Kintaikyo, Iwakuni Japan, and the legend of Sasaki Kojiro
In the Japanese town of Iwakuni, you might come across an impressive statue of a swordsman in one of its largest and most popular parks. The statue carries with it an interesting bit of martial arts history associated with this town that I wanted to try and introduce you to here. It is a representation and tribute to the famed Sasaki Kojiro and this is a brief synopses of his connection to this city. While some of the details of my run-down are undoubtedly in dispute (the sources vary wildly in the details as this goes back the the dawn of the Tokugawa era when records were unreliable at best), I tried to present all the information as I have personally learned it. More resources are listed below. I hope you enjoy and as always, let me know if there is anything else I can help with!

Iwakuni Art Museum, located on the other side of the Kintai-kyo Bridge in Iwakuni city, Yamaguchi Prefecture, features glassware, samurai armor, ceramics, and the furniture of Iwakuni's feudal lords.
Once visitors cross the Kintai-kyo Bridge, they will see the statue of Kikkawa Hiroyoshi, the 3rd lord of Iwakuni. Behind Kikkawa’s statue is Kikko Park, a beautiful, spacious area blessed with nature. During the Edo Periods, the residences of the Kikkawa family were located here, in Kikko Park, with relatives living nearby. As a result, in addition to the fountains and spectacular natural surroundings, Kikko Park contains the ruminants of former samurai residences and museums displaying historic artifacts of this part of Japan.
Great Sand Art - Japanese SAMURAI warriors - at FUKIAGE Sand Festival (4 May 2015)
(Explanation of Statue)
Heike and Genji were battling over the political leadership in the 12th century in Japan.
The sand statue depicts the Ichinotani battle in 1184.
The number of Heike soldiers is much bigger than that of Genji soldiers. It seems that Heike would win the battle.
However, Genji army made an unbelievable tactics.
Genji suddenly attacked Heike army from steep cliff of the backside of Heike's headquarters.
The sudden attack was totally unexpected for Heike army, because the cliff was so steep that many people thought nobody could come down from the top of the cliff except for wild deer.
As a result, Genji won the battle of Ichinotani.
Japanese people have admired the courage of Genji soldiers during the battle until now.

Samurai Festival - Heike Ochudo Matsuri - Yunishigawa
In the small town of Yunishigawa in Tochigi they hold a festival to honor their town's founders. Over 800 years ago two great samurai clans - the Heike and Genji - warred with each other for control of the country. The Heike were eventually utterly defeated and the survivors fled to remote areas like Yunishigawa.
In June, Yunishigawa does a parade of samurai and a variety of performances including biwa songs from the Tale of the Heike. This is a compilation of several years of the festival having been there 4-5 times.

Samurai were the military nobility and officer caste of medieval and early-modern Japan. In Japanese, they are usually referred to as bushi or buke .According to translator William Scott Wilson: In Chinese, the character 侍 was originally a verb meaning to wait upon or accompany persons in the upper ranks of society, and this is also true of the original term in Japanese, saburau. In both countries the terms were nominalized to mean those who serve in close attendance to the nobility, the pronunciation in Japanese changing to saburai.
