Which state is called the land of the 10,000 lakes? Hot summers and very very cold winters? Find out about the rivalry of the twin cities, favorite outdoor sports and other interesting facts from Minnesota. #50states #MN
Transcript:
Hello, my name is Robert Mevissen and I'm an intern working in the Political Economic section of the American Embassy here in Vienna. I am from the great state of Minnesota, which is located in the middle of the United States and shares its northern border with Canada.
Because Minnesota is as far away from the ocean as the middle of Siberia and quite far north, we have very hot summers and very very cold winters. Temperatures can range from 46 degrees Celsius in the summer to minus 51 degrees in the winter.
Despite the extreme weather, we Minnesotans love to be outside. During the summer we go canoeing, camping, biking and swimming. And in the winter we can have a meter or more of snow on the ground, so we like to go sledding and cross-country skiing, as well as playing a Canadian sport called Broomball. But we especially enjoy activities on or near water.
The slogan for our state is the land of 10,000 lakes and while we aren't near the ocean, our lakes provide more shoreline than California, Hawaii and Florida combined! These lakes were actually formed millions of years ago by huge glaciers scraping the region's landscape. But we Minnesotans like to tell the legend of Paul Bunyan - a giant lumberjack- whose enormous footsteps formed the lakes while he wandered around lost in a blinding snowstorm with his pet ox, Babe.
The large number of lakes in our state plays an important role for the people and history of Minnesota.
The state's name itself comes from the American Indian tribes who lived there- Minnesota translates from the Dakota language as sky-tinted or sky-colored water. These tribes hunted and fished along the lakes, and some of their most important activities and ways of life still influence Minnesotans today.
For example, tribes harvested wild rice from the northern lakes, drilled holes in the ice to go fishing in the winter, as well as collected sap from maple trees to make syrup. When I was growing up my family always made wild rice soup throughout the winter to keep us warm. Fish fries are also common social gatherings in Minnesota.
Because Minnesota is heavily forested in the north, more than half of Minnesota's population lives in or around the Twin Cities down in the south. The term twin refers to both the state capital Saint Paul and its sister city Minneapolis. Both cities are along the Mississippi river. For many years, the two cities were bitter rivals and as a result, all of our sports teams today like the Minnesota Twins, Vikings and Timberwolves have to be Minnesotan and cannot be named for either city.
Historically, both cities were settled by different immigrant groups from Europe. Swedes, Norwegians and Finns influenced the development of Minneapolis. Today the city appears much more modern with huge skyscrapers, famous music halls, and an abundance of theaters. Saint Paul, on the other hand, was settled by German, Irish and French immigrants and it has remained much more traditional with late Victorian-era European-looking architecture.
Now that you know more about Minnesota, come and discover it yourself! Whether you love exploring the great outdoors on your bike and in your canoe, or if you prefer visiting art museums and attending orchestra concerts, there is something for everyone here. You know you've arrived when you hear the friendly Minnesotan exclamations Oofda! and Ya sure you betcha!

Here is a video of Minneapolis !
Minneapolis, nicknamed City of Lakes and the Mill City, is the county seat of Hennepin County, the largest city in the U.S. state of Minnesota, and the 48th largest in the United States. Its name is attributed to the city's first schoolteacher, who combined mni, the Dakota word for water, and polis, the Greek word for city.
Minneapolis lies on both banks of the Mississippi River, just north of the river's confluence with the Minnesota River, and adjoins Saint Paul, the state's capital. Known as the Twin Cities, Minneapolis-St. Paul is the 16th-largest metropolitan area in the U.S., with 3.5 million residents. The Metropolitan Council estimated the city's population in 2009 as 386,691.
The city is abundantly rich in water with over twenty lakes and wetlands, the Mississippi river, creeks and waterfalls, many connected by parkways in the Chain of Lakes and the Grand Rounds Scenic Byway. It was once the world's flour milling capital and a hub for timber, and today is the primary business center between Chicago and Seattle. Named America's most literate city, it has cultural organizations that draw creative people and audiences to the city for theater, visual art, writing, and music. The community's diverse population has a long tradition of charitable support through progressive public social programs, as well as private and corporate philanthropy.
The region is second only to New York City in live theater per capital and is the third-largest theater market in the U.S. after New York and Chicago, supporting the Illusion, Jungle, Mixed Blood, Penumbra, Mu Performing Arts, Bedlam Theatre, the Brave New Workshop, the Minnesota Dance Theatre, Red Eye, Skewed Visions, Theater Latté Da, In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre, Lundstrum Center for the Performing Arts, and the Children's Theatre Company. The city is home to Minnesota Fringe Festival, the United States' largest nonjuried performing arts festival. French architect Jean Nouvel designed a new three stage complex for the Guthrie Theater, a prototype alternative to Broadway founded in Minneapolis in 1963. Minneapolis purchased and renovated the Orpheum, State, and Pantages Theatres vaudeville and film houses on Hennepin Avenue now used for concerts and plays. Eventually, a fourth renovated theater joined the Hennepin Center for the Arts to become the Cowles Center for Dance and the Performing Arts, to be completed in 2011 and a home to more than one dozen performing arts groups and a provider of Web-based art education.
The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, built in 1915 in south central Minneapolis is the largest art museum in the city with 100,000 pieces in its permanent collection. A new wing designed by Michael Graves was completed in 2006 for contemporary and modern works and more gallery space. The Walker Art Center sits atop Lowry Hill, near downtown, and doubled its size with an addition in 2005 by Herzog & de Meuron and is continuing its expansion to 15 acres (6.1 ha) with a park designed by Michel Desvigne across the street from the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. The Weisman Art Museum, designed by Frank Gehry for the University of Minnesota, opened in 1993. An addition, also designed by Gehry, is expected to open in 2011.

Minnesota Drive In Minute
2010RoadTripUSA. Part 56. Minnesota Drive In Minute. September 2010. Music by Raymond Scott.
Taylors Falls is a city in Chisago County, Minnesota, United States, located at the junction of U.S. Route 8 and Minnesota State Highway 95. The population was 1011 at the 2005 census.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.0 square miles (10.4 km²), of which, 3.7 square miles (9.6 km²) of it is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km²) of it (7.69%) is water.
Taylors Falls is located adjacent to St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin at the Dalles of the St. Croix River, an area of forested bluffs and high cliffs. The first interstate state park in the United States, aptly named Interstate Park, was jointly founded by the states of Minnesota and Wisconsin in 1895 and straddles the border of the two states immediately south of the city.(wikipedia)
The Drive-In Restaurant, located on Bench Street in Taylor's Falls, will be celebrating its 53rd anniversary this summer. The Drive-In nurtures fond memories of that golden era, with carhops, 50's music, root beer in frosted mugs, and good old-fashioned hamburgers.
When Allan Anderson opened his Drive-Inn on July 5, 1956, James Dean was starring in the 50's classic Rebel Without a Cause at the St. Croix Auditorium Theatre. A Drive-Inn restaurant was a new concept and the idea was intriguing for the Anderson's, who were intent on making it a family business.
When the Drive-Inn first opened, customers were not quite sure what to do! It wasn't long before they learned where to park their cars and how to order from the carhops. Inside workers poured the root beer into glass mugs while cooks fried the hamburgers. A small root beer cost 5¢, a large 10¢ and hamburgers were 25¢.
The large rotating root beer mug sign was installed in 1963. It was purchased from a Hastings Frostop Drive-In that had gone out of business. The giant classic rotating mug still greets guests today!
The Drive-In was closed for a year in 1987 and purchased by the sister and brother team of Gail and Wade Vitalis in 1988. This new family breathed life into the Drive-In, re-making it as The Drive-In Restaurant with a theme which reflected the 50's era. Customers were once again greeted by carhops wearing poodle skirts while 50s music played in the back ground. Guests could drink ice cold root beer from a frosty cold mug and get hand-packed burgers on fresh bakery buns.
In 1993, Wade and his wife, Carol Vitalis bought The Drive-In Restaurant and added an 18-hole adventure mini-golf course featuring waterfalls, ponds and challenging multi-level holes. It was named Adventure Falls Mini-Golf. A club house was added to the Adventure Falls mini-golf site. The buildings siding and interior was constructed entirely from recycled barn wood.
Wade and Carol Vitalis and their three kids still operate the family business in much the same fashion the Anderson family did in 1956. It is a very popular destination for families looking to eat great food, do some mini-golfing and enjoy the St. Croix River.
The greater than life American experience of eating in your car, being waited on by a car hop and drinking homemade root beer still lives on at the Drive-In Restaurant in Taylor's Falls. Our family invites your family to be a part of this history!(taylorsfalls)

Kansas City is the largest city in the U.S. state of Missouri. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city had an estimated population of 491,918 in 2018, making it the 38th most-populous city in the United States. It is the central city of the Kansas City metropolitan area, which straddles the Kansas–Missouri state line. Kansas City was founded in the 1830s as a Missouri River port at its confluence with the Kansas River coming in from the west. On June 1, 1850, the town of Kansas was incorporated; shortly after came the establishment of the Kansas Territory. Confusion between the two ensued and the name Kansas City was assigned to distinguish them soon after.
Sitting on Missouri's western boundary with Kansas, with Downtown near the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers, the modern city encompasses some 319.03 square miles (826.3 km2), making it the 23rd largest city by total area in the United States. Most of the city lies within Jackson County, but portions spill into Clay, Cass, and Platte counties. Along with Independence, one of its major suburbs, it serves as one of the two county seats of Jackson County. Other major suburbs include the Missouri cities of Blue Springs and Lee's Summit and the Kansas cities of Overland Park, Olathe, and Kansas City.
The city is composed of several neighborhoods, including the River Market District in the north, the 18th and Vine District in the east, and the Country Club Plaza in the south. Kansas City is known for its long tradition of jazz music and culture, especially theater – the city was the center of the Vaudevillian Orpheum circuit in the 1920s. It is also noted for its cuisine, including its distinctive Kansas City-style barbecue, and its craft breweries.

Kevin Kling at the Minnesota State Fair
Kevin Kling is a humorist and writer who lives in Minnesota. Most of his stories are about life in Minnesota, a unique state among the 50 states in the U.S. because of its climate (it's really cold in the winter) and its Scandinavian and German ancestry. In this video Kevin is describing the experience every child in the northern United States cherishes--waking up to find there's no school because of an overnight snowstorm.
I subtitled this because he talks really fast, but it's good listening practice for people who are learning American English.
