Cool War Monument In Bucheon Korea For An Jung-geun
Here is a cool looking war monument I came across in Bucheon, Korea. I don't know what it says though. Apparently it is dedicated to An Jung-geun who assassinated Ito Hirobumi.

STORYLINE:
Members of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Korea gathered in Imjingak on Friday morning to hold a Mass to pray for peace on the Korean Peninsula and for the unification of the North and the South.
About 20,000 people, including Catholic priests and believers from sixteen different parishes participated in the event. It is eight years since the last such Mass took place.
During the Mass, participants carried a flag of the Korean Peninsula and released dove shaped balloons into the air.
The peace Mass was held every year from 1987 to 1995, but since then has only taken place twice, in 2000 and 2003.
Ties between the two Koreas remain strained.
The two nations are still technically at war because their 1950-53 Korean War ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty.

The Statue of Brothers is an 18 meter wide and 11-meter high symbol of the Korean War. It’s a scene where a family's elder brother, an officer, and his younger brother, a North Korean soldier, meet in a battlefield and express reconciliation.
The tomb-shaped dome was built with pieces of granite collected from nationwide locations symbolizing the sacrifices made by our patriots. The crack in the dome stands for the division of Korea and the hope for reunification. Inside the dome is a wall painting that expresses the spirit of the Korean people to overcome the national tragedy and a map plate of the 16 UN Allied Nations that dispatched troops to the war.
The Twin Clock Tower -Two young girls hold two clocks symbolizing war and peace. One girl holds a broken clock in which time stopped the day, month, year and hour when the war started between the two Koreas. The other girl is holding a clock that will be set with the time, day month and year of the reunification of Korea and the end of the war.

Ahn Jung-geun On peace in East Asia
The Chinese government opened a memorial hall at Harbin Railway Station for a Korean patriot Ahn Jung-geun on Jan. 19, 2014, fueling heated debated on a historic events that had taken place more than a century ago.
On the fated day, Oct. 26, 1903, patriot Ahn Jung-geun shot and killed the heady of the Japanese Privy Council Ito Hirobumi on a platform at the Harbin Railway Station. Ahn gave himself up on sight without any resistance. Japan labeled him a terrorist, but, in fact, he was the Lieutenant General of the Korea's Righteous Army and a true pan-Asianist, working for peace in East Asia. His grand idea remains guidance for the future in the region.
Arirang Special takes us back to 100 years, a critical moment in history for Korea, China and Japan, and reviews the action of Ahn Jung-geun. So was he a terrorist as Japan claim, or an independence activist fighting for his country and a visionary of peace in East Asia?
Chapter 1: In great concern over the national security
Ito Hirobumi boasted himself as being a protector of peace. However, Ahn Jung-geun revealed different side to Ito, listing 15 reasons how Ito was disrupting peace in East Asia. In fact, Japan was in the process of colonizing Korea through wars with China (the Sino-Japanese War) and Russia (the Russo-Japanese War). Ahn had logically formed his cases.
Chapter 2: A person with a noble reason is not afraid to give up one's life to do the right thing.
Ahn Jung-geun was born in Hwanghae-do, north of the Korean Peninsula, in 1879. He realized early on in his life the importance of equality and worked to educate his people of its importance. He decided to be part of the Korea's Righteous Army to fight against Japanese imperialism and ranked lieutenant general. There he severed his finger to pledge loyalty and decided to take action against Ito Hirobumi.
Chapter 3: Unless reading everyday, thorns grow in the mouth
Ahn Jung-geun tried to tell the people at the trial of deceptive Japanese acts. The trial was almost scripted by Japan and Ahn was sentenced to death, but he wasn't disturbed and carried on with his duty. As he was waiting for the sentence to be carried out, Ahn wrote On Peace in East Asia to describe this thoughts on how peace should be achieved in the region, such as Korea, China and Japan forming a community of politics, economy and culture. His idea, which is the likes of the EU, is evidently different from the ideas Ito Hirobumi wanted to realize, which is making Japan the leader in East Asia. Ahn was ahead of his time.
Chapter 4: It is the duty of the soldier to dedicate his life for the country.
Ahn Jung-geun faced his death proudly and moved many, including Japanese prison guards who were with him until the end. Ahn's mother supported his action and said it was his duty as a Korean to dedicate his life for the country.
On Mar. 26, 1910, Ahn was executed at the age of 31, but his death didn't end in vain. Until the end, he only prayed for his country's independence and peace in East Asia and even now, Ahn's spirit still lives on.
Korea condemns Japan's remarks on Korean independence fighter
Korea's foreign ministry on Monday strongly condemned remarks made by a top Japanese official,... who called Korean independence fighter Ahn Jung-geun a terrorist.
Earlier in the day, Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said that Ahn was a terrorist,... in response to the opening of a memorial hall to honor the Korean hero in the Chinese city of Harbin.
The foreign ministry said it was shocking that a person who speaks on behalf of the Japanese government made such ignorant remarks that go against history.
It said that Ahn is a highly-respected figure not only in Korea but around the world for the sacrifice he made to achieve peace in Asia.
In 1909, Ahn shot and killed Hirobumi Ito, the Japanese governor of Korea at the time.
The ministry said Ito was the main culprit who led Japan's invasion of Korea,... and accused the Abe administration of glorifying Japan's imperialistic past.

New footage of Ahn Jung-geun discovered
And back here in Korea....where new film footage of Korean independence fighter Ahn Jung-geun may have emerged.
In 1909, Ahn assassinated Hirobumi Ito, who served as the prime minister of Japan four times before becoming resident-general of Korea.
A New York Times article from August 14th, 1910, recounts the details of the incident, and says that two films of the assassination were brought to America.
It said the films were shown at Ahn's trial and later confiscated by the Japanese government.
Tokyo's public broadcaster NHK did show three scenes from the footage, but excluded key moments that may shed fresh light on the famous Korean patriot.
Korean groups that commemorate the legacy of Ahn say they welcomed the news and said they would continue efforts to find the historic footage.

Looking for the remains of patriot Ahn Jung-geun after the Panmunjeom Declaration
108년째 찾지 못한 안중근 의사의 유골...그의 마지막 유언은 이루어질 수 있을까
More than a century has passed since Ahn Jung-geun died after fighting for the country's freedom.
And yet, his remains are nowhere to be found.
Which is why the two Koreas are planning an excavation project dedicated to that cause.
According to our Hong Yoo, hopes are high, progress will be made soon, to bring him back home. (Even in heaven, I will invest all my energy for our independence.
AHN Jung-geun)
Ahn Jung-geun, who fought for Korea's independence and killed Ito Hirobumi, one of the main people behind Japan's annexation of Korea, is yet to be brought home.
Ahn's remains are known to be buried somewhere near the Lushun Prison but have yet to be found and his tomb waiting for him in Seoul remains empty.
Little progress has been made toward finding the remains of patriot Ahn Jung-geun since the last time South Korea tried to look for the corpse with the help of China in 2008.
But there are renewed hopes of finding Ahn's remains thanks to the Panmunjeon Declaration in which the South Korean President Moon Jae-in, and the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un agreed in April to make joint efforts to find Ahn's body.
Past searches were not successful as China, which has access to important information for the excavation, was not so cooperative.
The Chinese government stated that the request for the excavation of Ahn Jung-geun's remains must come from both South and North Korea since Ahn's homeland is officially Hwanghae-do Province, located in North Korea. With China having clearly stated its stance, the only way to start another excavation is through cooperation between the two Koreas.
When South Korea requested for topographic maps of the prison, China rejected the request saying that the region was a military base in the past so the Chinese military won't allow such information to be shared.
So South Korea's request for protection of the land where it is most likely that Ahn's body might be was also ignored and the area went through a lot of changes.
We think they must have carried out his body through this door and they must have used this road to get here.
Cooperation from Japan is also important. Perhaps the most crucial clue to find the body is in Japanese hands.
The document that specifically states that Ahn was buried in one of the public cemeteries of the prison is kept by Japan. The Japanese government is really meticulous at keeping records of everything. As such, there must be a document with the exact location of Ahn’s remains.
We keep asking Japan for it, but Tokyo has been uncooperative regarding our request. Moreover, this is not an issue that can be resolved in a short amount of time.
And to find such a document, research from both the government and private sector is needed, and the two must work together for the project to be a success.
Ahn Jung-geun’s last words were “bury my body again in my homeland when our nation’s sovereignty is restored.” Hopefully, if the momentum for peace between the two Koreas continues, Ahn’s wish could be at last fulfilled.

Ahn Jung-geun, a True Korean
Born in Haeju, Hwanghae Province in 1879, he became the assassin of the Resident-General of Korea. Ahn Jung-geun, a true Korean.
He's only dream was peace in Asia and the independence of Korea.
What kind of peace did Ahn Jung-geun promote in East Asia?
He hoped for a East Asan peace forum in which representatives from China, Korea, and Japan would participate, the opening and cooperative management of Lushun, the creation of a joint bank, and the use of a common currency. In short, he wished for East Asian regional peace based on cooperation and symbiosis.
Though unfinished, On Peace in East Asia claims that if Korea, China, and Japan do not invade each other and repsect each other's independence while coming together in cooperation to block out the West, true East Asian peace would be achieved.

The Womb of Taekwon-Do - JeJu Island, Korea
As the active fighting in the Korean Civil War was winding down, the RoK Army formed the 29th Infantry Division on JeJu Island, the southern most point of Korea. The Commanding Officer was (2 Star) Major-General Choi Hong Hi. He enlisted the assistance of Colonel Nam Tae Hi (then a young Lt.) & Sgt. Han Cha Kyo, both students of the Chung Do Kwan founded by KwanJangNim Lee Won Kuk, to teach TangSuDo (Korean Karate) to the soldiers under his command.
After the training ended the Division relocated to mainland Korea. To commemorate the 1 year anniversary of the Fist Division & celebrate the birthday of the RoK President SeungMan Rhee, Gen. Choi had his soldiers perform a martial arts exhibition. The lead demonstrators were Lt. Nam & Sgt. Han. The President was so impressed with Lt. Nam smashing 13 roof tiles with his bare fist, he directed Gen. Choi to teach this to all the troops.
Therefore many consider JeJu Island the womb of Taekwon-Do!
Dr. George Vitale of NYC briefly explains some of the history in this video filmed by Mr. Jerry Potts of Alaska USA during their visit to the monument on the 1st Tul Tour in 2011. (Please excuse the sound quality, filmed by amateurs & affected by the wind)
Sadly this monument was hidden, rumored at the behest of the brother of the military dictator, Gen. Chun Do Hwan in 1985. Fortunately the local residents restored it in 2000 so Gen. Choi, the soldiers under his command who 1st gave the world Taekwon-Do & JeJu Island can be honored for their great contributions.
(Note: Gen. Chun Do Hwan was subsequently convicted & sentenced to death for his crimes against the Korean people. The capital punishment was commuted by the civilian democratically elected president(s) so the healing in Korea could begin. We look forward to the day when Gen. Choi's good name is restored, as he was a true Korean patriot! Hopefully he & the original Pioneers of Taekwon-Do will be credited for their important historical role as well.)
