What Dominican Republic Pesos Look Like Pt 1: Paper Money
Here's what Dominican Republic pesos look like. I think I have all the paper bills here, except for the $2000 peso bill.
The $2000 peso bill (which I don't have here) is blue. According to wikipedia, the $2000 Dominican peso (dop) bill has Emilio Prud Homme and Jose Rufino Reyes Siancas, the composers of the Dominican national anthem, on it. The National Theater is on the back.
The $1000 dop bill is red. It has the National Palace on one side and the Columbus Alcazar building on the other. I noticed some $1000 peso bills look a little different (slightly different colour). I think the older bills may be a little different from the newer ones.
The $500 bill is greenish-blue. It has Salome Urena and Pedro Henriquez Urena on one side and the Central Bank of the DR on the other. According to wikipedia, Salome Urena was a celebrated Dominican poet and Pedro Henriques, her son, was also a well known literary figure.
The $200 bill is reddish-purple / violet. It has 3 Mirabal Sisters on one side and the Monument to them on the other. According to wikipedia, there were 4 Mirabal sisters, and they were involved in opposing long time Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo. In retaliation, 3 of the sisters were assassinated by the regime- presumably the ones pictured on the money. I believe the monument to them is located in Santiago de los Caballeros, the DR's 2nd biggest city after the capital, Santo Domingo.
The $100 dop bill is light brown coloured. It has Francisco del Rosario Sanchez, Juan Pablo Duarte, and Matias Ramon Mella on one side and the Count's Gate on the other. Duarte and the other 2 men on the $100 dop bill led the Dominican War of Independence against Haiti in 1844. Duarte seems to be the most well-known of the 3.
The $20 bill is pinkish with a little bit of greenish-blue or blueish-green. It has Gregorio Luperon on one side and the Panteon Nacional on the other side. Luperon was a man from the city of Puerto Plata who led the Restoration War to regain independence after Spanish colonial rule was briefly restored in the 1860s. For some reason they don't show this bill on the wikipedia article, but I received $20 dop bills in the DR and I spent them as well.
