Winchester is a city in the county of Hampshire, on the edge of England's South Downs National Park. It’s known for medieval Winchester Cathedral, with its 17th-century Morley Library, the Winchester Bible and a Norman crypt. Nearby are the ruins of Wolvesey Castle and the Winchester City Mill, a working 18th-century corn mill. The Great Hall of Winchester Castle houses the medieval round table linked to King Arthur.
Winchester is a city and the county town of Hampshire, England. The city of Winchester lies at the heart of the wider City of Winchester, a local government district, and is located at the western end of the South Downs National Park, along the course of the River Itchen. Winchester is situated 61 miles (98 km) south-west of London and 13.6 miles (21.9 km) from Southampton, its closest city.
Winchester developed from the Roman town of Venta Belgarum, which in turn developed from an Iron Age oppidum. Winchester's major landmark is Winchester Cathedral, one of the largest cathedrals in Europe, with the distinction of having the longest nave and overall length of all Gothic cathedrals in Europe. The city is home to the University of Winchester and Winchester College, the oldest public school in the United Kingdom still to be using its original buildings.
Winchester is situated on a bed of cretaceous lower chalk with small areas of clayey and loamy soil, inset with combined clay and rich sources of Fuller's earth. Aside from the city centre, there are several suburbs and neighbourhoods within the city, including:
Hyde
Abbotts Barton
Fulflood
Weeke
Winnall
Highcliffe
Stanmore
Upper Stanmore
Lower Stanmore
Teg Down
Badger Farm
Oliver's Battery
St. Cross
Bar End
Harestock
Winchester is located near the M3 motorway and at the meeting of the A34, A31, A3090 and A272 roads. Once a major traffic bottleneck, the city still suffers from congestion at peak times. A Roman road originating in Salisbury called The Clarendon Way ends in Winchester. Winchester railway station is served by South West Trains trains from London Waterloo, Weymouth, Portsmouth and Southampton, as well as by CrossCountry between Bournemouth, and either Manchester or Newcastle via Birmingham.

This video starts with the train ride from London to Winchester. It covers a Baptist church and a Methodist church and then moves on to the cathedral. It covers the inside of the cathedral and some of the memorials there, especially ones relating to lines of the family genealogy. Nicholas Stanley's memorial is there with other members of the family, and it shows the family crest including the black martlet. From the cathedral it moves to the down town and Alfred the Great's statue. Another part of town contains a palace where, among other things, there are the round table and the coats of arms of pertinent people on the stained-glass windows. The video ends with the return trip to London.
Alfred the Great remains found?

King Alfred the Great is too straight, white and male
King Alfred the Great of Wessex laid the foundations for the formation of the English nation. He is the only English king with the title of Great and our current Queen is descended from him. However a professor of gender studies at an American university once opposed a statue of him being put up in New York because he was a straight, white male

Number 10: Who Was King Alfred?
There have been many Greats in history, and yet some are unfamiliar with King Alfred The Great. Well, he was born in 849 AD as the fifth son of King Aethelwulf, who had ruled for 20 years as the king of Wessex, which was the land of the Anglo-Saxons…one of the dominate factions in that time period.
Ironically enough, because he was the fifth son of the king, he was on the literal bottom of the totem pole in terms of being in line to rule. After all, in those times, as well as some kingdoms nowadays, the order of your birth would determine your eligibility to wear the crown. However, fortunately for Alfred, and the world at large, his brothers were all killed in Viking attacks, thus ensuring him the crown.
Yet, there were some other hurdles that he had to face. Mainly, one of his brothers had a son before he died, and technically, that nephew of Alfred's should've gotten the crown. So what changed? Well, the Pope came in and blessed Alfred, which was a major vote of confidence back in those days. Combine that with the will of the people, and you get the man who would be king.
But don't think that he inherited an easy go of things. Because he honestly didn't. He inherited a kingdom that was ripe with war from top to bottom, and many of his legends are built upon these battles.
Number 9: The Last King Of His Nation.
This title may seem a bit misleading, but I'll explain it. He was the last king of his own nation, but he wasn't the last of his kind. Before and during the reign of King Alfred The Great, the nation that would soon be called England was under constant siege by Vikings, and the Vikings were winning, but England was also split into seven separate kingdoms, which led to it’s own turmoil and political unrest among all of the Anglo-Saxons.
During the early years of his reign, Alfred had to fight against the Vikings multiple times, barely making it through the battles alive. And many times, he had to retreat in order to protect his people from annihilation.
Eventually, it got to the point that the entire Anglo-Saxon people were conquered by the Vikings. Well…all except for Alfred The Great and his kingdom. That's really not a position you would want to be in, and it led to him rethinking his strategy, as well as the armies and navies around him in order to combat the Viking threat. And combat it he did. Which is why he most definitely wasn't the last of his kind.
Number 8: Alfred The Wise.

Many kings have come and gone in the world, and all of them have had their own take on leadership. For Alfred The Great though, he pushed many things that many kings wouldn't have cared about. For example, he was big on education. He actually taught himself many things over his time, and made sure that his people were as educated as he was in many facets. Have you ever heard the phrase Latin is a forgotten language? Well, he's part of the reason for that. He didn't want Latin taught to the people, but English instead, which obviously played a big part in the world history to come.
Just as important though, his education led him to be a very level-headed leader, which I'm sure many nations then and now wish they had. He was one that always tried to think clearly, and rule justly. He made sure that his kingdom had what it needed to survive even in times of hardship. He made sure the quality of life for his people was above the norm. Or in other words, this king didn't put himself above the people just because of his status.
Number 7: Alfred The Spy.
There are many, MANY, legends about Alfred The Great, and many of them aren't true as I'll reveal to you later. But, some of them do tell a great tale about the king. Including how far he was willing to go in order to get stuff done. For example, one story tells that King Alfred wanted to infiltrate an enemy Viking camp. To do so, he dressed himself up as a minstrel, which is a singer who used different musical instruments to charm people, to get into the camp and get information on the soldiers.
It's said that he not only had a good voice, but that he used songs that he learned while he was a young boy to charm the Vikings. And it worked! Yeah, it actually worked. He was able to stay in the Vikings camp for multiple days without being noticed even once for the king that he was.
