Stavanger Cathedral (Norwegian: Stavanger domkirke) is Norway's oldest cathedral and the seat of the Bishop of Stavanger who leads the Diocese of Stavanger. It is located in the city of Stavanger in Rogaland county, Norway. The church is situated in the centre of the city, in the borough of Storhaug. The church is part of the Stavanger domkirke parish in the Stavanger arch-deanery in the Diocese of Stavanger.
History
Bishop Reinald, who may have come from Winchester, is said to have started construction of the Cathedral around 1100. It was finished around 1150, and the city of Stavanger counts 1125 as its year of foundation. The Cathedral was consecrated to Swithin as its patron saint. Saint Swithun was an early Bishop of Winchester and subsequently patron saint of Winchester Cathedral.
The church was initially the seat of the Ancient Diocese of Stavanger, a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church until the Protestant Reformation.
Stavanger was ravaged by fire in 1272, and the Cathedral suffered heavy damage. It was rebuilt under bishop Arne, and the Romanesque Cathedral was enlarged in the Gothic style.
In 1682, King Christian V decided to move Stavanger's episcopal seat to Kristiansand, based at the Kristiansand Cathedral. However, on Stavanger's 800th anniversary in 1925, King Haakon VII instated Jacob Christian Petersen as Stavanger's first bishop in nearly 250 years.
During a renovation in the 1860s, the Cathedral's exterior and interior were considerably altered. The stone walls were plastered, and the Cathedral lost much of its medieval looks. A major restoration led by Gerhard Fischer in 1939–1964 partly reversed those changes. The latest major restoration of the Cathedral was conducted in 1999. Andrew Lawrenceson Smith is famous for his works here.
At Nordjæren, a rich archaeological finds indicate that during the Iron Age there was a strong chief power. Stavanger had a natural harbor and was strategically located with Jæren in the south, Ryfylke in the east and with the ship's location along the coast in the west as well as the fertile Ryfylke islands in the north. No particular chief's seat seems to be of decisive importance for Stavanger's growth. But here the old big yards lay in a ring around what is today the center of Stavanger, both on land and on the islands nearby.
Nordjæren has probably been one of the most important starting points for Viking trips west to the British Isles. At Jæren, more and more varied Irish metalwork has been found than anywhere else in Europe. The finds in the Gauss Queen's tomb at Gausel show what wealth found here from the Viking Age. The grave is one of Norway's richest women graves from the Viking Age.
The cathedral and the city during the Middle Ages
Stavanger is one of Norway's oldest cities. The archaeological and historical sources of the former urban development are scarce, but in the mid-900s, during Håkon the Good, the people here ceased to bury their loved ones according to the Norse tradition. The oldest Christian tombs under the cathedral are probably from the 9th century, and a wooden church may have been erected in the same place where the cathedral stands today.
Hersen and the countryman Erling Skjalgsson ruled over the whole of western Norway from Lista to Møre. There is disagreement about whether he lived in Stavanger or Sola. After his death in 1028, a memorial cross was erected at Kungsgatan in Stavanger, the road that was then the main route to Stavanger.
The commencement of the construction of Stavanger's cathedral started in 1100, and the church was completed around 1150. Stavanger's diocese was established sometime in the 1120s. It has been assumed that the settlement at this time was concentrated between the two parallel streets Kirkegata and Skagen, but due to few archaeological excavations, little is known about how the settlement was during this time. In addition to the cathedral, Stavanger's royal estate, which during the 13th century was the residence of the city's bishop, Olav Monastery with the Olav Church, several other churches, including the Martin church and Kaniksgården, were the most important buildings in the city. A royal estate is mentioned in sources from the 13th century, but there are different opinions as to whether it was a royal estate or another building.

Stavanger Drone Flight: Stavanger is a city and municipality in Norway. It is the third largest city and metropolitan area in Norway (through conurbation with neighbouring Sandnes) and the administrative centre of Rogaland county. The municipality is the fourth most populous in Norway. Located on the Stavanger Peninsula in Southwest Norway, Stavanger counts its official founding year as 1125, the year the Stavanger Cathedral was completed. Stavangers core is to a large degree 18th- and 19th-century wooden houses that are protected and considered part of the citys cultural heritage. This has caused the town centre and inner city to retain a small-town character with an unusually high ratio of detached houses, and has contributed significantly to spreading the citys population growth to outlying parts of Greater Stavanger. The citys rapid population growth in the late 20th century was primarily a result of Norways booming offshore oil industry. Today the oil industry is a key industry in the Stavanger region and the city is widely referred to as the Oil Capital of Norway. The largest company in the Nordic region, Norwegian energy company Statoil is headquartered in Stavanger. Multiple educational institutions for higher education are located in Stavanger. The largest of these is the University of Stavanger. // Stavanger is a city in southwestern Norway. In the center of town, Stavanger Cathedral dates back to the citys 12th-century founding. Rogaland 2012: Stavanger cathedral
The first thing I wanted to do in Stavanger - which I'd never visited before - was to see their beautiful cathedral. It was built in the period 1100-1150 and is the oldest cathedral in the country that's still standing. It's been in continual use as a cathedral since the 14th century. It's also special because it still has an extremely medieval look, it hasn't been refurbished much at any point to fit the tastes of another period. (Or actually, this was done to some extent in the 1860s, but then done over again some decades later.) So it still looks really 12th century. :-)
An absolutely gorgeous building, I was so happy to finally get to see it with my own eyes. I made two videos about it, this is the first one. :-)

Edition 2019 | Volume 4 | Chapter 6
We continue our Norway adventures with our next port city of Stavanger, located at the mouth of the Gandsfjord in southwestern Norway. The history of Stavanger dates back to the Middle Ages. For hundreds of years, it was a tranquil coastal town. The economy of the city thrived from the late 1800s through World War II, thanks in part to its growing canning and fishing industries.
In 1969, the city was revitalized when oil was discovered offshore in the North Sea—bringing new wealth to the area. Today, Stavanger is a bustling sea port and a renowned leader in the oil-drilling industry.
Our port adventure for the day was the exhilarating rib boat sarfari on Lysefjord. It was a thrilling voyage into a glacial fjord with striking view of mountains, waterfalls and sea life.
After we warm up with some coffee and Norwegian waffle we explore Stavanger taking in the sights including Stavanger Domkirke (Cathedral) and Gamle Stavanger (Old Stavanger).
