Steens Mountain Wilderness
The United States Congress designated the Steens Mountain Wilderness in 2000 and it now has over a total of 170,166 acres. All of this wilderness is located in Oregon and is managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Steens Mountain is located in Oregon's high desert is one of the crown jewels of the state's wildlands. It is some of the wildest and most remote land left in Oregon.
The Bureau of Land Management's National Conservation Lands, also known as the National Landscape Conservation System, contain some of the West's most spectacular landscapes. It includes over 886 federally recognized areas and approximately 27 million acres that include Wilderness areas.
With the passage of the Omnibus Public Land Act in March 2009, the BLM now manages eight Wilderness Areas across nearly 247,000 acres in Oregon. The BLM also manages one Wilderness Area in Washington covering 7,142 acres. In addition, the BLM currently protects wilderness values on 82 Wilderness Study Areas (WSA) and five Instant Study Areas in Oregon totaling more than 2.6 million acres and one WSA in Washington totaling 5,557 acres.
Wilderness is Congressionally-designated piece land that is managed in accordance with the Wilderness Act of 1964 to ...secure for the American people of present and future generations the benefits of an enduring resource of wilderness. Wilderness areas are places where natural processes take precedent; areas managed so that nature remains substantially unchanged by human use. Rugged trails provide the only access into wilderness, and travel is restricted to foot or horseback.
This map will allow you to plan your trip, navigate the wilderness, and enjoy its solitude and splendor. Before you head out to this area be sure you know how to use a map and compass.

Steens Mountains & the Alvord Desert | Exploring the West Ep. 2
I had a few weeks off from work so I decided to load up my 2002 BMW R1150GS motorcycle and hit the road. No particular destination in mind, just exploring.
In this episode I start by leaving Camp Hart Mountain and head for Frenchglen, Oregon. From there, I travel the Steens Mountain Loop, and end up in the Alvord Desert, where I captured some epic footage with my Phantom 4.

Steens Mountain Backcountry Byway
Our Trip on the Steens Mountain Backcountry Byway. We started our trip on the Scenic Byway from the Southern Entrance of the loop as suggested by the campground owners. They said that we were more likely to see the wild horses from this direction.
We did see and film the wild horses shortly after entering the Byway.
The 52-mile Byway gradually climbs the mountain and offers a spectacular never-ending change of scenery along the way.

Frenchglen: The Edge of Oregon
There are very few places that grab you like Frenchglen, Oregon. Located in the Southeastern corner of the state, not only is the Steens Mountain an amazing site to see, the people who live there have a story to tell and in 2006 we tried to help them.
Car Tent Camping - Steens Mountains
As we continue our journey of exploring Southeastern Oregon from the Alvord Desert, we make our way up to the Steens Mountains (about a 3 hour drive).
We thought we were going to be able to find a campsite near a summit hiking trail, but we could not.
That resulted in a 4 hour drive around the mountains looking for a suitable spot.
GPS coordinates have been included in the video of some scenic spots, including an amazing hiking trail (short but sweet).
For Father’s Day weekend, we headed to south east Oregon to car tent camp in the middle of Alvord desert and Steens Mountains.
This is part 2 of a 2 part series of our exploration weekend in southeast Oregon.
I hope you will join us in this adventure, and continue to stay with us in future adventures to come!
As always, thanks for watching and I’ll see you next time!
Stay safe and take care.

Oregon Outback III - Steens Mountain
The third trip out to the great Oregon Outback starts with a landing on Steens Mountain (outside of wilderness area) and ends out over the Alvord Desert. Pulled the plane off the road and did a bit of an exploratory bike ride into the campground area and beyond. Only one vehicle was out there camping that Saturday - just shows how desolate and underutilized the area is. The scenery is fantastic out here but unfortunately I only had the remains of the day to work with.

Explore Oregon Recreation: Steens Mountain
The Steens Mountain Cooperative Management and Protection Area (CMPA) is approximately 500,000 acres of private and public land offering diverse scenic and recreation experiences. The CMPA encompasses deep glacier-carved gorges, stunning scenery, wilderness, wild and scenic rivers, and a way of life for all who live there. The 52-mile Steens Mountain Backcountry Byway provides access to four campgrounds, numerous trails, the Riddle Brothers Ranch National Historic District, wild horse roaming areas, and opportunities for fishing and hunting. The views from Kiger Gorge, East Rim, Big Indian Gorge, Wildhorse, and Little Blitzen Gorge overlooks are not to miss!
Know Before You Go: There are long distances between services and amenities, such as fuel, drinking water, restrooms and cell phone reception.
Most roads in the area are rough and primitive -high clearance or 4x4 vehicles along with high quality tires are recommended.
The remote nature and vast landscape of the area may leave even the most experienced traveler confused or lost. Traveling with a current map of the area is essential.
The Steens Mountain CMPA is a mixture of public and private lands and specially designated areas where particular regulations may apply. Obey road closure signs and stay on designated open routes (which are those shown on current BLM maps) -driving off road is prohibited. Respect land owners and always get permission to go onto private property.
From Bums, take State Highway 78 southeast for approximately 2 miles. Tum right onto State Highway 205 and travel south for 60 miles to Frenchglen. Just past Frenchglen, tum left onto the Steens Mountain Loop Road.

Malheur and Harney Lakes - southeastern Oregon
Malheur and Harney Lakes are large, shallow lakes into which several rivers empty. There is no outlet to the ocean in this part of Oregon. This video was made on 09-11-2012, during more peaceful times for the Refuge, but on the day of Benghazi.
