Lakshmi Narasimha Temple in Hampi, Karnataka
Constructed in 1528 under the aegis of King Krishnadevarya, the Laxminarasimha Temple is dedicated to Lord Narasimha, one of the nine avatars of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Laxmi. The Lord took the form of a human with the head of a lion in order to kill the demon king Hiranyakashyap at the behest of his devote Prahalad, the son of the demon king. The statue of Lord Narasimha was carved out of a single piece of granite and is the biggest statue in Hampi. The Lord is depicted sitting on the Sheshnaga or Adishesha, king of the snakes.
The Goddess Laxmi was seated on the lap of the Lord in the original form. However, her statue was disfigured and removed when the Deccan Sultans lay waste the Vijayanagara empire in 1565. The hand of the Goddess with rings on the fingers, which was resting on the Lord’s back, is all that remains of her presence. The name Laxminarasimha was given because of the presence of both the God and the Goddess in the temple.
The absence of the Goddess, led people to believe that the statue of Lord Narasimha was that of his Ugra Narasimha form (the angry phase of the avatar). However, the idol represents the Laxminarasimha or Malola – Narasimha avatar and not the Ugra Narasimha avatar. A magnificent statue, the ravages of time have taken its toll, but it still manages to retain its glory and magnificence for all to see.

Lakshmi Narasimha (Ugra Narasimha) Idol
We left Krishna temple complex at 4.10 PM and headed towards the popular Lakshmi Narasimha statue. This huge idol is easily noticeable from the main road itself. The iconic monolithic idol is the largest statue in Hampi. The idol is damaged majorly so much so that people often call it as Ugra Narasimha even though it is a representation of Lakshmi Narasimha.
The original idol had the image of Goddess Lakshmi sitting on the lap of Narasimha. But, the idol of Lakshmi had been completely demolished during the fall of Vijayanagara dynasty and thus making the impression of Ugra Narasimha. It is said that even now we can see the hand of Goddess Lakshmi idol resting on the back of Narasimha. But, you cannot see this because entry inside the enclosure is restricted.
Badavi Linga
Next to Lakshmi Narasimha idol, you can find the largest Shiva Linga of Hampi known as Badavi Linga. It is also housed in a small chamber with only one opening at the front. The Shiva Linga is very big and lower portion of the linga is always submerged in water. It is believed to be constructed by a poor woman hence the name Badavi Linga (Badavi means poor lady in Kannada). We left Badavi Linga at 4.30 PM and headed towards Royal Enclosure.
Queen’s Bath:
After visiting Badavi Linga idol, we headed towards Royal Enclosure. On the Royal Enclosure side of Hampi, the first attraction you will get to see is Queen’s bath.
This is the place where queen used to take bath. However, many theories decline this and suggest that it is a place used for recreational activities. Whatever be the case, it is a beautiful structure one cannot miss. It has an empty pond in the middle and a beautiful open pavilion with small windows. There are steps on one side through which one can get to the pond area. We spent time there till 5 PM and headed further towards the Royal Enclosure area.
Mahanavami Dibba:
The first structure you get to see in the Royal Enclosure is the huge Mahanavami Dibba. Mahanavami Dibba is a large stone platform built by Krishna Devaraya of Vijayanagara dynasty to celebrate his victory over Udayagiri. The structure is more beautiful than you see in the photos. When I Had a look at the photo of this place before visiting, I did not find it interesting at all, but the reality is quite different.
You need to climb about 25-30 big steps to reach the top. The side walls of the platform have a well-carved array of sculptures. At the top, there is nothing except a big plain stage. This is from where kings used to watch the march past of the army, cultural celebrations during Dusshera, sword fights, and other cultural activities. Now, if you go on top and have a look, you can find the ruins of the Royal Enclosure. Though it is sad to see the renowned town in such condition, never miss to sit there for some time and imagine the glorious past of the place. At the backside of the platform also, there are steps to climb. You can climb up from the front steps and climb down using the rear steps to cover the structure completely.
Stepped Tank:
From Mahanavami Dibba, we walked towards the stepped tank which is in the same enclosure. This stepped tank was excavated in the 1980s and is one of the beautiful water tanks. Well maintained by the ASI, the tank has steps in the formation of pyramids next to each other making it look elegant. The water of this tank was believed to be used for religious purposes. Next to this tank is the public tank. This is a bigger and normal looking tank. There is no water in the public tank currently. Apart from these, there is a king’s audience hall in this royal enclosure.

This is the largest statue in Hampi. Narasimha is sitting on the coil of a giant seven-headed snake called Sesha. The heads of the snake acts as the hood above his head. The god sits in a cross-legged Yoga position with a belt supporting the knees.
Sometimes this is referred as Ugra Narasimha (i.e. Narasimha in its terrifying form). The protruding eyes and the facial expression are the basis for this name.
Narasimha (means half-man’half-lion in local the languages) is on of the ten incarnations (avatar) of Lord Vishnu.
The original statue contained the image of goddess Lakshmi, consort of the god, sitting on his lap. But this statue has been damaged seriously during the raid leading to the fall of Vijayanagara. Even the damaged portion of such a large statue of Lakshmi carved on his lap is missing. Probably it may be laying around in tiny pieces. But the goddess’s hand is visible resting on his back in embracing posture. If you get a chance to go inside this enclosure, it is possible to see the hand of the goddess. Even the nails & the rings on her fingers are so perfectly executed.
Lion face of Lakshmi Narasimha also sometimes called as Unganarasimha (the ferocious Narasimha)
Somehow this single statue alone can demonstrate at the same time how creative and destructive the human mind can be.
You can reach this spot by the main road. The shrine is located at mid way of the main road that connects the Sacred Center to the Royal Center. About 200 meters south of the Krishna Temple (take the road that runs through the arch) you can spot a small canal crossing the road. An unpaved path at the right side (towards west) leads you to the Narasimha statue and the Badavilinga Temple next to it.

Sasivekalu & Kadalekalu Ganesha, Narsimha Statue - Hampi, KARNATAKA...Part (3)
On the slope of Hemakuta Hill is the Sasivekalu Ganesha about 2.4 metres tall and ironically named as Sasivekalu
or mustard seed. The God is seated in a large open mantapa with plain rough square pillars. The right hands hold the ankusa and broken tusk, while the upper left holds a looped pasa or noose. The lower left hand and the trunk are broken. This four handed god is a fine example of the Vijayanagara's artistic skills. This Ganesha is fashioned out of a single boulder in sitting position.
Near the Sasivekalu Ganesha is another monolith called, the Kadalekalu (gram seed) Ganesha. The huge seated
God, carved in the round out of a massive boulder, is about 4.5 metres high and is housed in a large shrine with a fine
open pillared mantapa in front. The tall slender granite pillars with many mythological themes carved decorated the front hall of this shrine which is singularly classical in its architectural proportions. The temple also forms one of the important vintage points from which a good and picturesque view could be had of the Hampi monuments. This image of Lakshmi-Narasimha, popularly called Ugranarasimha, meaning Narasimha of terrifying countenance,
is the largest icon in Hampi. This 6.7 m giant monolithic statue of Narasimha which is one of the ten incarnation of
lord Vishnu was cut in a single boulder, Originally, the icon bore a smaller image of Lakshmi sitting on his lap.

History of Lakshmi Narasimha Statue, Hampi
The Lakshmi Narasimha statue and the temple housing the statue were built in the year 1528 A.D. It was constructed during the rule of Krishnadevaraya, one of the greatest rulers of the Vijayanagara Empire. The temple is dedicated to Lord Narasimha, one of the ten avatars of Lord Vishnu, and Goddess Lakshmi. As such, the temple is known as the Lakshmi Narasimha Temple.
The original sculpture had a small figure of Goddess Lakshmi, consort of Narasimha, sitting on his lap. The gigantic statue was vandalized and mutilated in 1565 A.D. during the raid by the Mughals that led to the fall of the Vijayanagara Empire.
The limbs of Narasimha’s statue were broken during the attack. The figure of Lakshmi was separated from that of Narasimha. In the process of destruction, one of the hands of Goddess Lakshmi was broken and even today the broken hand of the Goddess can be seen resting on the back of Narasimha.
