Sex Slavery Statue
[Anchor Lead]
Korean citizens are taking shifts guarding a statue of a girl installed outside the Japanese consulate general in port city Busan. Tokyo has been stepping up diplomatic pressure over the statue, which symbolizes wartime sex slavery victims.
[Pkg]
A statue of a girl faces the wall of the Japanese consulate general in Busan. The statue resolutely guards its post, despite growing pressure from Japan to have it removed on the basis that a one billion yen settlement has been paid. Citizens who visit the statue linger at the site, worried that it may be damaged.
[Soundbite] Park Sin-yeong(Busan Resident) : I heard that the statue could be removed, so I came out with the hope that even just one more visitor could help to protect it.
Volunteers from civic groups take turns guarding the statue every day. A separate storage box is also prepared to accommodate gifts for the statue from the public, such as hand-knit mufflers and letters from children. A group defending the statue says public support has been pouring in against increasing pressure from Japan, and that it will continue to protect the statue with the cooperation of the public even without aid from the central or local government.
[Soundbite] Yun Yong-jo(Policy Chief, Busan-based Civic Group) : We are considering launching an action group devoted to defending the statue, nullifying the Korea-Japan agreement on the sex slavery issue, and gathering public opinion to receive a proper apology and compensation from Japan.
Seoul and Tokyo are in a state of diplomatic confrontation over the peace statue symbolizing Japan's wartime sex slavery victims. Throughout Korea, movements are budding to erect even more statues.

Gangwha Jeondeungsa Temple at Incheon City in Korea
설Jeondeungsa Temple contains significant architectural works, including the main building Daeungbojeon. Decorated with delicate carvings, it is a superlative example of the architecture of the mid-Joseon Dynasty. The canopy situated above the Buddha statue inside Daeungbojeon building showcases masterful workmanship. On the walls and columns of Daeungbojeon, visitors can see names of soldiers written on the walls. These soldiers fought against the French Navy and wrote their names in Jeondeungsa to pray to Buddha for good luck in war. You could read more details at

Korea signs MOUs with East Timor and Kyrgystan to further Saemaul model
새마을운동 글로벌 확산 지원- 동티모르와 키르지르와 MOU 체결
Korea has helped developing countries break out of poverty and improve their living standards over the years with the Saemaul Undong, a homegrown rural reform initiative.
Additional steps to support global development were highlighted at an annual conference in Pyongchang.
Oh Soo-young was there.
Korea has bolstered its commitment to helping rural communities around the world end poverty and create sustainable ways of living... with its homegrown rural development model called Saemaul Undong.
Interior Minister Hong Yun-sik has taken that commitment one step further... by forging bilateral agreements with his counterparts from East Timor and Kyrgystan during a four-day Saemaul Leadership conference in Pyeongchang.
The Saemaul Undong movement transformed Korea's impoverished, war-torn landscape into an economic powerhouse starting in the 1970s,... improving not only agriculture and infrastructure but also jobs, education and governance, in addition to promoting gender equality.
Minister Hong remarked on the progress of Saemaul projects in East Timor, while and East Timor's Justice Minister Dionisio Soares expressed a desire to further expand pilot villages and human resources training.
After studying Saemaul Undong principles, which are basically based on changing mindsets, self-reliance and self-initiative,... and to take it on from there, our government think it's very important to embrace these values.
Korea had also signed an MOU with Kyrgyzstan the previous day,... on the expansion of Saemaul projects and training in the country.
The Saemaul Undong has been the force behind major developments in several villages, especially in terms of building infrastructure. The MOU signed today marks a new chapter in expanding Saemaul-based development.
To further help countries localize the rural reform initiative, Korea's interior minister outlined several courses of action.
We're developing a Saemaul Index to help countries localize and customize the initiative to their needs and stages of development, in addition to producing a comprehensive educational curriculum. Microfinancing for low-income villagers is also essential, so we will include that to share the Saemaul financial cooperative experience.
Korea will also support the Global Saemaul League, a network of more than 30 countries launched on Wednesday to strengthen cooperation on further spreading the initiative.

- Korean War Memorial to the First Battle of the UN Forces -
Located at Jukiryeong, Naesammi-Dong, Osan-City, Kyonggi Province, this monument was erected by the kyonggi provincial office on April 6, 1982, The memorial is made of three separate panels rising 19.5 meters high and five bronze figures standing 3.6 meters hight. The three panels symbolize the three positions taken up by the UN forces when they encountered the enemy for the first time in the war. The bronze statues express the ferocity of the first battle.
The Monument was erected in memory of the first battle between the UN forces and the North Korean communist aggressors and symbolizes the hope that the soldiers who perished in the fighting will rest in peace. The UN forces engaged the enemy for the first time on July 5, 1950. Companies B and C of the 1st Battalion, the 21st Regiment of the US 24th Infantry Division, under the battalion command of Lieutenant Colonel Charles Bradford Smith, and Unit A of the 52nd Artillery Battalion of the same division engaged the enemy in fierce battles for six hours and 15 minutes.
Five hundred and forty US servicemen fought against the 5th Regiment of the North Korean Army, 4th Infantry Division. They killed 127 enemy soldiers and destroyed 6 tanks but suffered 181 dead and a loss of heavy weapons
- Story of the JookMiRyung Battle in KOREA WAR -
On July 5th, the first battle between the United Nations and North Korea took place in the JookMiRyung Valley in Osan City.
When Task Force Smith arrived at 3 am, it was raining hard and they prepared a battle station nearby both the train tracks and road. Division B was placed on the left side of the road, and the Division C was placed on the right side of the train tracks. A 105mm cannon was placed in SooChungRee, at the back of the JookMiRyung valley.
At 7 am, the North Korean tanks begin to appear near Suwon. The battle began at 8:16am when Task Force Smith fired the first shot. Unfortunately, the attack did not impact the North Korean army, as they were led by Russian T-34 tanks.
Around 10:00 am, more North Korean army and trucks—all together about 10 km long—appeared led by 3 tanks.
Task Force Smith begin shooting their mortars and machine guns and many soldiers, both enemy and ally, fell to the ground.
However, after the North Korean army blocked the retreating road of the Smith Army and the tanks pushed into the center of the Task Force Smith force, the defense line collapsed quickly.
After the exhaustion of all their ammunition and force, Task Force Smith decided to retreat at 2:30 PM. Out of 540 total, 150 soldiers and 31 cannon soldiers were either killed or missing in action. By comparison, the North Korean army only lost about 150 soldiers out of 5000.
Despite the loss, this first battle announced the participation of the UN army. Up until this point, North Korea did not think that either the U.S. or UN would get involved. It was also the first military action taken by the UN after their foundation in order to protect liberty and peace.

Travel South Korea - Visiting the Jongmyo Shrine in Seoul
Take a tour of Jongmyo Shrine in Seoul, South Korea -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
Seoul, in the Republic of Korea, is home to the oldest existing royal Confucian shrine.
The Jongmyo Shrine is an amazing structure of great beauty, religious importance, and historic value.
The shrine is still in use and memorial rituals for Korean royalty are performed on a regular basis.
The original shrine here was built in the late 14th century, was subsequently burned in an invasion, and later rebuilt at the start of the 17th century.
Each of the nineteen rooms of the Jongmyo shrine contains a memorial tablet of a past king and queen.
The rooms of the shrine stand side-by-side, making the building unusually long.
South Korea’s ‘Comfort Women’
Between 1910 and 1945, the Korean peninsula was occupied by the Japanese.
It was a period marked by repression, especially for tens of thousands of women who were forced into prostitution. They became known as ‘comfort women’ As part of our special series on South Korea, Abubakr al Shamahi went to Seoul to meet some of those who suffered under Japan’s occupation.

Korea Pt 59: Tapgol Park
Tapgol Park, formerly Pagoda Park, is a small (19,599 m²) public park located at 97 Jongno-gil, Seoul, South Korea. This park was once a site of Wongaksa temple. The word tap means pagoda, and the park gets its name from Wongaksa Pagoda 10 tier pagoda (National Treasure No.2) in the park.
Tapgol Park is historically important as the site of the origin of the March 1st Movement 1919, an important part of the Korean independence movement as the first location for the reading of the Declaration of Independence.
It was previously the site of a 15th century Buddhist temple, and a 10 tier pagoda and a few relics of the temple still can be seen in the park. It was organized as a garden by John McLeavy Brown, the Irish advisor to provincial subdivision in 1897, and opened to the public in 1920. There are many statues and monuments in the park, dedicated to various various patriots and victims of Japanese brutality. There are a number of bas-relief statues representing Korean patriots, the Declaration of Independence Monument, and a poem by Han Yong-un.
As an important place in recent Korean history, it is a popular place for demonstrations of various kinds. It was the designated terminus of the Grand Peace March for Democracy on June 24th 1986 that led to the acceptance of free elections by President Chun Doo-whan of South Korea. It is served by Jongno 3-ga Station on Lines 1, 3 and 5 of the Seoul Subway.
Temples of South Korea
We had a chance to visit a few of the many Temples in southern South Korea. The winter weather provided a beautiful backdrop for these magnificent monuments. The music is from Seoul Musical Ensemble - I don't own the rights but love promoting them.
