UK - The Most Regular Steam Service in Britain, Fort William 5/6/2018
A family holiday in the Scottish Highlands just had to include the briefest of visits to Fort William to see the regular steam service between there and the fishing port of Mallaig.
Through the summer months the steam hauled service runs under the name The Jacobite, 7 days a week, twice daily - there and back - and, so, represents easily the most regular mainline steam hauled service in the UK, if not the world. The service completes the 90 mile return journey along a mainline used by diesel service trains. Two steam locomotives are required to fulfill the relatively intensive service.
In this brief clip, we see ex.LMS Black Five 4-6-0 number 45157 departing Fort William with the afternoon train to Mallaig. The locomotive, appropriately, carries a blue painted smokebox number plate, a common feature of steam locomotives based in Scotland during the working days of the 50's and 60's.
