Gangwha Jeondeungsa Temple at Incheon City in Korea
설Jeondeungsa Temple contains significant architectural works, including the main building Daeungbojeon. Decorated with delicate carvings, it is a superlative example of the architecture of the mid-Joseon Dynasty. The canopy situated above the Buddha statue inside Daeungbojeon building showcases masterful workmanship. On the walls and columns of Daeungbojeon, visitors can see names of soldiers written on the walls. These soldiers fought against the French Navy and wrote their names in Jeondeungsa to pray to Buddha for good luck in war. You could read more details at

Wawoojongsa Temple Waujeongsa Yongin 와우정사용인
Wawoojongsa Temple was established in 1970 by Kim Hae-Geun, a monk who was displaced by the Korean War. The temple is not only a reflection of the monk’s sincere hope for the reunification of the North and South, but is also the birthplace of the Korean Buddhist Nirvana Order.
There are over 3,000 Buddhist statues on the temple grounds, the most famous of which are the Buldu (Buddha heads) placed at the entrance and the Wabul (reclining Buddha statue) stationed in the middle of the mountain. The 8m-high Buldu is the largest of its kind and the Wabul, which is made from a juniper tree from Indonesia, is 3m in height and 12m in length. As the world’s biggest wooden Buddhist sculpture, the Buldu has been registered in the Guinness Book of Records.
The temple is also home to a 5-Dhyani Buddha made of 30 tons of brass (taking decades to complete) as well as the 12-ton Bell of Unification (struck during the Seoul Olympics in 1988). Other attractions include a bronze statue of Buddha sitting with his legs half-crossed (the largest of its kind in the nation) and the nation’s only Sakyamuni Bulgohangsang statue.
One of the other unique things about the temple is the Pagoda of Unification, located besides the stairs of the Hall of Nirvana. The pagoda is comprised of stones brought by visitors from various holy sites all over the world. Hence, the construction of the Pagoda is a never-ending progress. As a symbol of the pervading hope for world peace, a wide range of Buddhist statues from many countries including India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, China and Thailand are on display around the temple, allowing visitors to learn about Buddhist cultures from all over the world.
Korean Buddhism Photo Exhibition
And now let's get back to our Arts and Culture Corner. Yim Yoonhee joins us in the studio.
Good afternoon.
There were many events going on over the weekend because of Children's day and the day of Buddha's birth.
I hear you have an exhibition today that is fitting for the occassion.
Right, so there were many exhibitions and events held in honor of Buddha.
Celebrating the birth of Buddha has become a tradition here, and it's now no longer limited to those who follow Buddhism.
It's become such a big part of our culture that people look forward to this time of the year filled with parades and festivals.
Today I have a photo exhibition for just that.
Let's take a look.
Buddhism is one of the most commonly found religions in Korea.
Many follow after the teachings of Buddhism in search for enlightenment and the sublime state of nirvana,... and all these teachings are based on a man from 5th century BCE who went by the name of Siddhartha Guantama,... but he's known to many as Buddha.
And every year, millions of people all over the world celebrate his birth, through various different events, including this photography exhibition.
[INTERVIEW]
The Buddhism Photography event is about taking pictures regarding Buddhism. We have an event every month, and this month's theme is the wind chime. They're often hung on the roofs of temples, so we visited various temples to take these pictures.
Whether it be on the mysterious mountainsides, or the glistening shores, the wind chime has long been seen as a means of achieving harmony within the mind and soul.
Soft resonating sounds from the chimes are believed to bring a sense of peace and well being, and were hung around Buddhist temples for decades through the history of Asia.
The wind chimes seen hanging around Korea often feature a fish, wiggling peacefully through the air.
[INTERVIEW]
As the wind blows, if you extend the exposure you can capture the movement. This piece is called 'Can you hear the wind chime?' The fish represents the pursuit of nirvana in Buddhism, because a fish never rests, and is always moving around, like the wind chime in the wind.
Sometimes they lay silent, hanging from the roofs of snow ladden temples but sometimes they send soft chimes through the air.
Wherever they are, they symbolize the peace and wellbeing of the body, mind, and soul.
[STUDIO CLOSING]
You mentioned to me you have a few more exhibitions for us.
Right. There is quite a bit of art work associated with Buddhism, including paintings.
At the Topgoal Museum located in Seoul, they're showing the works of widely recognized artists, some works date back to the 1700s.
Are there also permanent museum exhibitions on Buddhism.
Right, for example the Chuncheon National Museum offers a permanent exhibition featuring works from Buddhism and the history of Buddhism here.
This museum is located in the mountains of Gangwon-do region which is known for its beautiful temples.
In fact Buddhist beliefs were closely linked to the beautiful mountains of the area and they have some beautiful statues and art works from these temples.
And in honor of Buddha's birth, they have an exhibition currently going on called the Hand of Buddha.
It features art work about the spiritual hand gesture in Buddhism called the mudras
along with the story behind it.
Thank you for that report.

Sexual Slavery Victim / KBS뉴스(News)
[Anchor Lead]
Just one day left to the funeral procession for Kim Bok-dong, the elderly victim of Japan's wartime sexual slavery who died early this week. Citizens visited her memorial altar until the late hours of January 30th, and wished her to rest in peace and fly off like a butterfly.
[Pkg]
Even late at night, citizens continuously visit the memorial altar to pay respects to the late Kim Bok-dong. A memorial ceremony was also held. Mourners watch a video of Kim's remarks made during her lifetime, and also raise their own voices, in memory of the elderly victim.
[Soundbite] Jeong Yeong-joo(Mourner) : I will work to build a society Kim had hoped for and have more people join this cause.
A wall of the funeral home is covered in yellow paper notes to remember Kim's last words asking to fight to the end.
[Soundbite] Kim Gi-hyeon(Mourner) : I will forever remember the pain and sorrow of victims of wartime sex crimes including Kim Bok-dong.
Following the deaths of two elderly sexual slavery victims including Kim, the weekly Wednesday protest held outside the Japanese embassy in Seoul gathered even more participants. About double the regular number showed up on January 30th. In remembrance of Kim who had worried about the Wednesday rally even when she was ill, citizens called for a more active government stance to resolve the sex slavery issue.
[Soundbite] Hong So-yeon(Wednesday Rally Participant (Jan. 30)) : What attitude did the Japanese government show us during the passing of many of our elderly victims?
A citizens funeral committee will carry her coffin out for burial in the morning of February first and hold a sendoff ceremony outside the former Japanese embassy building. Kim used to say that when she dies, she would like to fly like a butterfly. She will be laid to rest at the Hill of National Commemoration in Cheonan, Chungcheongnam-do Province on February first.

Korean Buddhist Temple Worship
An inside peak at worship in a Buddhist Temple during Seollal (is the first day of the lunar calendar) Buddhism has a long history, originating in India over 2,600 years ago. Travelers introduced the religion to Korea around the fourth century A.D. Since that time, Buddhism has greatly influenced Korean culture and society, and it also has produced many widely admired works of art.
