Sword Lake: In the Viewfinder
I made this video back in July 2007 to test out the features of my newly acquired Sony HVR-Z1 professional video camera.
This was my first ever venture into documentary making. I lived in Hanoi at the time, and most of my fondest moments was around the Sword Lake. Situated downtown, Sword Lake is to Hanoi what Central Park is to New York City. It is a great place to take a stroll, go for an afternoon coffee, or challenge strangers for a round of Chinese chess. That small tower in the middle of the lake is called Tháp Rùa, or Tortoise Tower. Sword Lake is situated at the very heart of the city, next to the Old Quarter and home to the burgeoning tourist industry, you can hardly miss it; unless you decide that lakes and towers are mundane and not worth your attention.
During the China-Vietnam conflict in 1400s, a Vietnamese general named Lê Lợi led the rebel force against the Chinese. Legend has it that he found a magic sword, which made him invincible. After defeating the Chinese army, a giant turtle arose from this lake to reclaim the sword, lending the name to the lake.
There live huge turtles in the lake, some can be as large as a square meter. They are all but extinct now, thanks to human influence and city development. On rare occasions when they resurface, people would drop whatever they were doing and go watching. It is said that the re-emergence of these giant turtles brings good fortune, just as Lê Lợi got his. The turtles would crawl onto the small islet to sunbathe. The islet itself started out as very small, but later on, as water level subsides, the islet grew in size.
During the French Occupation Era, Nguyễn Ngọc Kim, a rich Vietnamese officer for the colonial French built the Tortoise Tower on that islet, to be used as a tomb for his late father. Even though his plan didn't pan out as intended, the tower's construction was still completed in 1886. The 3-storey tower bears a resemblance of French Gothic architecture on the first and second storey, while keeping the top typical that of Vietnamese traditional architecture.
There is another tower built near the red bridge, which resembles like a brush, so people call it Tháp Bút (Brush Tower). When you look into its reflection in the water, it seems as if Brush Tower leans down, using the water's green color to write poems on the blue sky. Therefore the tower has become an icon for the importance of culture and education.
Today, Sword Lake is a favourite spot for long strolls, practicing Tai Chi Chuan, playing Chinese chess, or meeting place for young lovers. The lake can get quite misty in the early hours of morning, especially during winter, which gives it a strange, ethereal quality. It is an important part of Vietnam's history, because not only it is a symbol for peace (the returned sword) but also culture (the Brush Tower), and it still serves as a source of inspiration for many artists to this day.

The Ly Thai To statue at Ly Thai To Park - Tượng đài Lý Thái Tổ
Lý Thái Tổ is best known[citation needed] for relocating the imperial capital from Hoa Lư to Thăng Long (modern day Hà Nội) in 1010 AD. He is generally viewed as the founder of the city of Hà Nội. In 2010, the city of Hà Nội celebrated its 1000th anniversary and in honoring Lý Thái Tổ.
Although Hoa Lư was a strategic citadel surrounded by mountains and marshland that was difficult for invading armies to attack or conquer, Hoa Lư was geographically too small and difficult for commerce and urban development to flourish. Lý Công Uẩn, who had wished to implement civic development and economic growth within the realm, soon realized that Hoa Lư was not a suitable place for such aspirations. This prompted Lý Thái Tổ to move the capital to a more spacious landscaped settlement called Đại La, now Hà Nội. Đại La was an ideal location for the new capital since it was on flatland and surrounded by rivers and lakes, which was advantageous for transportation, commerce, and military mobilization. In 1010, he issued a royal decree called Edict on the Transfer of the Capital for moving the imperial capital from Hoa Lư to Đại La. While travelling from Hoa Lư to the imperial settlement, he claimed to have had a vision of a yellow dragon ascending which inspired him to change the new settlement's name from Đại La to Thăng Long which means Ascending Dragon. Lý Công Uẩn also built Trường An Citadel in the former capital Hoa Lư to further fortify the garrison for military defense and Thiên Đức Citadel in Cổ Pháp village as a tributary honor to his childhood home town.
Religion[edit]
Having begun life as a Buddhist monk, Lý Thái Tổ practiced Buddhism and promoted it as the national religion. As a result, he gave much support to the Buddhist clergy and institutions. He donated money to build pagodas throughout Đại Việt. Many citizens joined monastic institutions during this reign since he was a strong patron of the Buddhist religion. Clerical officials such as Nguyễn Đạo Thanh and Phạm Hạc were sent to China (Song Dynasty court) to study and bring back the sutra named Tam Tạng (Tripiṭaka) to Đại Việt.
Policies[edit]
During the reign of Lý Thái Tổ, the Song Dynasty was pre-occupied with maintaining internal stability and still recovering from previous defeats or skirmishes with the Liao and Xi Xia empires. Đại Việt, as a result, was mostly left alone and political relations between the two kingdoms revived. Lý Thái Tổ sent many envoys to the Song court and demanded that its government officially recognize Đại Việt's status as a vassal independent kingdom rather than an autonomous Chinese province of Song. The Emperor of the Song Dynasty consented and sent envoys in return to be formally entitled Lý Thái Tổ as the emperor of Đại Việt superseding the title Lord of Giao Chỉ, In turn, some vassal kingdoms of Đại Việt to the south such as Champa (modern-day central Vietnam) and Chenla (modern-day Cambodia) brought annual tributes to Đại Việt, allowing Lý Thái Tổ to ensure good relations between these neighboring kingdoms. Lý Thái Tổ's political skills enabled Đại Việt to secure peace with its neighboring kingdoms to the north and south. During his reign, Đại Việt had a stabilized political infrastructure and good relations with its neighbors, which enabled Đại Việt's economic development to flourish.
There were some small rebellions in Nghệ An and in highland areas in the southwest. Lý Thái Tổ himself led the army and quelled these rebellions successfully. During the Lý Dynasty, all royal princes were granted the title “Vương” or King, a title given emperors' kin or occasionally some primary officials or commanders who had achieved meritorious services or victories. The princes themselves were granted and led their own army regiments into battles. The royal institution enabled the princes to learn and many became experts in army tactics and martial arts as a result.
Lý Thái Tổ also paid close attention to civic development. He issued many royal decrees and edicts that amended many of the previous Lê Dynasty's rigid and primitive policies, such as reforming the royal administration system, establishment of the national university for higher education, and division of the realm into 24 “lộ” or commanderies, in particular Hoan Châu and Ái Châu, to strengthen strategic military defenses. He also reformed the tax system by creating six tax classifications, which enabled the royal court to efficiently collect taxes and citizens to clearly know which tax classification affected them:

Hoa Lu - 10th Century Vietnam's ancient capital,Vietnam tour,hanoi tour,hanoi Place to visit,Vietnam
Hoa Lu Citadel is the only thing left of Vietnam's former capital Hoa Lu. Founded in 968, Hoa Lu remained capital until the early 11th century when Emperor Ly Thai To moved it to today's Hanoi. Despite the lack of original buildings, the trip to Hoa Lu is definitely worth it. Arriving in the beautiful mountainous landscape, you walk 300m to the temples of the Dinh and Le Dynasty. They are situated in very beautifully designed parks, not unlike Van Mieu in Hanoi. Frangipani blossoms are literally everywhere, and the air is full of the smell of sweet incense fumes and damp air.
If you have a good guide, you'll be able to learn a lot about the history of Hoa Lu. Our guide was alright, but his English was a catastrophe so that we couldn't understand too much. The only thing that was understandable was his story about Emperor Dinh Tien Hoang. He was murdered by a mandarin who had dreamt of a star falling into his mouth - which he interpreted as a sign that he would be the only real emperor. The statue of Dinh Tien Hoang is found in the temple.
In order to avoid leaving Hoa Lu without a clue about what happened there, grab a good guidebook and ask your guide everything you want to know.
All of the travel agencies and hotels can arrange guided tours to Hoa Lu, usually combined with Tam Coc. The price for a 1-day-tour should be around 20$ per person

The Ly Dysnasty was started by Ly Cong Uan in 1009 and it helped to bring Vietnam into a new era, the era of independence and prosperity. Ly Cong Uan was also a visionary king that built Thang Long (or Ha Noi) today into the capital city of Vietnam in 1010.
Ly family was the founder of the Temple of Literature and the first national school of Vietnam starting a new tradition in the Vietnamese culture, the tradition of learning and respecting knowledge.
The Ly Bat De Temple or Do Temple (Vietnamese: ‘Đền Lý Bát Đế or Đền Đô’), formal Buddhist name Co Phap Dien, is a temple near Hanoi of which the central section was built in 1028 on the death of Ly Thai To (李太祖), and the complex enlarged as seven of his descendant Ly Dynasty emperors were also buried at the shrine – Ly Bat De means “Eight Ly Emperors.” Traditionally the shrine serves for ancestor worship of the eight emperors. It is located in Đình Bảng Commune, Từ Sơn District, in the Red River Delta province of Bắc Ninh. Another national monument, Đình Bảng communal house, is adjacent.
The main hall of the shrine is used for the worship of the Lý emperors. The Văn chỉ hall at the right of the main hall is used for the worship of Lý Đạo Thành and Tô Hiến Thành, two high-ranking civil mandarin officers who served the Lý Dynasty. The Võ Chỉ Hall at the left of main hall is dedicated to the worship of generals Lý Thường Kiệt, Lê Phụng Hiểu and Đào Cam Mộc. Behind Chuyen Bong is Hau Cung, which houses the statues of the eight Ly kings. They are Ly Thai To (1009-1028), Ly Thai Tong (1028-1054), Ly Thanh Tong (1054-1072), Ly Nhan Tong (1072-1128), Ly Than Tong (1128-1138), Ly Anh Tong (1138-1175), Ly Cao Tong (1175-1210) and Ly Hue Tong (1210-1224).
