Mokpo Gatbawi
Gatbawi, meaning a rock shape resembling a Satgat, or a traditional Korean conical bambo rain hat. Gatbawi is natural tafoni (small cave-live features found in granular rock such as sandstone, with rounded entrances and smooth concave walls) and is between 6-8 meters/20-26 feet in size named Jeongbawi and Satgatbawi. The larger rock is called the father and the smaller one is called the son.
Gatbawi designated Natural Monument Number 500.
Gatbawi is found on the shore of Mokpo's east harbor, near the mouth of the Yeongsan River, South Jeolla Province, South Korea.
The following is the legend behind the rock figures of Mokpo Gatbawi:
A long time ago, a young man lived with his sick father and sold salt. Though he was poor, he was a kind man who would do anything to help his sick father.
He worked as a farm hand for a rich house to save money to cure his father's illness. He did his job well but, in the end, his master didn't pay him. When he retumed home after one month, he found his father's body was already cold.
He regreted that he had been foolish in not caring for his father for a month. The least he could do was to try to make him comfortable in the afterlife. Unfortunately, as he was moving his father's body, he slipped and dropped the coffin into the sea.
He felt awful about his father's underwater burial. To make amends, he remained in that spot, wearing a bamboo hat until his death so that he too could not see the sky. Some time after his death, two rocks rose up at Gatbawi.

Japan expresses regret over U.S. Supreme Court ruling on California 'comfort woman' statue

A nationalist group from Japan demanding the removal of a statue dedicated to wartime sex slavery victims, lost an appeal in the U.S. Supreme Court.
Connie Kim zooms in on the ruling that puts an end to years of lawsuits over the issue... that even saw the Japanese government get involved.
Japan has expressed its regret about the U.S. Supreme Court's decision against a Japanese group seeking the removal of a comfort woman statue in California -- the first of its kind to be set up in the United States.
Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said in a regular press briefing on Tuesday that regardless of the decision,... Tokyo will continue to explain its stance on the issue to related officials in California.
Still, the court's decision formally ends the controversy over the statue that was installed in the city of Glendale in 2013.
The right-leaning Japanese group -- Global Alliance for Historical Truth -- made a series of requests to have the statue removed.
It filed suit with a district court in Los Angeles in 2014 and the U.S. Court of Appeals in California in 2015, but the courts said the statue's removal would constitute a violation of the freedom of expression.
Reflecting the Japanese government's interest in the issue, Tokyo had sent a letter of opinion to the U.S. Supreme Court calling for the statue's removal.
Meanwhile, Japan is in the midst of a diplomatic row with Korea over the installation of a comfort woman statue near the Japanese Consulate General in Busan,... which prompted Tokyo to recall its ambassador in January.
The statue was installed to commemorate the first anniversary of a landmark deal struck by Korea and Japan in 2015 that sought to resolve the issue.
While the U.S. court ruling is not related to the comfort woman statue in Korea,... experts say the case showed Tokyo's determined to see the statues removed.
In the absence of the president, Seoul is not in a position to exert diplomatic leadership. The Japanese government is taking advantage of the situation.

Experts speculate that Tokyo will continue to raise the statue issue with Seoul,... likely worsening the already strained bilateral relationship.

Hiking to Gatbawi Buddha in Daegu South Korea
Lots of stats on the Hike to Gatbawi Buddha in Daegu South Korea where on a good day you can see all the surrounding mountains while you listen to the monks peaceful chants.
Gatbawi is a statue of Buddha that sits against a rocky cliff of Gwanbong Peak that rises 850m above the sea level. The name Gatbawi comes from the fact that the Buddha has a flat rock (bawi) on its head that looks like a Korean traditional hat (called a gat). The statue, designated Treasure No. 431, is one of the most sophisticated Buddha statues of the 9th Century. Legend has it that the statue grants honest prayers, so every year at sunrise on New Year’s Day people flock to the Buddha statue to make a wish for the new year and see the rising sun.

Soa, world leaders were swift to condemn North Korea for its latest nuclear test. Seoul's foreign affairs minister is back from his trip with the president, isn't he?
Conn-young,... as South Korea's Foreign Minister is back in Seoul,... after traveling with President Park Geun-hye to Russia, China, and Laos,... he is now discussing how to deal with Pyongyang's fifth nuclear test and how to cooperate with the international community on the matter.
The ministry said a meeting under Minister Yun's lead is happening tonight,... but it did not announce the time,... and said it's being held behind closed doors.
Earlier,... when the minister was in Vientiane,... he discussed the North's threat,...
...over the phone with his U.S. and Japanese counterparts,... as well as a European Union official.
Both Minister Yun and Tokyo's top diplomat Fumio Kishida denounced Pyongyang's fifth nuclear test and shared their early analyses of it,... as well as the results of relevant meetings in their respective countries.
Yun and Kishida also promised to closely cooperate on the trilateral front with the U.S.
Following that conversation, Yun and his U.S. counterpart, Secretary of State John Kerry agreed that Seoul and Washington are on the same page regarding North Korea's latest nuclear test,... and said they'll work on closing the loopholes in the sanctions against Pyongyang.
While there's no word yet on any contact between Minister Yun and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi,... North Korea's closest ally China,... issued a statement,... saying it urges North Korea to honour its commitment to denuclearization, comply with the relevant Security Council resolutions and stop taking any actions that worsen the situation.
China's Foreign Ministry said it'll lodge a protest against Pyongyang's embassy in Beijing.
That's a lot of international responses, and quickly too.
To go further,... on the United Nation's front we're also expecting criticism in the near future?
Yes,... South Korea's Foreign Ministry says the UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting at the UN headquarters in New York on Friday afternoon,... local time,... on how to deal with North Korea's fifth nuclear test.
That'll be early Saturday in South Korea.
The meeting has been jointly requested by Seoul, Washington, and Tokyo.
The fifteen security council members are expected to first announce their position on the test,... then begin to discuss additional sanctions on the regime,... which are expected to be harsher than those imposed in March,... namely resolution 2270 .
While the council is expected to speak with one voice in condemning Pyongyang,... it's not expected to be an easy and fast task to form a new resolution,...
...as the last one took almost two months to be adopted.
We'll probably have more on the emergency meeting on Saturday.

Seb Lester is a globally recognized calligraphy artist and font designer. He has designed logos for NASA, Apple, Nike, Intel, The New York Times and even the official slogan of the Vancouver Winter Olympics. His goal is to design fonts that will stay in use for a long time. He visited Haenam and Gangjin, where many accomplished Korean calligraphers used to live.
[Main Artist] Seb Lester
Seb Lester made his name by posting a video of him writing the logo of a famous brand solely with a pen on social media. He has designed logos for NASA, Apple, Nike, Intel, The New York Times and even the official slogan of the Vancouver Winter Olympics. His goal is to design fonts that will stay in use for a long time.
[Brief Plot]
- Seb visits a Buddhist temple on the scenic Duryunsan Mountain to see signs that were written by the best calligrapher of Asia during the Joseon period.
- Seb learns about the Korean wood carving culture from Ven. Hyeokin, who restored several priceless Buddhist scriptures. The monk carves a special sign for Seb as a gift.
- Seb meets calligraphy artist Jin Seong-young on Jodo Island in Jindo. Jin has been stydying calligraphy to maximize the beauty of Korean letters. He believes that writing comes not from the artist's fingertips but from the heart, and that writing letters is an art. The two calligraphy artists create a work of art reflecting their philosophies.
