Come and Experience the Flavour of Queenstown
Queenstown offers a range of sophisticated and vibrant restaurants and bars situated amongst some of the world’s most breath-taking scenery. Being the gateway to the Central Otago wine region also means award-winning Pinot Noir is on-hand close by waiting to be sampled.
TSS Earnslaw Vintage Steamship on Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown NZ
The TSS Earnslaw is an integral part of Queenstown and New Zealand's pioneering history and is the only coal-fired steamship in operation in the southern hemisphere.
She was commissioned by New Zealand Railways to service the communities around Lake Wakatipu. Launched in the same year as the Titanic, the TSS Earnslaw’s maiden voyage was on 18 October 1912.
At 48 metres long, she was the biggest boat on the lake and provided an essential link between the isolated farming communities carrying passengers, sheep, cattle, mail and supplies.
She was rescued from being scrapped in 1968 and painstakingly restored to her original condition – everything you see is pretty much like it was a 100 years ago.
The TSS Earnslaw has featured in several movies including a cameo in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull as an Amazon River Boat.
Famous composer Ron Goodwin composed a piece of music inspired by the rhythm of the TSS Earnslaw’s engines, which you can see and hear in this video.
