Trains on Paekakariki Hill. Steam Incorporated & the Deco Delights Express.
Paekakariki Hill on New Zealand’s North Island drops to the ocean far below, creating a dramatic coastline of steep cliffs that must have seemed impossible to those early railway pioneers, not to mention the all too common seismic activity that can bring rocks crashing down. Even today this otherwise double track railway is single around the cliffs as it clings to a narrow ledge and threads its way through numerous tunnels built by those early railway men. The line is part of the NIMT (North Island Main Trunk) carrying commuters to and from Wellington in modern electric units as well as longer distance passenger trains to Palmerston North and Auckland. There are also heavy freight trains requiring up to three engines to tackle the steep climb from Paekakariki to Muri and beyond. Paekakariki is home to Steam Incorporated where volunteers lovingly restore Steam and Diesel locomotives along with authentic rolling stock to run special trains to many destinations around North Island, some of which lost their regular passenger trains many years ago. We join one of these specials to Palmerston North, from where it will continued Napier for a special Art Deco event. This video was filmed over five visits, three in glorious sunshine, one on an overcast day and one in torrential rain. I would like say a special thank you to Andrew Gorrie for introducing me to the “Paekakariki Escarpment Track” a footpath that runs high above the railway tracks, offering outstanding views of the railway and coastline, even in the pouring rain.

Steam Incorporated Depot Action (HD)
On Saturday 20th June 2015, Steam Incorporated had their Paekakariki based depot opened to the public. Today Steam Inc had planned to run the DOUBLE THUNDER excursion from Paekakariki to Woodville through the Manawatu gorge and return using steam locomotives Ja 1271 & Ab 608 Passchendaele. But unfortunately a weather bomb had hit and washed out a bridge up along the line. Nevertheless, the Steam Incorporated crew kept the dream going by running the two steam locos up and down the yard during the morning. In the afternoon, diesel locomotive Da 1429 on a visit from Auckland teamed up with Steam Inc's Da's 1410, 1431 & 1471 for a photo shoot outside the shed. Steam Incorporated hope to reschedule the DOUBLE THUNDER excursion sometime in July, enjoy!

Steam Incorporated - Centennial South Island Rail Tour 2015 (HD)
An 85 minute long video production that we presented at the annual Canterbury Railway Society meeting in February 2017 - enjoy! One of New Zealand's recent major events in the heritage rail movement in modern times was the undertaking of a steam hauled tour train around the South Island railway network undertaken by mainline heritage operator Steam Incorporated, based in Kapiti, Wellington during October - November 2015. The purpose was to celebrate the centennial of the country's war memorial steam locomotive Ab class no. 608 since being built at Christchurch's Addington Workshops in 1915. The locomotive has been named Passchendaele in remembrance to those railway workers who lost their lives during the dark times of World War One, 100 years ago. The locomotive hauled a consist of 4 wooden open platform carriages, a steel paneled buffet car and a wooden guards van which is on a long term loan from the Glenbrook Vintage Railway in Auckland, all from the similar time period when the locomotive was in operation with the NZR. We capture exclusive footage of this special rail tour as it travels right across the railway network of the South Island, travelling to many places such as Picton, Christchurch, Dunedin, Taieri Gorge, Greymouth, Hokitika & Westport, plus a visit to the Weka Pass Railway in North Canterbury, including never-seen before footage of the excursion. A rail tour of this size in today's ongoing change of environment is unfortunately not likely to be repeated in the future, due to current issues that all New Zealand mainline heritage operators are facing at the moment. Nevertheless enjoy the magical experience of steam on the mainline for a period of 3 weeks, bringing back the memories when steam ruled the railways of New Zealand during the 20th century!
