CUBA: EXPLORING the OLDEST SQUARE in HAVANA, historic PLAZA DE ARMAS ????️
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go visit
Havana's oldest square which was laid out in the early 1520s, soon after the city's foundation, and was originally known as Plaza de Iglesia after a church that once stood on the site of the present-day Palacio de los Capitanes Generales.
In the center of the square, which is lined with royal palms and hosts a daily (except Sundays) secondhand book market, is a marble statue of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, the man who set Cuba on the road to independence in 1868. The statue replaced one of unpopular Spanish king Ferdinand VII in 1955.
Also of note, on the square's eastern aspect is the late 18th-century Palacio de los Condes de Santovenia, today the five-star Hotel Santa Isabel.
Cuba is a Caribbean island nation under communist rule. It has sugar-white beaches and is dotted with tobacco fields, which play a part in the production of the country's legendary cigars. The capital, Havana, is lined with pastel houses, 1950s-era cars and Spanish-colonial architecture in the 16th-century core, Old Havana. Salsa music plays in the dance clubs and cabaret shows are performed at the famed Tropicana.

Raul Castro heads up ceremony to honor Cuban leaders
Cuban President Raul Castro paid homage to the country's patriots at the 149th anniversary of the uprising that started the War of Independence (1868-1898) on the island. In the cemetery of Santa Ifigenia, in the eastern city of Santiago, Castro led the ceremony of burial of the remains of Carlos Manuel de Cespedes, known as the Father of the Homeland, and Mariana Grajales, mother of independence fighter Antonio Maceo.
The funeral monument of Céspedes, inaugurated in 1910 in its third burial, and Grajales' tomb, whose remains were brought from Jamaica and deposited in Santa Ifigenia in 1923, were transferred to the central area of the necropolis, inaugurated in 1868 and declared as a national monument in 1979.

Havana Cuba Tour via Cruise (4K)
See where we visited during our 2 day stay in Havana Cuba via a Holland America cruise in June 2018, while taking in the sights and sounds we experienced. As you can see in this vlog, we did our own walking tour, in addition to a horse carriage tour and one via a 1957 Chevrolet Be Air vintage car which didn't even have seat belts!
We started from the Havana cruise terminal Sierra Maestra- for a more in depth look, tips & helpful information such as money exchange, please see our Havana Cruise Port video here:
The places we visited included:
• Plaza de San Francisco (directly opposite of the cruise port)
• Plaza de Armas, the oldest Plaza of Havana where there is a statue of Carlos Manuel de Cespedes and the El Templete Temple where the city was founded in 1519
• Parque Luz Caballero where we took a 2 hour horse carriage tour
On the horse carriage hour we saw:
• Our cruise ship the Holland America Veendam
• The Russian Church called Our Lady of Kazan Orthodox Cathedral
• Parque Aracelo Iglesias
• Iglesia de Paula Catholic Church
• Revolution Plaza
• Almacenes San Jose Artisan's Market
• The Ferry Terminal that takes passengers across the canal
The ride was fine but in retrospect I would have done just a one hour tour instead of 2, as it took a while to get to Revolution Plaza via horse.
Afterwards we tried out some local Cuban food at a restaurant recommended by our Horse Carriage tour guide. For 25 CUC we ate Lobster in Cuban sauce and came with plantains, and a Mojito. The lobster was pretty good- though I believe we got overcharged because a minute after we left we saw the menu of a nearby restaurant selling the same dish for 12 CUC.
We then walked and visited:
• Plaza de la Catedral, where the impressive Catedral de la Virgen Maria is located
• Castillo de la Real Fuerza
• Cuban street art in the form of colorful graffiti and others by local artists
• Iglesia del Santo Angel Custodio church
• Museum of the Revolution
We then took a Vintage Car tour and saw:
• Maximo Gomez monument at Parque del Artires Del 71
• Tunel de la Habana
• The outdoors Military Museum
• Christ of Havana/El Cristo de La Habana
• Castillo De Los Tres Reyes Del Morro
Afterwards we walked and saw:
• Jose Marti statue at Plaza 13 de Marzo
• Victor Hugo house
• Bank of Nova Scotia building
• Hotel Ambos Mundos
• Mercaderes Street
• El Cubo Havana Modern Sewer Pumping Station
It was then back to the cruise ship for the end of day 1.
We then took a look at Havana after dark from our ship and you can see our footage in this video as well.
The next day we did our own walking tour and saw:
• Plaza Vieja (Old Town Square)
• Museum of Pharmacy Habanera
• Teniente Rey Street and a marketplace there, including a merchant selling super-cute puppies
• Teatro Marti Performing Arts Theater
• Saratoga Hotel
• El Capitolo, the former capitol building, where we took a break and did some people/car watching
• Parque de la Fraternidad/Fraternity Park
• Chinatown Gate
• Gran Teatro de La Habana/Great Theatre of Havana
• Havana Central Park where there is another statue of Jose Marti
• Gran Hotel Manzana & Cohiba Atmosphere Mall
• Granma Memorial which is an extension to the Revolution Museum
• Havana Police Headquarters Fort
• Cuba Street
• Empedrado Street
• Casa del Marques de Arcos & the Mural of Aristocrats directly opposite
• Palacio de los Capitanes Generales
We then headed back to the cruise terminal, ending our terrific 2 day visit in Havana! The architecture in Havana was very impressive, and the people were very friendly. Please feel free to comment and if you have any questions we're more than happy to answer!
