’s epicenter, a photo obtained from Oaxaca’s civil protection agency showed a single-story building where a portion of the brick façade crumbled into the street.
Other images in the media appeared to show bricks and rubble fallen from buildings, and products tumbling off shelves in a supermarket.
National oil firm Pemex said its installations were in order, including its biggest refinery 240 miles (386 km) from the epicenter. A hotel operator in Puerto Escondido said his property had no damage.
Tremors were felt as far away as Guatemala to the south.
In Mexico City, tall buildings swayed for more than a minute as seismic alarms sounded, with older structures in the chic Condesa neighborhood knocking into each other, and some cracks appearing in plaster and paintwork.
The Popocatepetl volcano south of the capital sent a kilometer-high column of ash into the sky, said Mexico’s disaster prevention agency.
Two young men standing by a building that collapsed in a Sept. 19 earthquake were still hugging minutes after the tremor. People crowded in the streets, one lady in her pajamas.
Trees, overhead cables and cars swayed, and a fire truck raced down the street.
Guadalupe Martinez, a 64-year-old retiree, said she was still shaking from shock. But the quake was a far cry from the tremors that struck Mexico in September, Martinez said.
“This time it was strong, but it did not jump up and down,” she said.

(10 Sep 2017) Life for many Mexicans has moved outdoors in the quake-shocked city of Juchitan, where a third of the homes are reported uninhabitable and repeated aftershocks have scared people away from many structures still standing.
The city on Sunday was littered with rubble from Thursday night's magnitude 8.1 earthquake, which killed at least 90 people across southern Mexico — at least three dozen of them in Juchitan itself.
Officials in Oaxaca and Chiapas states said thousands of houses and hundreds of schools had been damaged or destroyed.
Hundreds of thousands of people were reported to be without water service.
Many people continued to sleep outside, fearful of more collapses, as strong aftershocks continued to rattle the town, including a magnitude 5.2 jolt early Sunday.
Some Juchitecos seeking solace trekked through the destruction to find an open-air Mass on Sunday since many of the churches were either damaged or left vacant until they could be checked.
Along a street lined with obliterated homes, the Rev. Ranulfo Pacheco delivered a homily to a couple dozen people on wooden pews that had been toted into the patio in front of his gray concrete Our Lord of Esquipulas church.
He said many were fearful of celebrating inside the structure, which from the street seemed undamaged.
Local officials said that the death toll in his state had risen to 71, while officials have reported 19 killed in Chiapas and Tabasco states and that they had counted nearly 800 aftershocks of all sizes since the big quake, and the US Geological Survey counted nearly 60 with a magnitude of 4.5 or greater.
Teams of soldiers and federal police armed with shovels and sledgehammers fanned out across neighborhoods to help demolish damaged buildings. Other groups distributed boxes of food.

Live Footage Of 7.2 Mexican Earthquake
A powerful earthquake struck Mexico on Friday (April 18), shaking buildings in the capital and sending people running out into the street.
The magnitude 7.2 quake was centred in the southwestern state of Guerrero, close to the Pacific beach resort of Acapulco, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said.
Televisa TV station was airing a live national morning news programme when the quake began. As lights were shaking, the presenter told audiences to stay calm and warned that the tremor was getting stronger.
The news programme also cut to a view of a street in the capital's Iztapalapa borough during the powerful earthquake, where residents were staging an annual religious Passion Play and procession as the quake struck.
So far, no deaths have been reported and damage is still being assessed.
Many Mexico City residents evacuated offices and buildings as pipes and powerlines shook across the capital.
We were on the fourth floor, the last floor of the building where I work. It felt horrible. I waited a while to see if the earthquake would pass, but it didn't. I work in a call centre and we have pipes above us and they were moving like crazy. The lights went out and we weren't allowed to go down the stairs. So we tried to go down the stairs but we couldn't. Everyone was stuck standing still. We all thought the building was going to fall. The truth is that it was very strong, said call centre worker Damiana Duran.
Amateur footage published on Instagram shows what appears to be a wall collapsing in the city's older borough of Juarez.
Mexico's government stated no immediate reports of damage and the U.S. Pacific Warning Centre said it did not expect the quake to trigger a significant tsunami.
The USGS said the quake was centred some 37 km (23 miles) north of the municipality of Tecpan de Galeana in Guerrero with a depth of about 24 km (15 miles).
Federal civil protection officials said the quake was felt across at least a half-dozen states, including Puebla and Tlaxcala in central eastern Mexico.
Government officials having been scouting the area checking for possible damage.
We are doing a general patrol of the zones, we are from the Secretary of Social Development, to see what has been affected. We are in this zone to see collapse of the wall and to check the building, said local government official Claudia Martinez.
A devastating 8.1-magnitude earthquake in 1985 killed thousands of people in Mexico City. In March 2012, a 7.4 magnitude quake hit Mexico but did not cause major damage.
Mexican President Visits Quake-stricken Chiapas, Stresses Reconstruction
Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto on Monday paid a visit to the state of Chiapas to reassure residents and speak of the government's plan for post-disaster relief work as the death toll rose to 96 after a 8.2-magnitude earthquake devastated the region.
The Mexican government will properly shelter those who lost their homes, and unite all forces in the country for reconstruction, according to the president.
The most important task at present is to make arrangements for these displaced people, then to focus on reconstruction. I wish to unite all Mexicans, including the strength of large construction companies, so that we can rebuild our home as soon as possible and make up for losses caused by the earthquake, said Pena Nieto.
The government shall spend all-out efforts despite the difficulties, added the president.
One major difficulty is that the disaster-affected areas scatter in different parts, so we must first learn the specific location and number of people affected by the earthquake. This week we plan to let the federal government and regional institutions to jointly set hands on these works, he said.
It was the second time for Pena Nieto to visit the disaster-stricken region since his Friday tour to the hard-hit Juchitan City in the state of Oaxaca. He also called a cabinet meeting on Sunday, during which he asked all cabinet members to pitch in with aid and recovery efforts.
I asked all of them to go out to work. None of them will be in their offices today as they are bound to work outside, either in Chiapas or Oaxaca, basically half and half, he said.
Around 2.5 million people are waiting for aid and shelter after the massive earthquake hit the southern coast of Mexico on Sept 7.
The Mexican Ministry of Finance has said the government will grant temporary tax exemptions to victims of the deadly quake. Those affected will also be able to deduct expenses on new fixed assets, such as a building, property, plant, and equipment.

Assailants stormed San Vicente Camalote, a rural town in southern Mexico, killing 13 people on Tuesday, including a rancher, who according to local government, had links to a drug cartel.
The bodies on Wednesday were being kept under armed guard at the local mortuary, in Tuxtepec, in Oaxaca state.
Police sources said that the hooded assailants kidnapped several police officers at a checkpoint in San Vicente Camalote, before bursting into a house where they killed rancher Alfonso Maciel and five other people, including three police officers.
The gunmen then moved on to Maciel''s ranch, where they killed four people, including three of his sons.
One of the sons was a minor.
As they fled, the gunmen killed three local policemen who tried to stop them.
One policeman was reported missing and possibly kidnapped by the gunmen, and state police were sent to patrol the town.
Maciel apparently had links to a drug cartel, the state government said in a statement.
The government said the 30 to 40 attackers travelled in five or six vehicles with license plates from the neighbouring state of Veracruz, territory of the Gulf cartel.
Oaxaca, a Pacific coast state with a picturesque colonial capital, ancient Zapotec ruins and pristine beaches, is considered a drug trafficking corridor, although violence has not risen to the levels plaguing Mexico''s northern border region.
The US government warned its citizens on Wednesday against travelling to the northern Mexico border state of Tamaulipas, where shootouts killed 19 people the previous three days.
Calderon angrily denied the accusation of favoritism Wednesday.
