Known as Ramses the Great, the pharoah reigned from 1279 to 1213 B.C. and is widely considered to be the most powerful pharaoh of ancient Egypt. It took about 30 minutes to move the 3,200-year-old statue. Proud government officials and dignitaries welcomed its arrival at the museum.

Archaeologists in Egypt have made what's described as one of the most important ever discoveries.
A joint Egyptian-German team in Cairo have found parts of two statues, one of which it's thought depicts Ramses the Great, the Pharoah who was the most powerful and celebrated ruler of ancient Egypt more than 3,000 years ago.

Archaeologists from Egypt and Germany have found a massive eight-metre statue submerged in ground water in a Cairo slum that they say probably depicts revered Pharaoh Ramses II, who ruled Egypt more than 3,000 years ago.
The discovery, hailed by the Antiquities Ministry as one of the most important ever, was made near the ruins of Ramses II's temple in the ancient city of Heliopolis, located in the eastern part of modern-day Cairo.
“Last Tuesday they called me to announce the big discovery of a colossus of a king, most probably Ramses II, made out of quartzite,” Antiquities Minister Khaled al-Anani told Reuters on Thursday at the site of the statue's unveiling.
The most powerful and celebrated ruler of ancient Egypt, the pharaoh also known as Ramses the Great was the third of the Nineteenth Dynasty of Egypt and ruled from 1279 to 1213 BCE.

the transfer of the statue, which was carried out by the armed forces’ transportation department in cooperation with the Ministry of Antiquities. The process began after midnight from Matariya Square, reaching the museum at 4 am on Thursday.
The convoy moved slowly to protect the colussus from any damage due to friction. The statue weights about 8.5 tons, making this a mammoth task in addition to transferring the other relics including the head of the statue, which weighs 1.5 tons, according to sources from the ministry.
Antiquities Minister Khaled al-Anany and Tourism Minister Yehia Rashed are scheduled to hold an international press conference in the museum garden at 6 pm.
The convoy travelled via the Ring Road, starting at Mostord to Saft al-Laban bridge until Cairo University; then to Dokki Bridge followed by October Bridge until arriving at Abdel Moneim Riyad Square, and finally Tahrir Square, where the museum is located.
The discovery of the statue will bolster Egypt's famed ancient collections, helping to attract more tourists.
Two statues of Ramses II were discovered submerged in groundwater by an Egyptian-German archeological mission that has been working around the country.
The ministry has been working on moving the monuments to the Egyptian Museum to carry out preliminary restorations before transferring these to the Grand Museum.

STORYLINE:
Egypt's giant statue of Pharaoh Ramses II moved from a congested downtown square in Cairo on Friday to its new home near the more peaceful Great Pyramids.
Traffic fumes, as well as subway vibrations, have been damaging the more than 3,200-year-old granite statue at Ramses Square, its home since the early 1950s, when it was taken from a temple at the site of the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis.
The 125-tonne statue, a popular feature on postcards and guide books, will become part of a new museum about a mile (1.6 kilometres) from the pyramids.
Officials discussed moving the statue for more than a decade as experts bickered over where it should go.
The location at the Grand Museum of Egypt was recently agreed upon, and engineers began researching how to move the statue.
A steel cage was constructed around the statue and connected to steel beams.
Two flatbed trucks were carrying it through the city overnight to avoid traffic, an eight-mile (13 kilometres) trip that will take several hours, said the chairman of Arab Contractors, the company moving the statue.
Onlookers crowded along the street around the statue, which was surrounded by a convoy including 1,500 soldiers, during the final leg of its journey.
The trip took about 10 hours.
The museum, which will also house King Tutankhamun's mummy and other treasures, is not expected to open for at least five years.
Ramses II was a warrior king who is credited with bringing Egypt unprecedented power and splendour during his 67-year reign. He died in 1225 B.C.

Storyline; Egyptian Ministery of Antiquities announced a new discovery at the ancient Heliopolis archaeological site in Matareya area after a quartzite colossus possibly of Ramses II and limestone bust of Seti II have been discovered in Cairo.
The statues were found in parts in the vicinity of the King Ramses II temple in the temple precinct of ancient Heliopolis, also known as “Oun,” by a German-Egyptian archaeological mission led by Dr. Dietrich Raue.
The mission spent five years of excavation at El Matareya, a district in the northern region of Greater Cairo, east of the Nile, in Egypt.
Egyptian Minister of Antiquities Khaled Elanany said that the discovered parts of Ramses II statue will be moved to the Grand Egyptian Museum site to be professionally restored until it being displayed by April 2018 when the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza is expected to be inaugurated.’

The temple at Abu Simbel, which Ramses II (the Egyptian Pharaoh who ruled Egypt for 66 years from 1270 to 1213 BC) ordered built near the border of Nubia and Upper Egypt, was dedicated to two sun gods, Amun-Re and Re-Horakhte. Standing 100 feet (33 meters) tall, the temple was carved into an already-standing sandstone mountain on the banks of the Nile. Four colossal statues of Ramses, each 66 feet (22 meters) high, guard the entrance to the temple. Rising to the pharaoh's knees are smaller statues of family members: his mother; favorite wife, Nefertari; and son, Prince Amonherkhepshef. Inside the temple, three connected halls extend 185 feet (56 meters) into the mountain. Images of the king's life and many achievements adorn the walls. Rock-cut temples may have been especially significant in ancient Egypt because the bulge in the otherwise flat land may have signified the location where the gods emerged from the Earth, says Williams.
