The S.S. Stavronikita is a Greek freighter, which caught fire in the early part of the 1970s. After being adrift for over three days, she was finally rescued and brought to Barbados, where her blackened, burned out hull sat for a number of years before she was stripped and finally sunk in November, 1978. The 'stavro', as she is referred to by dive operators, sits perfectly upright in 127 feet at her stern, with her forward mast reaching to within 18 feet of the surface.
After almost 20 years of submersion, this wreck has been transformed into a hive of activity, her hull is adorned with sea wipts, soft and hard corals, sponges and gorgoncans, her masts and upper cabins are swarmed with Sargent Majors, Tangs, Blue Cromis and Red Hinds. Among others, Barracudas, Mackerels and Turtles are common visitors to the wreck. Max Depth 40 Meters

SS Stavronikita (the Stav) - Wreck Diving Barbados
In 1976, a 365ft Greek freighter was burnt severely off the coast of Barbados. It was towed back to Bridgetown, where it stayed for about 2 years.
In 1978, the Stav was bought over by the Government of Barbados and deliberately sunk just off Fitts Village, St. James for the sole purpose of creating an artificial reef. This artificial reef is now home to a great number of fish and coral alike. The Stavronikita rests in 120ft of water and is said to be one of the best wreck dives the island has to offer.

SS Stavronikita
The SS Stavronikita is the wreck of a 365ft Greek freighter which ran in to trouble off the coast of Barbados in 1976. The ship caught fire and was severely damaged. It was towed into the port of Bridgetown where she sat for almost two years.
In 1978 The Greek Government disowned her, so the Barbados government decided to deploy the ship as an artificial reef in the calm tranquil waters of the west coast, just off of Fitts Village in the Parish of St James. The shipwreck lies bolt upright with her bow facing East and the prop is at 40m/130ft. The top of the mast is at 6m/20ft. The house and main deck are to be found at 24m/80ft. The huge forward and aft cargo holds, and the cabins, stairways and engine rooms can be penetrated.

Diving on the Stavronikita shipwreck in Barbados
Our dive led by Puffer and Sparrow from Barbados Blue dive center took us from Carlisle Bay Marine Park up the west coast of Barbados to the 'Stav' sunk at a depth 120 feet the Stav is an ideal deep dive. As we descend the colours bleach until we are left with an almost monochromic view. Circling high above us was a single barracuda, then all of a sudden we are mobbed by a huge school of blue fish...
