Bruges, Belgium - Intercity Train Arrives in Bruges (2018)
Inter-city rail services are express passenger train services that cover longer distances than commuter or regional trains.
There is no precise definition of inter-city rail; its meaning may vary from country to country. Most broadly, it can include any rail services that are neither short-distance commuter rail trains within one city area, nor slow regional rail trains calling at all stations and covering local journeys only. Most typically, an inter-city train is an express train with limited stops and comfortable carriages to serve long-distance travel.
Inter-city rail sometimes provides international services. This is most prevalent in Europe, due to the close proximity of its 50 countries in a 10,180,000 square kilometre (3,930,000 sq mi) area.[citation needed] Eurostar and EuroCity are examples of this. In many European countries the word InterCity or Inter-City is an official brand name for a network of regular-interval, relatively long-distance train services that meet certain criteria of speed and comfort. This use of the term appeared in the United Kingdom in the 1960s and has been widely imitated.
Bruges is the capital and largest city of the province of West Flanders in the Flemish Region of Belgium, in the northwest of the country.
The area of the whole city amounts to more than 13,840 hectares, including 1,075 hectares off the coast, at Zeebrugge (from Brugge aan zee,[2] meaning Bruges by the Sea). The historic city centre is a prominent World Heritage Site of UNESCO. It is oval in shape and about 430 hectares in size. The city's total population is 117,073 (1 January 2008), of whom around 20,000 live in the city centre. The metropolitan area, including the outer commuter zone, covers an area of 616 km2 (238 sq mi) and has a total of 255,844 inhabitants as of 1 January 2008.
Along with a few other canal-based northern cities, such as Amsterdam, it is sometimes referred to as the Venice of the North. Bruges has a significant economic importance, thanks to its port, and was once one of the world's chief commercial cities. Bruges is well known as the seat of the College of Europe, a university institute for European studies.

Zand Square Bruges : Gateway for visitors to Brugge
The main road to Bruges leads to this square with a huge underground car park beneath the Square the centre of Bruges is a short walk from Zand Square, Bruges Central Station and Coach Station is also not far.
.
On this square you'll find the lovely fountain and sculptures by Stefaan Depuydt and Livia Canestraro (1985- 86). There are four groups around the fountain to look for recording separate histories from Brugge' past. The fisherman and his companions symbolise the secular ties between Brugge and the sea (pic 1) while cyclists (pic 2) pedal beneath the watchful gaze of the popular local heroes Tijl Uilenspiegel and his friend Nele.
The third shot is the female group representing the Felmish cities of Antwerp, Brugge, Ghent and Courtrai while the last one to look for if you're there is the evocation of the polders, the low countries that are mentioned in the songs of Jaques Brel.
And last but not least you will meet the Mermaid of Bruges.
