Railroads of Australia: Peterborough Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre
The railway museum of Peterborough is a small, but very interesting place for railway fans. To take some pictures of the museum was not so easy, because the access is only about half an hour with a fast volonteer guide. So I have mixed stills & movies to this little documentaion of the museum.
The story of Peterborough: Once South Australia’s busiest regional railway hub employing more than 1,000 people who looked after more than 100 passing trains every day, the old depot and workshop is now home to Australia’s fascinating Heritage Railway museum.
Movies taken with my LUMIX TZ 81, stills with a EOS 550D.
Peterborough's Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre
Visitors to Peterborough have a treat in store at the Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre -- a Museum with an absolute difference.
Peterborough was founded on the rail but times have moved on and now the Indian Pacific runs through the town but only stops on request.
However, the history of the town during a guided tour of the Museum or after dark at South Australia's first and only Sound and Light Show.
This magic light and sound spectacle tells the story of Steamtown, railways and the creation of Peterborough -- right thought to General McArthur's 1942 claim that he 'would return' while standing on the duckboard of a train about to pull out of Terowie -- and all while visitors are seated in an historic Transcontinental rail carriage.

Wander through magnificently restored carriages filled with ornate polished wood and beautifully decorated dining cars. These trains are exhibited in original settings so you can fully appreciate the history surrounding these marvellous pieces of engineering brilliance. Steamtown also features plenty of fascinating railway memorabilia and a new theatrette where you can watch changing exhibitions and visual displays.

HOT DEALS - FLINDERS EXPERIENCES - STEAMTOWN HERITAGE RAIL CENTRE
Once South Australia's busiest regional railway hub employing more than 1,000 people who looked after more than 100 passing trains every day, the old depot and workshop is now home to Australia's most unique and fascinating Heritage Railway museum.
You'll find Australia's only operational triple gauge turntable, a wide range of historic rolling stock including elegant steam trains, powerful diesel locomotives, unique passenger trains and freight trains, all exhibited in original settings in the heritage listed roundhouse and original work sheds.
After dark, Steamtown hosts South Australia's only Sound and Light Show, a fabulous sound and visual spectacular about railway history in Australia and Peterborough. Guests sit comfortably in a historic railway carriage, once a first class sleeper on the East West route between Sydney and Perth, and are transported visually through a 1.5 hour sound and light show that you will thoroughly enjoy. Bookings essential.
DAY TOUR
Personally guided tours take place daily between 9.00am and 5.00pm, the last tours starting at 3:30 pm. Group bookings should be arranged ahead of time. The tour takes approximately 1.5 hours and gives you an amazing insight into historic locomotives, carriages and other interesting freight vehicles.
You'll be transported back to the glamorous 1920's when train travel was the most elegant way to get around - passengers settling themselves into a First Class Lounge car, sipping a long, cool drink while entertained by the on board pianist. As you sink into the warmth of the red leather armchairs, you'll understand why First Class train travel is still highly regarded as a superior way to travel.
Then you could sit in the cabin of one of the powerhouse steam locomotives, where men would shovel coal and sweat in the intense heat to keep the fires burning and the wheels turning.
Somewhere further along, you'll visit the baby health car, a child health centre on train tracks that visited rural South Australia to help mothers and children in remote farms and settlements.
Trains and railways are part of Australia's rich heritage and your day tour will help you relive the full heritage rail experience.
NIGHT TOUR
When the sun goes down over Peterborough, the Sound and Light Show gets going at the Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre!
You will sit comfortably in a restored 1916 historic rail carriage which is placed on an 85 food long, 3 gauge turntable. This awesome sound and light experience will have you becoming part of the last two centuries and will appeal to everyone in the family. Pre-bookings essential and starting times depend upon time of year.
Food can be provided on request at a small additional cost for groups.
DESTINATIONS readers booking a Guided Day Tour and the Sound and Light Show receive a 10% discount.

This video clip was taken on 03/04/1988 at the Steam Town roundhouse, Peterborough, South Australia. It shows ex-WAGR (West Australia Government Railways) narrow gauge, steam locomotive, PMR 720 Keith Smith being prepared to haul a tourist passenger train from Peterborough to Eurelia and return. NOTE: the legacy triple gauge capacity of the turntable (narrow, standard and broad-gauge).

Steamtown Peterborough 1997
Ex WAGR Steam Loco W901 and Ex Commonwealth Railways Diesel Shunter NC1 double head a Steamtown tourist train in 1997. As per usual, a fire patrol, hauled by N99, followed the train. While the train was in Peterborough Station Yard, RM86 Toby bustled about the yard, on one of the rare occasions that he was out the shed.
The locos and rollingstock, including Toby and N99 are now displayed at the Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre in Peterborough. For more information, visit steamtown.com.au

SteamTown Peterborough Part 1/3
When SteamTown Peterborough SA was running.
It is what I now believe a static museum. This is a pity as this is what this town would benefit from hugely that is, tourism. This footage has been edited down from about an hour. I have reduced the quality considerably to get it onto youtube. I know the town I was born there
