Google street view timelapse. New Zealand State Highway 6 (NZ, South Island)
State Highway 6 is a major New Zealand State Highway. It extends from the northeastern corner of the South Island across the top of the island, then down the length of the island, initially along the West Coast and then across the Southern Alps through inland Otago and finally across the Southland Plains to the island's south coast. Distances are measured from north to south.
The highway is the longest single highway in the country, though it is shorter than the combined totals of the two highways that comprise State Highway 1, SHs 1N and 1S.
For most of its length SH6 is a two-lane single carriageway, except for 5.4 km of dual carriageway in Invercargill, and passing lanes in Invercargill and Nelson, with at-grade intersections and property accesses, both in rural and urban areas. Roundabouts are common in major towns, with traffic signals only found in Invercargill, Richmond, and Nelson, with signals controlling the Kawarau Bridge in Queenstown and Fern Arch near Westport.

Severe Weather in Westland, South Island New Zealand
River and lake levels were continuing to rise in the Wakatipu, Wanaka, and Hawea lakes catchments. Lakes Wanaka and Wakatipu are high and rising. Both were now expected to peak around midday tomorrow, a spokesman said.
Lake Wakatipu was at 311.01 metres and rising, and was expected to peak at 311.4m, which could cause minor flooding in low-lying parts of Queenstown.
Lake Wanaka was at 279.3m and rising and was expected to peak at 280m. It could also cause flooding of low-lying areas around the Wanaka waterfront, the spokesman said.
All South Island roads closed by slips and washouts today were expected to reopen tomorrow.
The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) acting southern region director Ian Duncan said contractors had cleared and temporarily repaired the three washouts on State Highway 6 near Makarora, and were working on two sizeable slips in the Haast Pass area.
Good progress has been made clearing these slips - one at Pivot Creek, 10kms north of the Haast Pass summit and the other near the Gates of Haast - and work is continuing in an attempt to get the road opened later tonight.
Mr Duncan said State Highway 94 from Lumsden to Te Anau would reopen tomorrow morning.
A slip 5kms west of Klondyke Corner closed State Highway 73 from Cass to Arthur's Pass for much of the day. About 500 cubic metres of debris fell onto the road and contractors were on site clearing the road.
SH 94 Milford Road, from Hollyford to Milford Sound, had reopened but only for bus convoys carrying cruise ship passengers back to Milford Sound and bringing out walkers from the Milford Track. It remained closed to all other traffic until tomorrow morning.

Taupo/New Zealand:
The North Island (Māori: Te Ika-a-Māui) is one of the two main islands of New Zealand, separated from the slightly larger but much less populous South Island by Cook Strait. The island is 113,729 square kilometres (43,911 sq mi) in area, making it the world's 14th-largest island. It has a population of 3,393,900 (June 2012 estimate).
Twelve main urban areas (half of them officially cities) are in the North Island. Listing from north to south, they are Whangarei, Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Rotorua, Gisborne, New Plymouth, Napier, Hastings, Whanganui, Palmerston North, and Wellington, the capital, located at the south-west extremity of the island. Approximately 77% of New Zealand's population lives in the North Island.
Although the island has been known as the North Island for many years, the New Zealand Geographic Board has found that, along with the South Island, it has no official name. The board intends to make North Island the island's official name, along with an alternative Māori name.Although several Māori names have been used, Māori Language Commissioner Erima Henare sees Te Ika-a-Māui as the most likely choice. In April 2013, the board announced it would seek the public's input before making any official changes to the island's name.
In prose, the two main islands of New Zealand are called the North Island and the South Island, with the definite articles. It is normal to use the preposition in rather than on, for example Hamilton is in the North Island, my mother lives in the North Island. Maps, headings, tables and adjectival expressions use North Island without the.
According to Māori mythology, the North and South Islands of New Zealand arose through the actions of the demigod Māui. Māui and his brothers were fishing from their canoe (the South Island) when he caught a great fish and pulled it from the sea. While he was not looking his brothers fought over the fish and chopped it up. This great fish became the North Island and thus a Māori name for the North Island is Te Ika-a-Māui (The Fish of Māui). The mountains and valleys are believed to have been formed as a result of Māui's brothers' hacking at the fish. Until the early 20th Century, an alternative Māori name for the North Island was Aotearoa. In present Māori usage, Aotearoa is a collective name for New Zealand as a whole.Wikipedia

Riding through Lewis Pass (Hwy 7 North), Hanmer Springs, Waiau River, Reefton, Hwy 6 along Buller River and ends at Westport.
State Highway 6. The Buller Gorge.
State Highway 6. The Buller Gorge, heading north.
The Buller Gorge is a gorge located in the northwest of the South Island of New Zealand. The Buller River flows through the deep canyon between Murchison and Westport. Land Information New Zealand lists two sections for the gorge, Upper Buller Gorge and Lower Buller Gorge. State Highway 6 runs alongside, but considerably above, the river through the gorge. The Stillwater - Westport Line railway also runs part way thru through the gorge .
New Zealand's longest swingbridge at 110 m length spans the Buller River 14 km west of Murchison. That area also offers rides on a zip-line across the gorge as well as several short bush walks.

New Zealand's Kaikoura Coast, State Highway 1 - Train Chasing & Earthquake Repair Work
New Zealand’s State Highway 1 between Christchurch and Picton joins the Kaikoura Coast near the tiny settlement of Oaro, this video starts shortly after joining the coast at Goose Bay. For much of the journey the road and rail are perched on man-made ledges cut into the cliff face where the Seaward Kaikoura Mountain Range meets the Pacific Ocean, along the way we cross braided rivers, climb over the Inland Kaikoura and Richmond Mountain Ranges before dropping into Picton where we board a ferry bound for North Island. The road and rail routes are open to traffic, but repairs are going to take many years to complete.
The 2016 Kaikoura earthquake was a magnitude 7.8 earthquake in the South Island of New Zealand that occurred two minutes after midnight on 14 November 2016. It is hard to describe the devastation, to get an idea of the aftermath please click on this link -

Greymouth, New Zealand
The town is located at the mouth of the Grey River, on a narrow coastal plain close to the foot of the Southern Alps. In clear weather, Aoraki/Mount Cook can be clearly seen to the south from near the town. The mouth of the river divides the town into three areas: Blaketown, close to the river's mouth on the south bank; Karoro, to the southeast, separated from Blaketown by a series of small estuarine lakes; and Cobden, formerly a separate town, on the river's north bank.
Greymouth is on State Highway 6, which connects it with Hokitika in the south and Westport in the north. It also stands at the terminus of State Highway 7, which runs through Dobson and Reefton, eventually reaching North Canterbury and its junction with State Highway 1 at Waipara (55 km north of Christchurch) via Lewis Pass. Highway 73 is accessed just 20 kilometers south of Greymouth, which is the most direct route to or from Christchurch. The town is also the western terminus of the Midland line from Christchurch. Large coal trains often operate from Greymouth on this line to Christchurch. The famous TranzAlpine train also terminates at Greymouth. The Greymouth Airport is located conveniently only 1.9 km south of the centre of the town.
