Tazawa Lake & Tatsuko Statue
Lake Tazawa is a caldera lake in the city of Semboku, Akita Prefecture, northern Japan. It is the deepest lake in Japan at 423 metres. The area is a popular vacation area and several hot spring resorts can be found in the hills above the lake. Lake Tazawa (Tazawako) is a scenic caldera lake that has not been overly developed and retains a natural and rustic atmosphere. The lake is often visited in conjunction with nearby sites like Nyuto Onsen or Mount Akita - Komagatake, which also offer rustic scenes that are typical of the Tohoku region. At the northern end of the lake stands the Goza no Ishi Shrine on a site where the local lords used to come to admire the water in the feudal past . At the western end of the lake there is a famous golden statue of a woman named Tatsuko that has become a local symbol. According to legend, Tatsuko was a beautiful girl who prayed to retain her beauty forever but was instead cursed and turned into a dragon and eventually sunk to the bottom of Lake Tazawa.

I went to Akita everywhere, and I heard that Udon was made by another family, but I could not taste it, so I was really sad. The hitter and the lake that I met on the road. It is the deepest lake in Japan, and the blue water contains the sky and mountains. The despair disappeared as the snow melted in the picturesque scenery. At the shore of the lake, there is a statue of a woman named Tatsuko. She said that it was easy to eat lake water and keep the lake to keep beauty forever. Is it because of her? The lake keeps beauty and never freezes in the winter.

Lake Tazawa, Akita Prefecture: A Deep Blue, Unfrozen Surface Even in Winter | Nippon.com
Lake Tazawa (Tazawa-ko) in Senboku, a city in eastern Akita Prefecture, never freezes. The winters in the area are extremely cold, but the surface of the lake keeps its deep cobalt blue color, offering a striking, almost otherworldly contrast to the snow-covered surroundings.
A gold statue of a woman stands next to the lake. It represents Tatsuko-hime, a young woman who prayed for eternal beauty. According to legend, the goddess Kannon heard her prayers and told her where to find a fountain of youth. She drank from it, but the more she did so, the thirstier she grew. Finally she realized that she had become a dragon. Ever since, she has dwelled in Lake Tazawa as its guardian deity.
Every winter, the legend has it, Tatsuko-hime is joined by Hachirō-Tarō, a human-turned-dragon from Lake Hachirō (Hachirōgata) in the western part of the prefecture. The warmth from the two dragons’ tryst keeps the lake from freezing.
Lake Tazawa the deepest lake in Japan, with a maximum depth of 423 meters. Its vast volume of water stores the warmth of the sunlight striking it, and as a result the water temperature never falls below the freezing point. That is the accepted scientific explanation, though it is hardly as charming as the legendary account.

???????? Tazawako, Japan 田沢湖 - Amazing Travel Vid! (HD)
Lake tazawa in Akita prefecture.
Lake Tazawa (田沢湖 Tazawa-ko?) is a caldera lake in Semboku, Akita Prefecture, northern Japan. It is the deepest lake in Japan (the maximum depth is 423.0 m). Because of its depth, it never freezes.
Formerly the lake was noted for having very clear water which could be compared to Lake Mashu in Hokkaidō. It was polluted due to the construction of a hydroelectric dam in 1940 and acid drainage from the Tamagawa Hot Spring (onsen). As a result, the indigenous fish kunimasu (Oncorhynchus nerka kawamurae) was thought to have gone extinct, however a living population was found in a different lake, Saiko Lake, in 2010 proving otherwise.
The former town of Tazawako was named after the lake. JR East maintains the Tazawako Line. While once the limited express Tazawa ran from Morioka to Akita, it was replaced by the Akita Shinkansen Komachi in 1997.
The area is a popular vacation area for Japanese tourists and several hot springs resorts can be found in the hills above the lake. Akita Prefecture's largest ski area, Tazawa Ski Area, overlooks the lake.

Lake Tazawa, Akita Prefecture: Sunrise at Japan’s Deepest Lake | Nippon.com: Japan in Video
Lake Tazawa (Tazawa-ko) in Senboku, Akita Prefecture, reaches a depth of 423 meters, making it the deepest lake in Japan. It is not certain how it was formed: Though it has been said to be a volcanic caldera, some think it is a crater formed by the impact of a meteorite.
On a clear day, the surface of Lake Tazawa reflects the sky with a brilliant cobalt blue. The lake is also strikingly beautiful at dawn. First the sky brightens in the east, and then the sun rises from behind the mountains, casting a rippled band of gold that stretches across the lake. The silhouette of a statue appears on the western shore—a bronze image of Tatsuko-hime, a beautiful young woman who according to legend was transformed into a dragon and became the guardian divinity of the lake. A Shintō shrine also stands on the shore, augmenting the mystical aura of the early morning scene.

Lake Tazawa (田沢湖 Tazawa-ko?) is a caldera lake in the city of Semboku, Akita Prefecture, northern Japan. It is the deepest lake in Japan at 423 metres (1,388 ft). The area is a popular vacation area and several hot spring resorts can be found in the hills above the lake. Akita Prefecture's largest ski area, Tazawa Ski Area, overlooks the lake.Lake Tazawa has a surface elevation of 249 meters, and its deepest point is 174.4 meters below sea level. Due to this depth, there is no possibility that the lake is frozen in the dead of winter. At 425 metres (1,394 ft), it is slightly deeper than Lake Shikotsu in Hokkaidō (423.4 meters), and is the 17th deepest lake in the world. Lake Tazawa has no natural inflow or outflow, and in 1931, had a measured transparency of 31 meters, comparable with Lake Mashu, but with abundant aquatic organisms. However, due to the construction of hydroelectric power plant facilities and agricultural runoff, coupled with an influx of highly acid water from Tamagawa Hot Spring, transparency has be reduced to less than 4 meters, and by the late 1940s the lake had become so acidic (pH 4.3) that it could no longer support irrigated agriculture. Starting in 1972, the Japanese government has been attempting to rectify the acidity problem through introduction of lime, with a new facility completed in 1991. However, in the year 2000, the lake still had an acidity of 5.14 at the 200 meter depth, and 4.91 at the 400 meter depth, indicating that full recovery has not yet been achieved.Due to its extreme depth, and almost circular profile, Lake Tazawa was considered to be either a caldera lake caused by volcanic activity or a crater lake caused by a meteorite impact. The depth of the lake was first measured as 397 meters, using a hemp rope, by Japanese geologist Tanaka Akamaro in 1909. The Akita Prefectural Fisheries Experiment Station survey indicated a depth of 413 meters in 1926 using a wire rope. During a three year survey from 1937-1940, geologist Yoshimura Nobuyoshi surveyed the lake bottom, finding the deepest point to be 425 metres (1,394 ft). The survey also found two small volcanic cones and sedimentation deposits to the depth of around one kilometer on the north-west side of the lake bottom. These findings lend credence to the theory that the lake is indeed of volcanic origin, from an explosive eruption of 1.4 million years ago.Prior to 1940, the main species of fish in Lake Tazawa included the indigenous kunimasu (Oncorhynchus nerka kawamurae), Sockeye salmon, dace[disambiguation needed], Japanese trout, char, carp, catfish and eel. However, after the acidic content of the lake changed in 1940, the only surviving fish is the dace, while most of the other species, including the kunimasu, are thought to have gone extinct.
